Winter Wheel Pictures & Recommendations

After ordering a Superb Sportline TDI last week, I'm now in that 3 month limbo waiting for news of when it will arrive (that I'm sure you are all too aware..!)

I've started looking at winter wheels (assuming it will arrive sometime close when I'll need to change over.)

I didn't find a "Winter Wheels Photos" thread like there was on the Octavia forum.

I have the homologated tyres sizes for the Superb (from the thread here & the dealer) & will almost definitely go from 19" to 17" for winter.

Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for winter wheels for the superb?
I've ordered the DragonSkin yellow so I'm assuming something grey/black will look good & be easy to keep clean.

I have the 17" Dezent TD Anthracites on my Octavia which I'm really pleased with.

No issues at all after 9 years & in much better condition that the Skoda wheels which were 4x the price.

Jumping into the discussion late, so please disregard this if it's already mentioned, but... you can also consider All-Season tires with Alpin/Snowflake indication. I don't know how much snow you'll be seeing (Switzerland isn't ALL snow in the winter right?), but in many tests it has shown that all-season tires are much better in dealing with rain and higher fall/spring temperature than full on winter tires. Especially with the "hot" winters we've been having recently, and the crazy hot weeks early feb the last few years all-seasons might be a better option.

But again, if you are living in a very snowy place, the full on winter tires have the all-season's beat in snow conditions nine ways from Sunday, so that would then be the better option!

I run these as my winters.

  • I was in Germany at the weekend & saw this superb with Alutec alloys that I thought looked pretty nice (18s rather than 17s though). The anthracite will look good with the DragonSkin I think

In Switzerland it really depends where you live & whether you go to the mountains for skiing often.

I'm by lake Geneva and it's rare that the normal roads here are affected by snow (maybe once or twice a year but they are always quickly cleared).

But if you live above 1000m or drive to the mountains at the weekend for skiing then you will encounter snow & bad road conditions constantly for the winter months.

I'm not a big skier but take the kids for lessons every weekend during the winter so I'll take winter tyres.

I also like to change the wheel during the winter to keep the OEM wheels in better condition avoiding the snow, grit & antifreeze on the roads.

Just about to push the button on my order as my car should arrive in a few weeks.

Am I correct to assume that the current model of Superb does not have "active" tyre pressure sensors fitted in the wheels?

It just uses a wheel speed "calculation" for the TPMS the same as the Octavia I have?

yep, just uses the ABS wheel sensors.

Winter wheels finally arrived.

I went for the Borbet V 17" Anthracite in the end due to the automatic ECE certification.

Here's a quick photo of them out of the box.

I'll add another when they're mounted on Wednesday.

They arrived just in time, the first snow arrived today

Here they are fitted.

Even in the light they are darker than I was hoping & I think the 17" wheel does look a bit small with the large tyre sidewall.

However overall I'm pretty happy with them.

The ride is very nice & it will be good to keep the summer wheels looking nice longer.

@Gabbodid the wheels and tyres come together as a package, or purchased separately, as I am interested to see the price in Switzerand of the 215/55/17 Conti TS870P.

I got them as "complete" set from Reifen.ch (formerly pneuexperte.ch)

The Borbet V was 120chf & the Conti TS870 P 98V was 159chf.

With the mounting, balancing & shipping the total was 1190chf.

I used to work for Conti (not in the tyre group) so have always had an affiliation to them.

However similar "premium" branded tyres from the same site were the same price give or take.

You can probably find them cheaper as I didn't look at any sites that didn't off the Borbet or Dezent wheel that I wanted.

Thanks for the reply. The Conti’s seem cheap compared to UK prices!

It's a few years since I bought tyres for my Octavia 18" summers & 17" winters but I was a bit surprised that price of the size for the superb. They were higher than I expected.

I considered 18" winters for the superb until I saw the price of the tyres.

Switzerland is funny sometimes with price.

Despite typically being very high, often certain things (e.g. Electronics/tvs) are much cheaper than Europe.

Perhaps some things have reduced VAT but I'm not really sure of the reason.

@Gabbo

for 17" check also 225/55r17, fits perfectly

The Skoda official rims are actually very nice, I'd happily have most of them as my summer or winter wheels.

It's just a shame the prices are so inflated.

If they'd reduce them by >50% they'd sell a lot more...

Sorry to ask, but I'm really struggling.

I need some all weather or winter tyre for a holiday.

I currently have 235/40/19 8J ET45 XL (96V)

I have seen for sale 235/45/17 7.5J ET44 but not XL (97V)

They are Audi wheels.

Can anyone confirm if these are ok?

I have looked on "will they fit" website but still unsure.

Does the XL matter?

Thanks in advance.

What's shown in the "results" will tell you whether there is a circumference difference with the tyres you are selecting & the offset won't interfere when turning.

The tyres you selected are not standard OEM dimensions.

They are as below for the 17":

215/55 R17 ET41 6.5j

215/55 R17 ET40 7J

XL stands for Extra Load and I guess isn't really important.

The base tyre rating in the Superb is 94H and the XL tyres seem only available on the higher speed rating.

The offset differnce is only 4mm which is not much.

I think the rule of thumb is less than 5% circumference difference is ok to keep the speedo within tolerance but in sure some others can confirm.

Thank you.

Have added the results.

I've always been told less than 3%.

Those tyres will be nearly 14mm different in radius. I wouldn't want to do that. My personal variation is within a tread depth which is usually around 7 or 8mm.

disk looks ok, but tire size too small!

-3.8% to OEM sizes 235/45r18; 215/55r17 etc.

-5.2% to optimal winter size 225/55r17

omho, this link will give better visualisation

The outside diameter of 235/45R17 is too small for the Superb MK3.

When people say up to 5% difference in outside diameter is ok, they normally mean up to 5% bigger than standard, not smaller. It depends how the engine's torque characteristics cope with pulling the oversize gearing and with big differences you would need to check that the speedometer doesn't underread.

5% bigger in outside diameter is actually quite extreme, but some people manage that, although most would choose a much smaller difference...perhaps up to 1.5% to 3% bigger outside diameter than standard.

As the Audi rims are 7.5Jx17 ET44 (and presumably 5/112 57.1), then that would be an ideal rim width and offset for 235/55R17 when fitted to the Superb MK3.

As you can see in the chart below, 235/55R17 has an outside diameter 2.9% bigger than 235/40R19.

Outside diameter of tyres

235/40R19 670.6mm

235/55R17 690.3mm (+2.9% compared to 235/40R19)

225/55R17 679.3mm (+1.3% compared to 235/40R19

215/55R17 668.3mm (-0.3% compared to 235/40R19)

225/50R17 656.8mm (-2.1% compared to 235/40R19)

235/45R17 643.3mm (-4.1% compared to 235/40R19)

The Vredestein Quatrac Pro has been around for many years, but it's recently been updated to the Pro+ model as shown in the link below. It's one of the few all-season tyres that has a non-directional tread pattern, so can be fitted in any position on the car.

Going by the results, the speedo would over read by 4.24% so they would be on the safe side when driving.

62.5kph instead of 60kph.

@Shugmo assuming  you are going skiing somewhere or that has mandatory "winter/snow" tyre regulations?

The speeodmeter usually overreads when on standard tyres, so if you fitted a tyre size that was over 4% smaller than standard (eg. 235/45R17) the speedo might overread by almost 10%, ie. an indicated 60mph might mean you are only doing an actual 55mph, etc.

Google maps has a GPS speedo readout feature, so you can use that to see how accurate the speedo is.

Visiting the Highlands in February.

It's about 10 hour drive for me and don't fancy doing that on Summer tyres.

If it's just for a one-off trip, have you considered just fitting "all season" tyres to your existing wheels?

Or asking a garage if they have some used winter/season tyres?

You can then keep them for a few years and refit you existing tyres when they need replacing?

Are the Audi wheels especially cheap?

Otherwise, all of the tyre websites will provide wheels & tyres fitted and delivered to a garage with the fitting included.

The cheapest 17" wheels should start from £60ish and maybe around £70-80 for mid range winter tyres.

In the end, from my point of view, the wheels you are considering will fit and the speedo should over read which is ok, so as long as you don't drive like Colin McRae or hit the German autobahn they will be ok.

However, please consider the advice from the others too though and make your own decision.

In the end, If you are buying wheels and tyres, it's probably better to buy something correct for the car that you can use again even if it costs slightly more.

scroll down my first post in Mk3.FL codings tread,

to the table with Tire Circumstance original/changed values,

which are wrote from my 0% standard sized 235/45r18(= 215/55r17)

and my winter set, custom choice +1.5%, 225/55r17

in two words, last gives closer to reality values on speedometer
