  1. A truth about an electric car.... 3000 miles around France. No issues with finding a charger, no issues with queuing, average charge cost 29p / kWh, average consumption 4.0 mi/kWh, average cost 7.51p 7.87/mile (includes charging at home before leaving and on return plus one free charge of about 25kW). We charged whenever the humans needed a stop. Generally this coincided with meal times and generally we charged more than needed so we could finish our meal. Truth is, EVs are no more difficult to tour with than ICE vehicles. Our ID.4 was quiet, comfy and very easy to drive over long distances on the Autoroute with ACC and Lane Assist helping keep things in check. Highly recommended! EDIT: I forgot to account for the one month subscription to Tesla membership charging of £11 in my cost per mile. New average above.
  2. @Luckypants thanks for offering some positivity instead of the constant whining and bickering. 👍
  3. If you let them play that game they've got you against the wall to start with. I'd be adopting the "it's not going anywhere til it's been paid for" stance. They can send an assessor out.
  4. OK let me use my drive from Bezannes near Reims to Beaulieu-sur-Mer as an example as I have the costs for that. I left Bezannes with 100% battery at 6:05 am (easy for you if you can charge at home) as my hotel had a charger and drove to the Tesla Superchargers at Chalon-sur-Soane, we charged for about 30 minutes while we went to the toilet and ate breakfast (Pain au chocolat from the nearby Super-U). This was 62kWh and cost €17.98. We then drove to Le Pontet superchargers near Avignon and charged again, this time 51kWh that cost €15.30. We went to the toilet and got a coffee at the nearby mall but had to hurry a bit as the car was done charging. We then drove to Beaulieu-sur-Mer arriving at 18:30 due to bad traffic in Nice costing an hour. We drove at 105kph as the range predictor app I used (A Better Route Planner) suggested an extra 40 minute charge stop would be needed to sustain the higher consumption at 130kph and wiped out any time saving. So that is a 965km journey we made on 5th September. Two stops for breaks / toilet and charging. We topped up the charge in the car again at our hotel which cost a flat €7 on top of the car parking. Total cost for the trip €40.28 (+ a portion of the €12 Tesla membership subscription) On another leg of our tour we charged at Ionity on the Autoroute which was €0.52/kWh. I hope that is helpful.
  5. I hate you (not really 😘) See, this is the type of post I really don't need to read. A recent solar installation and I'm exporting loads to the grid (double what we use). It's got me thinking that maybe it's time..... but a recent 900 mile round trip and my very comfortable GTI managed 50mpg at some points, which I was really happy about. But then long term (30k miles) it's cost me 19.1ppm, so almost three times your ID.4. I've already got an e-bike, a mobility scooter, so EV should only be a small step. But I like my petrol car, and I want to not like EV's, but all three I've driven have been great, which is not helping 🙄 Gnarrr, harrumph, grumble, whinge...... I don't wanna take my head out of the sand 😳 G
  6. Indeed, here in Yorkshire, some folk are ahead of the curve.
  7. There are now 26 Tesla charging sites open in the UK to non-Tesla cars and the cost is 45-53p or 30-35p with a subscription. I know geographically they are sparse north of the M25, but its a start and new V4 supercharger sites will be open to all (one in Stoke opened at the weekend. Tottenham and Reading Services already opened) In France, many more SC sites are open to all and its having an effect from what I observed, supercharger sites have 50/50 spilt between Teslas and other makes, This puts pressure on other suppliers price wise, so even on the Autoroute chargers were around 50p for 300kW chargers. I hope Tesla open more sites in the UK, especially those at MSAs, to break the price fixing cartel operated by the companies belonging to Charge UK trade association.
  8. You'll get a laugh out of this. I left the car it to get a door seal reclipped and mentioned the grill noise. When picking up, your man says to me, the mechanic says you are very religious! I wasn't sure what he was on about and then he showed me what the mechanic found slipped down in the front of the dashboard - they were causing the noise in the grill!!! Careless stuff from one of the last 2 owners. but issue solved!
  9. @J.R.Today if i charged at home regular tariff it is 30 pence a kWh, from the 1st October 28 pence a kWh. This month i have charged over 81 kWh for Free on public chargers & Tesco (7kW) and another 30 kWh at CPS chargers (50 kW) That 111 kWh getting 4 miles a kWh is good for 444 miles. In the next 2 weeks i will do about 800 miles. 200 miles will cost me 55 pence a kWh & another 200 will be @ 35 pence a kWh, and 400 will be Free charging on CPS chargers.
  10. I can assure you I'm not willing to be screwed over, I just didn't realise I was The written off vehicle has already been collected last week before any replies to say otherwise Can't go back in time, but I did remove the spare wheel 🙂
  11. Tremendously bright Moon this evening .............

They changed that i think. All season tyres with so little tread in winter conditions would be pretty much like the best of Summer / ECO tyres as VW Group fit with a full tread.
  13. 2 points
@EnterName Thank you for this information, I did know that once the 3mm mark was reached performance was degraded, but did not know by how much, I feel much happier that I am having new tyres fitted tomorrow before I have to go to Heathrow Sunday to pick up my wife and sister-in-law on their return from Madeira.
  14. 2 points
Has ROSPA Commissioned anything in the last 20 years as the manufacturers have carried on developing tyres? Some come with very different depths of tread new now and ECO bias and with crap friction / traction / longevity, Look as the tread lasts, pity their durability does not.
  15. Idle fees apply when a Supercharger station is at 50% capacity or more. Idle fees double when the station is at 100% capacity. https://www.tesla.com/en_gb/support/charging/supercharger/idle-fee
  16. The OEM part numbers for the springs depends on the car's build codes as shown below. 17. Maybe i do? I buy fuel at least 9 times a month and have never witnessed anyone park at a pump and not put fuel in. (must be lucky) I have waited for someone who has used the shop for groceries afterwards The stations i use do tend to have space to park on the forecourt though.
  18. ICE cars at the pump normally buy fuel before entering the shop, if they don't want fuel they park elsewhere on the forecourt?
  19. All my £67 a month government payments were paid to electricity Bills i had to ask for a refund to pay to the gas bill
  20. Carbs were rather poor at giving a well atomised, correct ratio mixture compared with electronic fuel injection, so the environment the plugs had to work in was a lot more variable and generally worse for longevity.
  21. So you've never seen 2 petrol stations are different prices along the same stretch of a road? The truth about electric car is that different people use their car differently, benefit of EV is that doesn't have to conform to petrol station refuel speed and payment model. Charging at home is super convenient and completely removes the need to even think about petrol stations. I bet if people can have a bottomless jerry tank at home, no one would refuse. So insisting EV must be compared in the same way as refuelling at petrol station is missing the point. You explained why we should discuss public charging pricing and availability, I don't disagree. You haven't really explained why we should remove all talk of home charging other than "no incentive for those who can't". Well, if certain bit of information doesn't apply to you, you don't have to respond to it.
  22. Are you sure you're looking at the correct control unit? Steering Assist (VCDS module 44 under chassis tab, for cross-reference) rather than steering wheel, maybe? If there is no real fault it will almost certainly clear itself after a few drive cycles though.
  23. @ApertureS- u referring to this? The test was done by DSC Sport in the US. "We had some pretty interesting findings today when shock dynoing the Bilstein Damptronic B16's for a MK7 Golf R (part number 49-255874). We found the Bilsteins only are able to control the rebound, while the factory shocks are able to control both compression and rebound with their valving. This means the Bilstein Damptronics are a less capable setup when looking at compression adjustment, but still happen to have slightly greater rebound range. Basically the only benefits to the Damptronics are adjustable spring perches to change ride height and stiffer springs. But are not beneficial when looking at the "active" functionalities of the shock. This is due to the valve used in this specific shock, however in other Bilstein kits we have tested, like the Porsche Kit, the valve is different and was able to control both rebound and compression."
  24. Yes, the info you gave was OK, but it also highlights the extremely wide charge bands which can be off-putting, something that does not happen to that extent with ICE fuel. The video was very good, but it also showed he did 3 stops and charged at all of them, whereas in an ICE it would have been possible to complete the trip without refuelling and still have shorter comfort breaks. It also IMO showed that you need to pay attention to things like battery temps and also need to have a load of different apps on your phone and charge cards etc to suit different chargers (providers). With an ICE, you only need a debit or credit card, regardless of the supplier of your fuel. Hopefully that clarifies it a bit?
  25. I get not everyone can charge at home. But why dismiss the possibility of cheaper motoring for those who can? Why insist compare apple to apple when orange is better in every way?
  26. I thought the cost of a kwh of electricity was way beyond 19p in the UK now, I guess what doesnt help is that there is no State Regulated Tariff, a base price around which the energy suppliers can discount on one hand (off peak) while charging more on the other. How much per kwh would someone pay taking out a contract today?
  27. To really **** you off, my average cost over 33k miles now 5.9p / mile. I'll admit this figure has been helped by a lot of free Tesco / Aldi charging in the first year and some other free charges, which is something petrol or diesel never get. I had solar fitted at the beginning of July and now any excess can be dumped into the car for 'free', so July & August has seen my costs at less than 3p / mile. This is without an EV tariff for leccy as smart meter does not work, so I'm paying about 19p. Things will get more expensive over winter due to poorer efficiency and less solar, unless something changes on the smart meter front. Financially it stacks up for me, the fuel cost saving pays the increased monthly PCP cost over a similar diesel.
  28. Spot on, the OP is willingly going down the path towards being effed over, the same path that Graham Butcher took, the value of a spare wheel which the car may never have had (big hint!) pales into insignificance compared to how much the OP is dropping his trousers for. The one thing to remember is the vehicle remains your property until the insurance payout has been agreed and paid.
  29. 2 points
I’ve found that the trick to getting the spare wheel out is to remove the polystyrene insert, unscrew the plastic retaining nut, then give the plastic retaining bolt a quarter turn and remove it from its bayonet type socket. This gives more clearance to get the wheel out.

& there is no guarantee that the big brands sell safer tyres than cheaper brands because Pirelli, Continental, Dunlop. Good year etc can produce some real crap. Or Horses for courses, or tyres that are maybe All Season because they are on all year, but they are certainly not All Weather or All Seasons of a UK year tyres.
  31. 1 point
Yeah I've heard this claim made by Michelin. "Strong" is a somewhat odd term to use when describing tyre performance, and allows plenty of wriggle room for interpretation. It might be true that 1.6mm of treat will shift water out of the way as well as 6mm, but I'd like to see some independent tests evidence to support it.
  32. Unless they have fitted an engine as in Youtube spoofs they will be shopping. But then plenty do that at filling stations without putting in fuel.
  33. Is it Ground Hog day? There is a big thread here, there are loads of other threads. Asking the same question and expecting different answers is fair enough because there are different answers. It is a Post Code Lottery in the UK as far as Charging Infrastructure but Public Charging in September 2023 goes from £0.00 to £1.00. Discount the free & 7 kW Fast charging, so you are going from about 30 pence to £1.00 a kWh for 50, 100, 100 + Rapid to Ultra Rapid charging. ............... This has already appeared on here. But here we go again. (Nobody is charging £4 a kWh) *** Where he sees or smells these SMELL FILLING STATIONS i have no idea, MFG or BP Pulse ones or any others. Is he hanging about the HGV pumps? Not that they are smelly these days of for many a year now IME.***
  34. Not that far beyond. The price cap is (state regulated via OFGEM) is 30p / kWh. Many suppliers now have deals below that. I am on Octopus's Tracker tariff which tracks the wholesale price on a daily basis, this tariff is open to all. during times of lots of wind energy I've seen my price as low as 12p/kWh and highest I've seen (since July) is 21p / kWh. The 19p I quoted was for September. I normally give a weekly reading and Octopus average the cost over the week, so I pay a variable price, but in the context of my post I felt it was fair to give the September price I paid of 19p.
  35. Sorry to add to your predicament, I regularly charge off my solar: https://www.speakev.com/threads/charging-off-excess-solar-using-dumb-charger-and-home-assistant.177813/#post-3441721 😜 And it is close to 2p/mile for me using EV tariffs. Here's all the EV tariffs: Intelligent Octopus smart charging even helps lower my home usage cost by providing extra off-peak slots. My last bill, my average for ALL electricity I imported was just over 10p/kWh.
  36. 3,000 miles getting 3.7 miles a kWh is 811 kWh of electricity. @ a home tariff of 30 pence a kWh then that is £243.30. 3,000 getting 45 mpg is 67 gallons. @ £7.50 a gallon £500.
  37. I've made four insurance claims over the years, two at fault, two non fault, and I've never been asked to prove my occupation. G
  38. Even Kwiksh1t would be cheaper than that!🤪
  39. Hello Adam, normally, random faults after a battery replacement clear themselves - I suggest getting a diagnostic plugged in to check for any fault codes, then clear them.
  40. An outdated trope IMO. Same as the old tropes about Skoda being skips or having heated rear screens to keep your hands warm.

Jan 2022. So with all the parts gathered up it was time to get them on the car. With the 245 having the wider rear track from factory once the spacers were on and I got the wheels bolted back up I had a moment where I thought "this was a bad idea" because I was convinced it was going to scrub when loaded up, and been my "dad" car was still supposed to be practical. . . Anyway it was FLUSH but never caused any issues, even with 150kg of sand in the boot. 😁 then off for alignment on a local firms clampless alignment rig, very cool bit of kit. And the end result. . 😍. . Again how I think they should look from the factory.
  42. I may be wrong, but I think that problem with type-C is that it has different power supply capabilities which need to be negotiated between devices before supplying any power. I don't know how is it realized in Skoda side, but normally usb-c standard required proper resistors between CC lines and GND or communication chip which negotiates the maximum voltage and current. Some cables might not have any of these, neither some adapters. USB-C to micro USB will then work directionally (so power delivered from micro usb will be "visible" on the usb-c plug and not the other way round), but also not necessarely with all devices. For me 2 Aliexpress cables were not working. I ended up with having a usb-c -> usb-A adapter from Baseus and I cut and shortened original camera cable with usb-a plug to around 30cm. Soldering was required, but I was desperate:)

Hey, Car ordered at 22.06.2023 and picked up at 31.08.2023. Dealer couldn't believe the dates when he first heard about them. 2.0l 200KM 4x4 DSG in Style variant, very packed.
  44. It's not a scam AliExpress is a marketplace along the lines of TEMU. I use both of them on a fairly regular basis.

I tackled the engine bay and exterior in a single day, which just so happened to be the hottest day of the year at the time. Car was fully safe washed, fallout remover applied, tar and glue remover applied followed by clay bar. Out came the masking tape, and polishing could begin. From what I remember it was a good 8hrs+ on the exterior that day. With polishing done, it was time to get the wax down, shuffling the car around the drive to find shade and not bake the wax on 😬 Finished result was pretty good for "primer" grey.
  46. Personally i can not be doing with them. I do not always want my phone with me & when in the car i am hopeless using my left hand to use touch screens. Horses for courses and it is good there are choices within EV,s just as there are with ICE vehicles. There are going to be a very large number of used TESLA available just as there will be with other manufacturers vehicles. I am even crap driving and stretching a finger far left to get a button when driving a right hand drive car that has the various stuff to suit a left hand drive car other then the steering wheel moved to the other side. Lane keep assist has saved me a few times for crashing, burning or just kerbing a wheel. I do not have that anymore but then i do not need to use a touch screen either when driving my daily.
  47. Hello, welcome to the forum. No, whip it out before they collect it. So many vehicles are supplied without them nowadays anyway. Unlikely that Copart would know if your vehicle originally came with a spare.
  48. @Stenopus Even better: Full set of workshop manuals for free: https://cardiagn.com/2015-2018-skoda-superb-iii-3v-worshop-manual-owners-manual-wiring/ Note: You may sometimes struggle with downloading the documents. 2 possible solutions, then: - Retry with another web browser - Retry another day. The website is sometimes a little 'capricious'.... Enjoy!
