BBZ Fabia Judder/hesitation when warming up

Well, with the previous 4.5 bar it also ran "right", I've seen these engines only get picky (throw "rich condition" codes) after 6 bar regulators (!) so if a 3 bar regulator is what came with the car, so be it.

That's the beauty of wideband lambda, the ECU will simply alter injection duration until it has the mixture right which is why fuel pressure is not critical and therefore why adjustable regulators don't have any effect.

The EGR circuit is an integral part of the engine management system, it actively reduces pumping losses and makes the engine more fuel efficient as well as decreasing emissions.

  • Yes that's it. Unless the readiness code is compliant the engine, however it may appear isn't running 100% as intended, I guess in a fully closed loop,

PM received.

I've done about 6 short journeys now with disconnected EGR and still no fault lights.  Two codes though when scanned just now, unsurprisingly.  Place your bets on how long 'til I see a fault light...

Will flag after a number of drive cycles (can't remember how many off the top of my head). The readiness code will flag a non conformity and that will upset a few things.

Thanks Tech1e. I'm up to about 10 short journeys now, I think, longest at about 10 miles, still nothing to see. I'll try to keep counting to see if it's a round number of cycles. Still seems to drive exactly the same, but I guess various fuel trims etc. are adjusting themselves to the new situation? Is that the sort of thing you mean by

Excellent, thank you all. Definitely will service the EGR.

I love experiments...

About 16 journeys into my current one, and it occurred to me at lunchtime to wonder if I'd ever seen the emissions warning light on the Polo, and to look for it at ignition on.

I think you may be able to guess the result?

May explain why I didn't get a fault light when I had a dead rear lambda sensor; and why I don't have one now.

Gonna just check that it comes on at ignition on on a workmate's Fabia with same engine, then maybe rip out my cluster and see what sort of fkery has been perpetrated on it by a previous owner! :D

Have you got a fault light by now @juanse_2691?

Thanks to this thread I've found a fault with my car that I didn't know I had.

Love how your experiment has unearthed this bodgery. Wonder how long it would have been before you found out about the light if you'd never done it.

Luckily, I have scanned the car reasonably regularly since purchase. Should have failed all 4 mots I've put it through, I think; shouldn't the tester be looking for absent warning lights at ignition on?

Certainly would have thought so.

The DVSA changed the ruling on the EML in the latest revision, it's now 2003> for petrol & 2008 > for diesels

It's an MY2004 car built on 05/06/2003.

I think the main warning light they look for is the airbag, unless they're having a bad day or there is a DVSA official looking over their shoulder

To answer all your questions:

1 Been 200 miles and back. Not a single problem, hiccup or light, whatsoever.

2. When it comes to emissions, there are two different equipments: EU4 and EU2 ones. I know for certain that my car is an EU2 and I can't remember whether or not it comes with an emissions light, maybe I misread the manual but I remember reading EU2 cars come without it. Never seen it light up as well. EPC lights up as normal with ignition on and promptly disappears at start.

I knew I couldn't have made this stuff up! Went to check the manual and there is no mention of it (the emissions light) being absent. It was driving me crazy as I thought I'd need to get the cluster out...

Luckily I found it. It is in the workshop manual:

Small update:

The car sat unused while I was recovering from surgery, 2 months to be exact. Only thing to service after that was the windshield washer pump, two taps with a wrench and it worked. That's it.

As promised, serviced the EGR and the throttle body, battery disconnected while I was there. Also took all small fuses out (the mini blade ones) and cleaned them. As soon as I went to start the car the airbag light came up and stayed on. Also the car died two times. Anyway I started it, drove it to the shop, had it scanned for faults, codes cleared, did a throttle body adaptation, had all actuators tested and steering re-coded for lighter operation (since I'm recovering from hand surgery). All tests were successful, VCDS scan reports no errors. The car behaves much nicer now, BUT, the small hesitation is still present. I blame it on the 4-bar FPR but my mechanic doubts it, in fact he thinks it should run much better with the 4-bar instead of the 3-bar. The 3-bar FPR filter is also pretty much unobtainable where I live, so I guess I'll have to live with the 4-bar for a while. Other than that, the quest continues. Vacuum leak plausible? It has to be a very little one. Flexi pipe at brake servo is intact, supple to the touch, no cracks whatsoever. 🤷‍♂️

"The quest continues" etc.

Did you adapt the EGR?

would be interesting to see if it would generate a readiness code with VCDS.

Yes sir I did. Anyway I have a major service coming in the next few months (clutch seems to bite a bit late) so I'll have everything looked over, retightened etc again when I'm there.

Is the intake end of the EGR pipe different between AUB and BBZ engines? The AUB seems to have a little "cap" with two exits just under the throttle valve, mine does not, it's just an open end. I don't know if it makes any difference. I know for certain that the EGR valve was replaced by a PO while the car was still in warranty.

Yeah they got rid of the cap because they used to block up. Think I wrote a guide on it somewhere on here.

Yes, I used the Taylor93's guide for EGR cleaning for AUB engines and you're mentioned in it. Thank you very much, I thought the cap was missing.

If I posted a 3-bar filter/regulator to you, is there much chance of it arriving?

Hello @Wino, thank you very much for chiming in, yes, I guess so.

I'll investigate what postage would cost. If it isn't crazy money I'd be happy to.

Thank you very much in advance. Money transfer through Western Union is possible if the need arises.

And just like that, I received the parcel today. Thanks @Wino, I'll let you know how it goes.
