Just asking for advice on towbars for sportline estate...

I have purchased the proper wiring loom from skoda dealer and I just want to pick a good easy to use detachable towbar now...

The skoda dealer has that Czech made Prof svar one but I'm wondering do I go westfalia witter bosal.

What's your advice or experience

I've got a towbar I'm looking to sell if anyone's interested? It's the one that came on the car, but was in the boot when I purchased the car.

I've read they can be expensive so if anyone wants it, make me an offer

Personally I would go hard or go home and get the proper Skoda Oris foldable bar as you’ll need the ACC recalibrated after fitting any towbar anyway and the foldable one is extra handy :)

Curious to know why the ACC needs recalibrating.  I'm considering a towbar for my next car.

I have a 190 brake sportline estate 2018. I have purchased the wiring loom for it from skoda as it was not prepared for towbar before purchase... I have attached what I have bought... So what else do I need and is the oris the best to go with. I think I just want a detectable Swan neck?

Waiting on collecting a 2017 sportline superb, would be interested in buying one of the bars mentioned here...

From my research, appears some of them aren’t suitable for the sportline though... 🤔

I had a TowTrust detachable towbar fitted by a local company on my Sportline estate and pretty impressed it with, One note of caution the company used a proper installation kit but also as part of the job the car had some coding done which I would say is very important, when a trailer or caravan is hitched the coding disables the rear sensors and fog light, activates an additional dash light for the caravan indicators, shows a graphic on the infotainment screen of the car hitched up, alters the stability control if you've got it and I've also been told the way the DSG holds on to gears. This might be worth looking in to if you doing it yourself. I'd also be wary about fitting a wiring loom yourself as most modern cars have a 5volt canbuss system running around them and I'm not sure if you have to wire in to that too.

Had a TowTrust fitted to my Sportline Estate no problems, around £600 for the full fitting and wiring kit and relevant coding.

The only thing I did encounter when buying my Sportline was I was originally looking at a 2.0tdi 190 DSG 4x4 from a dealer and enquired about them fitting a towbar, when they went to get me a price the computer said no and it was a production fit only, any other model, engine, gearbox and drive train yes but that one no, basically had to have it fitted on the production line as the that particular engine, gearbox and drive train configuration, regardless of the model, it would need extra cooling and other upgrades. The dealer was shocked as he'd never come across it before but his head tech guy confirmed it was right.

Funnily enough the specialist who fitted my towbar said they could do it as their computers and the like of Witter who they even rang up for advice said it was OK but they did say they had heard of this before with other manufacturers too.

In the end I went for a 2wd 190 DSG for the piece of mind after what Skoda had said.

Cheers, sorry my post maybe was misleading, I took the ones as not being suitable possibly because of the changes to bumper over a standard model? I do recall having a few minor issues fitting the bar to our old Octavia VRS. I.e. bumper cut/clearances.

I’m looking for a detachable one this time, so assuming access point of ball may be effected by the sportline bumper… 🤔

Last one I fitted was to our golf vii, this came with a bypass kit, I.e. wire into rear lights (canbus, only 3 wires if I recall correctly.) , assume this can be done again,  but I do plan to put the proper loom in this time and have coded. Mainly for the rear sensors…. 👍

main use is bike carrier on my car, with a couple of dozen local trailer runs in the year.  No long distance journeys/caravan, but never know…. 😉

I assume it'll be uneconomical to get it removed from your car and then fitted to anyone elses or are you just looking to sell the neck?

I didn't fit the towbar myself, it is detachable and the place that fitted it didn't say anything about the rear bumper causing problems, like most VAG cars the towbar replaces the bumper iron.

I was surprised at the size of the hole they cut under the bumper but it can't be seen, the hitch fits easily but the key on my TowTrust can be a bit fiddly to get in and out, think if it was a Westfalia it would be slightly easier, that said I've had no problems with it and very happy with the final fit.

For extra braking distance when towing. All the safety systems need to be coded for the towbar.

Is this a dealer only job or a vcds intervention?

thanks

Hi yesman, your post is why I put mine on the forum yesterday, our proposed purchase sportline plus 190 scr dsg 4x4 estate has factory tow bar wiring installed but dealer says they cant fit one and pointed me to an independent supplier /fitter, I need clarification asap as towing a caravan /trailer ability is a must.

Great … not! Just got my 68 SEL Exec 190 tdi dsg 4x4 and yes, the Skoda dealer warned a retrofit would cost over £2K for those reasons.

So it would seem having a towbar fitted to this vehicle configuration is not really a sensible option! Quite ironic given that all in that would seem the best spec version traction-wise for towing a larger Caravan! Maybe adverts should carry a warning or caveat, especially if the vehicle is being sold by a Skoda Dealer!

I had only intended to use it to tow a small trailer around town.

Looking for advice🙃 I purchased a genuine retractable towbar for my Superb 3v5 2.0TDI 4x4 and fitted it at the weekend. It came with the towing control unit 5H1 907 383, i was expecting to see the loam sitting waiting for me behind the plastics in the boot, however this was not the case. The instalation guide that came with the towbar says i need the loom that goes back to the dash 3V0055204C https://www.oemvwshop.com/3v0055204c-leitungssatz-ohne-steckdose-fur-anhangerbetrieb-skoda-superb-3v-p1654915/#gallery looking it up online it says in the installation guide that its not suitable for 2.0TDI 140KW 4X4s😭 any one any experience with fitting to same model?

So I purchased the OEM wiring loom and installed on my superb 3v5 2.0TDI 4x4, got a local diagnostics guy to program with Skoda activation code and all is working as it should .
