OTA of System Update not working - TPI?

Thank you for contributing @JamesK .

It would be very interesting if there exists another 2021 Octavia mk4 1.5 TSI (like yours) in Britain that is receiving Online System Updates OTA (or at least has the box Over-the-Air Update and ticked below General Information).

@Lowepepsi2004 , not directly comparable since you have a VRS but does the box Over-the-Air Update show up below General Information for your VIN?

@JamesK , do you have Columbus in your car (since you have built in navigation) or Swing or Bolero with navigation bought as an add-on?

@SteveTheElder , do you have Columbus, Swing or Bolero? Does the box Over-the-Air Update show up below General Information for your VIN?

which seems to imply some of the super early models could get it; but there was a period when it couldn't. Then, theoretically it should be able to get it (OTA update) from 11/2020 production date. I have a dreary sequence of device part number and software changes done by the dealer (but, of course, no helpful detail on what they actually did). I put 1941 on myself and it seems to be stable enough for me to not wish to get any higher.

I do not have this little box ticked (sob).

@SiWaiting I have Columbus in my car. It's the SE L First Edition model, so it was standard for that model.

@inspectorman Build date for my car was 20/7/2020... which, based on the information you found puts it at the start of the period where they were fitting parts that were not suitable for OTA updates. Back then was the Covid/lockdown times, so they may argue there was a shortage of suitable parts...?

In order to get to the bottom of this it would be great if

  1. everyone who have an older version of the mk4 like f.eks. 2020-2022 with hardware H56 (see Settings/System information) that have received System Updates OTA (f.eks. update from vNNNX to vNNNY of the infotainment system, i.e. NOT the minor updates like f.eks. update of the manual or the app list in the infotainment) would say so by posting a reply in this thread

  2. everyone who have not received System Updates OTA would answer the following questions by posting a reply in this thread (my answers below)

    1. Have you followed the instructions in the manual of YOUR car describing how to enable Online System Updates OTA? (see original post for the instructions in the manual of MY car. To find the latest version of YOUR manual: go to https://www.skoda-auto.com/, select Services, click on Skoda Owner's Manuals, enter your VIN (find it on front window bottom driver side alt on door frame driver side alt under the bonnet), select Language + click Confirm)

      Answer: Yes

    2. Have you verified that Skoda claims that your car supports OTA? (go to https://www.skoda-auto.com/, select Connectivity, click on Connect Availability, top left select your country + click Confirm, click Select vehicle, enter your VIN (find it on front window bottom driver side alt on door frame driver side alt under the bonnet) + click Confirm, scroll down to General Information and check whether there's a box for Over-the-Air Update that is ticked)

      image.png

      Answer: Yes

    3. What is the Device part number and Hardware displayed in your infotainment? (see Settings/System Information in your Infotainment)

      Answer: 5E3035820D, H56

See below...

@SiWaiting I have Columbus

It would be interesting to collate details of early cars. I think we will probably find those of us with the H device part number are not receiving infotainment updates.

Agree.

For my car...

Online manual instructions/conditions to enable OTA set : Yes

OTA shown as available for my VIN in my country : Yes (screenshot below) - the only difference that I can see from @JamesK car

Hardware Version: H56

Device part number: 5E3035816H

Current Infotainment version: 1941

OTA Updates currently being received for:

Infotainment: No

Maps: Yes

Apps: Yes

Production date 16 Sep 2020

Hardware Version: H56

Device part number: 5E3035816J

So.... H and J are non-OTA. ISTR that the device part number was not what it said (a part number) but was a combination of software and hardware. I could be wrong.

My car has gone C -G - J

and 1664 - 1668 - 1806 - 1896 - 1941. With a replacement steering wheel after the dealer tried say it wasn't that. Exactly as much fun as it sounds.

added production date

I'm not entirely sure what the production date for mine is, always assumed it was 'summer' 2020 given that it was registered in September 2020.

The other day, as a result of a subject access request to the Škoda Data Manager, I got a .json file about the car. Despite spending 20 years working in IT [infrastructure] I don't 'speak' .json, but a bunch of dates in there suggest a build in early July 2020 - see screenshot

A bit too early to draw a conclusion but IF, and that's a big if, what is provided by Skoda below General Information is reliable, then neither Hardware (@Lowepepsi2004 has the same Hardware) nor Device Part Number might be relevant in determining whether the vehicle in question has support for OTA of System Updates.

@SteveTheElder has the box below General Information, @JamesK doesn't. But both have the same Hardware as well as Device Part Number. However, neither have received System Updates OTA.

I have heard someone say that Skoda have said that there exists a "module" in the car specifically for OTA. Unfortunately I don't know anymore than that.

If one could figure out what that "module" is called and then access the "hidden" menu in the infotainment where the firmware of each module is listed (I believe I have read here on the forum that such a menu exists. Maybe in the thread related to manually updating to 1985?), then the firmware versions of the OTA module can be compared. All it takes to get System Updates OTA might be an update of the firmware of the OTA module.

@SteveTheElder There's someone on eBay who offers a VIN decoding service. Costs around £2.60. You send him your VIN and he'll send you back a PDF containing everything about your car.... including the build date, and all the options present on the car. It had been posted on this forum a while ago.I did it just because I was interested to know more details on my car.

A lot of interesting info in your post. Thanks!

However, the above No is a bit confusing. It intends to answer the following

Do you mean that the manual for your VIN does not describe how to active Online System Update OTA?

To complicate matters further I've went through some old screenshots of my infotainment. When it was on firmware 1668, the device part number was reported as 5E3035816B.

image.png

When it was upgraded to firmware 1896 was when the device part number moved to 5E3035816H:

Added screenshot of 1896 firmware

As far as I can remember from other threads, the part number corresponds to the initial firmware of the unit. Sometimes it gets changed up with updates.

And just to mention it briefly, it seems that 19855 is no longer the latest MIB3 firmware. I’ve read in Capra forums about OTAs to 1988.

Correct. Nothing at all in the manual.

My user manual is dated 07.2020. It does detail the online functions but is fairly sparse on detail:

Yes, very sparse. Looks the same in my manual. It's a bit of a puzzle so that's why I made the compilation in my original post in this thread (but who am I to make such a compilation, I don't get System Updates OTA! 😵‍💫).

Does anyone know if it is possible for me to get the version number of the installed firmware of my car's OCU (Online Control Unit, ie Skoda's name for the Telematic Control Unit, control unit 75 I think) without a tool like VCDS/OBDeleven?

I can't find anything called OCU in the hidden System menu (Engineering).

Thank you for sharing!

(additional info: @BeaverRS has not received system updates OTA and has a Skoda Octavia mk4 Nov. 2020 Combi TDI 150 (110)/DSG)

I have a 1.0TSI SE Technology Estate registered Nov 2020, purchased second hand March 2025.

I had, and still have, SOS pop pop issues despite the dealer renewing both the SOS module and OCU module within the warranty period. I am also unable to login as a primary user, just get the 'Sorry, unable to load your settings' message. Apart from that, love the car!

My responses:

Online Manual Instructions Followed for Enabling OTA: Yes

OTA Update shown on Skoda-auto / General Information Page: No

Hardware Version: H56

Device part number: 5E3035816H

Current Infotainment version: 1985 - these have been done manually using info and files from this site. Car was on 1896 when purchased.

OTA Updates currently being received for:

Infotainment: No

Maps: No, done manually from the Skoda update portal.

Apps: Yes, last one received Monday for the Offers app.

OCU module part number 5WA035284A software version 0067.

@varls How did you go about getting that piece of information?

(I think the latest software/firmware version for the OCU is 0143 or 0144, but I might be wrong)

And thank you for sharing!

@varls - I would get this resolved why you still have warranty with Skoda. Don't let the dealer off the hook with it, or try another dealer.

Edited by JamesK

@SiWaiting I just used Car Scanner Pro (free version) with an OBD2 scan tool and the 'ECU identifiers' option from the menu screen.

@JamesK It wasn't a Skoda dealer, or approved dealer, and it's now out of warranty. More of an annoyance at the moment but will look to get the firmware updated at some point.

This is what you can see in the VCDS log

The first scan here is early on; the second scan here is recent. You can see the serial number has changed which implies Skoda ate the cost of the unit change under warranty (hundreds of poonds...)
