It's implying that those outside the two in the middle (Bono of U2 and Bob Geldof of The Boomtown Rats) made the better music but it's subjective as I like U2 but can't stand The Sex Pistols.

Reminds me of the old story about Bono.

 

In one of his many inter-song talky bits he stands clicking his fingers to the beat being tapped out by the drummer.

 

"Every time I click my fingers a child dies in Africa"....

 

Crowd member shouts back:

"Well stop feckin doing it then!"
