  1. Being told how "lucky" I am to own my own home. And that same person taking offence when I suggested my "luck" was down to years of make-do-and-mend and taking on evening and weekend work in addition to a full-time job in order to pay the mortgage.

  2. @anton these forums - unhelpful? sometimes. Unfriendly - sometimes. But that's life. About 3 years ago I bought a Mk4 Octavia which was 6 months old with a tad under 3k miles on the clock; a a lovely modern vehicle and a notable step up from my 14 plate 1.4 TSi Superb 'S'. The Octavia being an SEL First Edition it had more bells and whistles than I expected top be able to afford, happy days. Until that is about a week or so later I found the much discussed KPH/MPH issue - if it were not for these forums... I wouldn't have found others had the same issue I wouldn't have contacted Honest John (HJ) HJ wouldn't have contact Škoda UK senior management on my behalf I wouldn't have had a call from Škoda UK team I wouldn't have had a free loan car for five months whilst my car at the dealer for diagnostics to be carried out and the fix developed My car wouldn't have been the first in UK to have the fix installed I wouldn't have developed a great working relationship with my local dealer I wouldn't be the happy owner of said Mk4v Octavia - nigh on 40k miles later Equally... I wouldn't have been wound up by loads of inane and inappropriate comments from, at times, bloody minded individuals who ought to know better than hurl insults at other members I wouldn't have had loads of laughs I wouldn't have come across other members who I could call mates, even though I've never actually met them in person! All of that was a long winded (could have been longer) way of saying these forums really pi$$ me off sometimes, but there is way much more good stuff - hence I am still here 👍 So, hang on in here, keep reading, posting and enjoy the ride 😊

  3. My 98 year old mum was on great form today as her hair done by a new hairdresser and she was being complimented on it, and she likes me taking the dog into see her. Visits now have me first into the downstairs lounge to see some of the ladies who think the dog is a healing dog but really just wants treats or crumbs. Then the ladies and a few gents upstairs need to have a visit and then the carers like to give the dog attention.

  5. Not a chuckle, but I don't get what the Kate photo fuss is all about. Has the media not seen what every single child with a smartphone does with their photos. They come out with airbrushed mannequins that don't even resemble the subject of the photo any more. Kate tweaking something that isn't even in the interesting part of the picture (maybe she had a toy with her that she wanted removing from the shot?) is hardly the crime of the century. Poor woman has had a pretty serious operation it would seem and probably doesn't feel that great to start with. I'm not a Royalist, but as a human being, it seems unnecessarily cruel to put her through this media storm. Back on topic .

  7. I thought about where to post this, and decided it is a moment of joy. Bagpipes. I love bagpipes. Don't know quite what it is, but they really pull on my heartstrings. Last Tuesday was the funeral of our lovely friend Margaret. Possibly the most moving funeral I've been to (and I'm of an age now where I've been to dozens). Unbeknown to me, and most, as we gathered at the Crematorium and Margaret arrived, she was piped in by a solitary Piper. He was in full Uniform and it was incredibly moving. Even my hard-as-nails Daughter was a mess like I've not seen before. He piped her in, piped mid-ceremony, and piped her out. It was uncanny, but also joyous. It turned out, from the order of service, that the Piper was Margaret's Nephew. I'd no idea. I found out late last night (at Uckfield Carnival) from Margaret's Daughter, that he's a Pipe Sergeant in the London Scottish Regiment of the Scots Guard, and he had asked if he could do Margaret the honour. He was more recently seen piping at the funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II. I wasn't able to go and talk to Stuart as we left because he was playing. Nothing to do with the fact I couldn't have said much Full marks to StuartThePiper 👍 Margaret was a warm and joyful person, and he certainly added to the joy of our memory of her as she moves on. Gaz

  8. Talking with a lovely nurse this afternoon, who told me that my (Tuesday) CEA blood test result was 1.3. This is in the normal range, so no further treatment other than periodic scans and 'oscopies' required. I think this is as close as it gets to an 'all clear' statement for my bowel cancer.

  10. After 10 years of Skoda ownership, covering a Fabia vRS, Octavia vRS and finally the Superb Sportline Plus, it's time to say farewell. Whilst not a prolific poster here on the forums, I've really enjoyed reading about people's experiences, ownership journeys, and advice. The Superb replacement is very different - a Jaguar F-Type R coupe. It certainly doesn't have the space of the Superb 🤣 Thank you everyone for making this a fun place to be an owner and hope everyone continues to enjoy these great cars.

  12. Mum was never officially diagnosed with Vascular Dementia, although they thought that was probably most likely what it was. I always looked on her, once she had to move into a home, as still being "my mum", but the person in front of me was a sort of, broken shell that contained her. I've got a lifetime of fantastic memories and I have put her last few years to the back of my mind. A most hateful disease, dementia.

  14. Needing a larger family car that would cope with long journeys I started digging around for something. I was mainly after something interesting. So after spotting a Maserati Quattroporte online I popped up to drive it and after a short and fruitful haggle I bought a Maserati Quattroporte V6d. It's fairly rapid (275hp), huge inside, and possibly the quietest car I've ever driven. The ICE is dated (probably dated when it was new) but does bluetooth and DAB and that's 95% of my needs. Some of the switchgear is a bit meh (Chrysler stock) other parts of the car are pure quality. Dash is walnut and leather. Dealer put on a full set of front disks and pads (OEM), two new front springs (caused a 6 week delay), oil and filter change, and a very good valet. Bought from the dealer owner who owns a GTS version and is clearly a Maserati fan himself, I'm guessing the previous owner was also very careful as it it mint. Already terrified of kerbing the alloys and it's a total PITA to park as it is over 5.2m long. But, just look at it....snaps knicker elastic at 100 yards.

  16. The problem with internet forums being unfriendly or unhelpful per se, is the keyboard warrior (other names are applicable). If you look past that (or them), then this place is actually a really nice place. I'll get the kettle and the fire on for you, if you do so wish. I'm not on this as much as I was because family/work etc, but this place has been one of the best forum sites I've been on. The Mk1 Fabia page has definitely saved my bacon a few times, and I've managed to source parts to keep my aging (and ailing) Fabia on the road. There's some posts on here from the early days in 2002 that I've relied on before and suchlike. A forum thrives on its archive content. Definitely keep posting, @anton, anything you've got to say is appreciated.

  17. More feel good than actual joy. I pick up litter when I see it. If I'm out on my scooter it goes in the basket, and then gets dropped in the next bin/recycling I go past. This week I've pick up a brown McDonalds bag, two drinks cans and a beer bottle from out in my cul de sac, which so many people passed, looked at and did nothing. On Monday's recycling a glass bottle got smashed, and was simply left in the middle of the road; people drove around it. Yours truly toddled out with a broom and swept it up - wasn't hard, took moments. This afternoon a bloke walked past the front of my house. He stopped and looked at one of our broom shrubs. Then plucked a large sweet wrapper out of the broom, put it in a black plastic bin liner and walked off. No high viz, no identifying clothing, no idea who he is. As he walked on I saw he had an easy-reach/litter picker and picked another bit of rubbish up off the verge two doors down. Good man I thought to myself 👍 Gaz

  26. I have been emptying my mums house because she has had not go into a nursing home. She is 98 now and sadly it was time. That is not joyful but i have found pictures going back over 100 years of my mums & dads families and lots, boxes and boxes of them. I need to get lots of them scanned. There are ones of my dad when he was a member of the Tarlair Swimming club in the 1940,s when he met my mum and through the 1950,s to 1960,s when he was a Senior Champion in the North East. I have his medals and will donate them to the Tarlair Swimming Pool Macduff after it has undergone a multi million pound rebuild. It is a Lido that is easy to find on Youtube as model boat clubs, BMX / Skateboaders / Danny MacAskill etc have been posting and lots of the best Northern Light pics are taken there. These were sent to me today. My dad was Ernie Walker. This will have been before he broke his back at a fall from a ladder. He recovered from that and years latter doing a diving display there was a clash and he hit his back on a diving board and ended up back in traction.

  27. Fuming in the humid heat here this morning. Does anyone else suffer this infuriating sequence of events? 1. You identify a job you need to do at home that requires some part or tool that you don't have. 2. You get one bought in and it turns up. You put it somewhere sensible pending time and opportunity to do the work.... 3. The weekend comes round and you decide to press on and get it done. 4. The fecking item has beamed back up to its mothership, apparently.

  29. Hello all, So after ordering my new VRS and waiting 14 months for it. My 4x4 Diesel Octavia VRS has arrived and I absolutely love it. I have spec'd it up and to be fair I'm glad I did. The 1 thing I did forget to spec up which my previous Octavia had was the raised floor and adding the HUD although wasn't fussed about it when I did my test drive, until I realised I didn't order it. The black one is my previous car, Thankfully due to covid I bought the ex demo that couldn't be test driven, which I believe has quite a few options that are extra if you by one new, This one only has a 9170 since I bought it in 2020. I couldn't get over the fact the 2 car's drive so differently even though they're likely to have the same engine. Anyway one happy customer right here. No complaints so far! Just have to work out how I'm going to feed the nextbase rear camera wire through the roof lining. Cheers all.
