Dashcam electrical supply / fuses

Featured Replies

Hello, 1st post from new member so if this has been answered then apologies.

I have fitted a Nextbase 422GW that I removed from my last car.  The physical stuff went OK until I got to the power feed from the fusebox.

On previous cars, when the ignition key is removed from the switch, many of the fuses are simply dead - they only activate when the ignition is on i.e. they are NOT permanently live.  I tried to find one of these in the fusebox by choosing suitable fuses for equipment that is clearly OFF when the ignition is off AND is not part of the safety critical series of fuses (in case the dashcam goes bang and takes the system out) such as the left hand electric windows.

EVERY fuse position that I tried (by taking out the original fuse and pushing the nextbase "piggy back" connector into the fuse position but without adding the original fuse (to be replaced when I had sorted a suitable fuse position) made the dashcam power up and start to charge / work i.e. they were live WITHOUT THE IGNITION BEING SWITCHED ON AND THE KEY REMOVED FROM THE SWITCH.  I find this most odd but the only conclusion I can reach is that the car electrical systems have now become more sophisticated and (for example) the electric windows have power supplied via the fusebox (on a permanently live basis) but only go live when the ignition is switched on controlled by the system downstream of the fuse / fusebox.

The dealer gave me the fuse numbers that they use to wire dashcams and the result is the permanent live fuse.

The net result (and it was the same with EVERY fuse positon that I tried) is that I cannot find a fuse position that is NOT pemanently live hence it suppies power at all times to the dashcam.  I spoke to Nextbase who suggested that the dashcam should be in Parking Mode in which it powers down but then monitors vibration - it would switch on and record for 5 minutes if for example something hit the parked car - this does use a very small amount of power 24 hours a day.  I have done this but I really wanted a NOT permanently live fuse position - Is there one or have I guessed right that ALL the fuses are permanently live with the downstream electrical control systems managing the individual pieces of equipment?

Thoughts and advice clearly welcome from someone who understands modern Skoda electrickery better than I do!!!  Thanks,  Frank

Fuse 7, and 39-46 inclusive and fuse 50 of the cabin fuseholder all appear to be ignition switched.

Pete, I will check this out in full this week so thank you very much for the reply.  Quick question - how do you know this?  Is there a source that you have or just experience?  Thanks again, Frank

For 7 euro plus tax you can get an hour of access to erWin Skoda, the online official information resource.

Circuit diagrams are amongst many of the pdfs you can download.

Fuse tables are at the end of such docs.

Not all countries allow access to this, I think Australia is one that doesn't.

I fitted my Nextbase without any problems in finding an ignition-switched supply.  I can't imagine that your car could be any different.  Normally I would have gone outside and checked which fuse I piggy-backed off - but due to back issues I am currently incapable of bending over!

I did a quick search here. I can't post the link, but I have copied a previous post from this forum that hopefully may assist you:

orry for hijacking this thread, let  me know if I should open a new one. I got the the Garmin Mini parking cable. It has three connections: ground, permanent live and accessory. I was testing with a multimeter today and found some suitable empty slots with no fuses in them but they still have the contact points.

Battery always on (as measured)
12 - Heated steering wheel ( I don't have it )
24 - Phonebox, GSM antenna, USB connection, Infotainment screen  ( why empty? )
32 - Passenger belt tensioners
34 - Driver belt tensioners

Accessory
45 - Windscreen wiper ( why empty? )
46 - Seat heating - rear ( I don't have that )

I tested with 46 & 32 and the camera seems to work fine. I chose those two because I have one mini "piggy-back" connector and one standard size.  My guess is that the " passenger belt tensioners" is some advanced feature that my car isn't equipped with, but I'm not 100% sure. I can definitely use 12 as the always on, I definitely don't have a heated steering whell, but it's a mini size fuse, so I'd have to buy another mini "piggy-back" connector.  Do you guys think it's okay to use 46 & 32 for the camera?

Hello anyone who is getting updates to this post - The problem is now resolved with the dashcam connected to an "ignition on" fuse in the fusebox, actually number 55 which is shown as Not Used in the handbook and indeed was empty in my fusebox.

I must have been having a REALLY  bad day when I could not make it go to plan earlier this week.  All I can think of is that my CPU overheated in the warm weather and started doing weird things when trying to find a NOT permanently live feed.

A bit cooler today and a really simple job (that I supposedly had done earlier this week) to find a (preferably) empty fuse holder that was not live when ignition off.

Anyway, job all done and again, thanks to the people who replied and maybe others who thought about it but did not respond.  My fault entirely.

Sorry if I am posting wrongly but I have a 2023 Fabia which came installed with a usb-c connection behind mirror which I was told would power a dash am. Just received a canyon dash am and tried to power it with usb-c to usb- cable connected to connection behind mirror but doesn’t power up. Checked camera in a store with usb- c cable and it worked but the power was coming from a charger which is 12v seemingly. I spoke to a guy who installs cams and he said the usb port that is installed by Skoda is not powerful enough. Local Skoda garage said if it is powering my phone it should power calm and that it is a compatability issue. Any help would great. Cheers in advance

Perhaps post in the Fabia forum as this is the Kamiq one!

Thanks for the reply. Will do

Great thread, thanks. I've successfully wired in the power - I'm struggling to hide the cabling under the edge of the trim. Any ideas?

Was there not a blunt tool in the fitting kit?
