Reversing Camera Retrofit

Featured Replies

Thank you all, mine is now fitted.

About 3 hours, less if you subtract the time spent staring at it and swearing!

Things I have learned:

On an estate you do have to take lower door trim off, but not necessarily the upper one;

Some of that plastic coated spring which is designed to hold net curtains is fantastic for feeding through the wire;

Go shopping before you start, not halfway through.

My first post here, and english is not my native. I have finally managed to install the Sinosmart reversing camera on my Octavia mk3 MY2015 (nickname: brownie). The hardest part was the cabl

A straightened out coathanger with a small eye formed on the end is my tool of choice.

I have had the same one curved into a loop carried in my toolbox since I was installing burglar alarms in 1992, the same one in a Triggers Broom type of way!

At the other end of the spectrum I have a 4m telescopic carbon fibre fishing pole with a coathanger eye on both ends for use above ceiling voids & suspended ceilings, same vintage, doesn't get used much but the coathanger is regularly used.

Fitted mine a few weeks ago and met a guy who did the coding this week.

As Sasha recommended, this product works great (thanks!)

watch for the right dimensions AND fitting elements though. The first camera I ordered fit by dimensions but didn't have clamps, but screws for installation.

Fitting this was quite easy, the hardest part was routing it through the trunk door and fitting the adapter harness.

I decided to use the bolster on top of the car to fit the wire. The bolster just came loose with fingers, so I could stick the wire under it.

Quite happy with it!

Hi all! I'll give a small bump to the topic.

I've fitted this RVC yesterday. The package includes all the necessary wiring as you can see in a photo. Everything seems to be an original part.

I put the loom through the passenger side (LHD) along with the original wiring, what means you should remove:

- boot lid lower panel

- D-column trim

- cover for boot lock carrier (doorsill?)

- right side boot trim

- rear passengers' seats (just the seating part, not the seatback)

- right side rear passenger seat trim/airbag

- right side front passenger lower trim

- glove box

I put + to the red-yellow cable in quadlock connector and - at the grounding point under the right side boot trim. Everything went well, no complications, besides the incorrect canbus connection. I followed the guide from vwmodul.de, but I didn't notice that the wires are in incorrect pins, so I had two differently coloured wires (orange-brown, oprange-violet) opposite each other in the final connection. So, I just pulled them out of the connector, changed the pin positions so that same colour connect together and problem solved. It doesn't need to be calibrated, just coded in gateway, park assist and infotainment unit.

Camera works well, but in my opinion it has slightly worse image than the old cam. However, I like the benefit of various regimes, dynamic lines and that it doesn't shut off immediately after switching from R to D. It also has a washer, but I hadn't the parts to connect it, so for the next time. If anybody is considering the retrofit, I can recommend.

What was the cost of this RVC?

Sorry for that post.. I didn't mention the URL

I should have asked here instead of in the thread for weyland's great guide, but on an estate is it easier to route along the roof liner or bottom trim?

Having done both I would fish it through the roof liner every time now.

I have had the A, B and C pillar trims off two Octavias and a Yeti several times and it holds no fear for me, people freak out a bit regarding the curtain airbags but they have no reason to.

Even if I were still happy to grovel around on my knees & were able to focus in the gloom the cable threading is so much easier at high level.

Cheers J.R. I've already ordered a cable threading kit to make things a bit easier, but is it easy enough to pop off and back on again the pillar trim, or can you get away without it?

Well, I've never seen what could the cable do to the curtain airbag in case of its activation, but I also don't want to know for sure. However, it depends if you would like to do it more like original or not and if you prefer 100% safe solution or you would take the risk. It's up to you.

Safer solution would be along the floor? TBH I never even considered any potential safety issue.

I think so, since there isn't any airbag. I'd think of it in "what if" way.

There is no risk, anyone with an ounce of common sense would see where to run the cable so as not to impede the airbag were it to deploy in an collision or rollover.

Oh if only everyone had common sense :D

It's pretty easy to avoid the airbags on the A-pillars as everything is obvious once the cover is removed.

Never had to deal with curtain airbags but I imagine that's harder to do properly unless you drop the headlining to see what's going on...

On my MK3 I used the bottom route as it followed the bulk of the existing wires. I used both routes on my MK2 depending what I was fitting.

My mistake, I thought the curtain airbags were the ones in the A or B pillars.

My Yeti has an SRS logo on the B pillar trim, I'm sure when I removed them to replace the seatbelt pyrotechnics that the airbag was behind it and not above the roof lining. Certainly when I pushed the fishrod (a straightened coathanger that has been in my toolbox since 1992 when I started my alarm company!) through there was no obstruction there.

I think the ignitor for a curtain airbag is around the B-pillar but it extends over both windows and down the A-pillar :)

Much like this example image for a Golf:

image.png.2c17196617bf6322df01ab3aca26a2f1.png

My A pillars definitely had individual airbags.

The previous MK2 Octavia had airbags in the upper outer side of the seat bolsters, I think the Yeti has one in the B pillar but it could be over the roof, there are no signs of the headlining having rupture points to allow the deployment, on the moulded dashboard its invisible, it would also be in the fibreboard roof moulding but for the fabric covering.

There's a photo here of the airbag in the A pillar in a Yeti..

A pillar Air Bag.jpg

And in the YouTube video you can see where they are in the facelifted Octavia at 25 seconds.

In the graphic langers2k posted, are airbags at the rear seat side, labelled number 10 standard? I don't recall seeing anything indicating they may be there in mine, I guess they're optional.

They're optional.

I think there are a few spec levels when it comes to airbags, crew protection possibly?

The details aren't super important as each car model/spec could be slightly different. My general point was that some cars will have curtain airbags along the top edge so if you're running wires along the top, please check and route them appropriately which may not be easy without dropping the roof lining :)

For Yeti specific stuff, here's a random picture of a (sad looking) Yeti with the curtain airbag in place. I'm pretty sure the left of the image is the rear based on the seat belt point so if the airbag was unfolded, it feels long enough to get to the A-pillar:

s-l1600.jpg (1600×1200)

And a picture showing where they deploy which again suggests the curtain extends down the A-pillar:

That's probably enough off-topic rambling from me :D

Fascinating and thanks for that

As I have the airbags in the A pillar like the photo, and I think that there was one in the B pillar (it certainly has the logo) then I conclude that mine does not have the curtain airbag system.

That undeployed airbag in the roof looks scarey, it makes me think of the inflatable auto-pilot in the Airplane movie :D

I am on intimate terms with the steering wheel, passenger dashboard and drivers knee airbags having replaced them all, the latter one I had in and out twice during the weekend to remove the clutch pedal and cylinder.

There aren't separate airbags in each pillar. It's just the label to let you know about it. It's one airbag from A pillar to C pillar. Maybe I'll find a picture of it in promo materials.

I bought this camera https://a.aliexpress.com/_mK0e8I9

hoping to install it without any problems..but the camera does not show me the image on the screen.. Later I see that my multimedia unit 5E0 035 819 A does not support the camera..what luck I am...Is there any way for my camera to work or do I have to change the multimedia unit?

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to slightly update my retrofit. For those, whose cars are of earlier MYs (MY15 in my case, manufactured 11/14).

I couldn't get the camera working in case the parking sensors activated automatically when getting closer to the objects in front of the car. When selected reverse, I got just the OPS view, not the picture from camera. It turned out that my gateway needed newer software to communicate with the camera as well as with the parking sensors module. So, the gateway has been flashed from index AC to AM, camera has been calibrated using special "domino" board.

Now it works as it should. Picture from the camera is available immediately after switching the sensors on with the button, even if standing still and it doesn't matter which gear is selected and after automatic activation and selection of reverse, too. Completed.
