Sat Nav Maps Update

Mine does.

Did you re-format your SD card or just delete stuff? I always reformat the card and it has always upgraded perfectly. Another possibility is that the de-compress had an error, might be worth re-running.

I have tried reformating (fat32) and extracting the map files again with the same outcome. No UK village names. French village names are fine. Skoda customer services are clueless but have asked me to visit Skoda dealer to solve the problem.

Slightly offtopic, but can we get a software update to latest infotainment used in 2021 Superb, Octavia IV?

If yes, will it be possible to update software by yourself or only by an authorized dealer?

The Skoda dealer checked my SD card in another car and looked at the map in one of their cars. They confirmed that the latest version of the UK map (ECE 1 2020-21) does not provide village place names. I was both relieved and annoyed to have this confirmation; relieved because the fault was not due to any error on my part or in downloading and unzipping the files; annoyed because Skoda UK, to whom I have reported this fault, did not take the trouble to have a look for themselves. The fault is also present on VW cars, because I tried downloading from their portal just in case. I do not understand why no other customers are complaining.

Hi, mines just the same.  Bit rubbish isn't it!  Latest maps from VW website.

Paul

I have now gone back to the previous version. VW/Skoda and their map supplier Garmin should be explaining what has gone wrong. So far my complaint to Skoda has resulted in a statement that soon customers will be able to add information to maps using a New map creator tool. Laughable incompetence and lack of commitment from top UK manager to whom I have written.

Let us all know what they say 🙂  I thought the map data was supplied by "Here we go" (or whatever they're called).

Who knows? I believe Here may well involved in producing the maps but Skoda Customer Services told me they (and VW) have a contract with Garmin to supply the maps and updates for built-in satnavs. According to Wikipedia, Here is owned by a consortium of German car manufacturers Audi, BMW and Daimler.

Who knows indeed 🙂  Whoever does it screwed up this time around!

Thanks for explanation of download/SDcard process. I have made the error of not formatting the SDHC card to Fat32 standard, so Nav unit could not read it! Trying again, correctly this time I hope. My Kodiak is an 2018 delivery. This is the first update I have tried. I noticed that the speed limits symbols were very erratic showing incorrect data on known routes. Hope the update cures the problem.

If you mean can you update a MIB2 system to the latest MIB3, I think that is very unlikely to be just a matter of updating the software.

I have more or less given up on the satnav in the Karoq ........

When we bought the car, the dealer told us that I could download the latest maps myself - but, if I had any trouble they could do it for me ....... "just drop it off with us for a couple of days". After looking into this, It certainly didn't appear to be as easy as I was led to believe - and I didn't want to risk losing everything by reformatting the wrong bit at the wrong time. I let the dealer do the update when the car went in for its annual service - and that is what I will continue to do. [they have a young chap called 'Brains' who seems au fait with this stuff]

However, we decided to purchase the latest 6" screen Tomtom and an additional screen mount for my wife's B-max which has an unbelievably useless built-in satnav. We now swap the new satnav between cars as required. This new Tomtom has the advantage of receiving updates over wifi and new map updates every three months. It also means that the infotainment screen can be kept free for other distractions.

As an aside, a couple of friends who had been extolling the joys of using their mobile phones for navigation, have now returned to using 'stand-alone' satnavs.

Dragging up an old topic here but I have just updated the car's sat nav 2019 Amundsen using the laborious method of overwriting each folder on the original SD card as there is not enough room to do a full direct extract all update to it (not enough space on the card), so I have to do it by copy and paste of each folder. This works and when inserted in slot 1 the car recognises the update and we are good to go.

As a back-up I took an identical 32Gb, but alien Scandisk card and loaded the same files to it direct after formatting per the Skoda site instructions. Replaced the Skoda card in the car and this card is not recognised.

How do I use a non-Skoda card to make use of larger map files as I journey across Europe and afar. My problem is when the original card fails as these SD cards are prone to do. How do I work around the 'hidden micro-chip' Skoda says is installed on the factory card.

You buy a genuine card from the likes of https://www.satnavishop.co.uk/skoda-37-c.asp

BTW its not a hidden chip, they (Skoda/VAG) program the CID details onto genuine cards ( see here https://www.getflashmemory.info/read-psn-from-sd-media/ for explanation of CID )

It used to be possible to write the CID information with some cards and writers

I already have a genuine Skoda card, so do not need to buy another one, but what happens if this card fails as they are prone to do.

You buy a replacement as I said above
