  1. It's not every day you get the chance to work on two iconic Italian supercars, so today was a very good day! The current owner had mentioned that they were looking a bit tired, (probably due to the less than excellent care they had received during my time as their owner) so after a consultation over a coffee and a fizzy fruit juice, it was decided that I would give them both a full detail to bring them back to proper condition. Bringing the first vehicle out into the work area revealed that it was indeed in rather poor shape. Lots of dust and dirt and some RDS on the roof. The interior was no better, so I knew I would need to strip the car down to do the job properly. With the bodyshell removed the full extent of the problem was revealed. The last 25 years of neglect had really left their mark. So, after removing the doors to clean separately, the whole car was de-dusted with a soft paintbrush. This was excellent for getting in the little nooks and crannies and getting under the rear wing which proved to be impossible to remove. It wasn't long before the interior and engine bay were clean again! Now to set to work on the paint! My usual combination of Autoglym Super-Resin Polish and Extra Gloss Protection were at the ready, and I set to work to remove as much of the scuffs to the paintwork as I could. After the polishing stage, the improvement was clear to see. Then a coat of Extra Gloss Protection was applied and the car re-assembled. I was most pleased with the results! Much of the scratching on the roof was gone and the black paint was now shining as it had when the car was new and still in its box. I even managed to get the doors to stay closed this time! After completing the same process on it's stablemate, the happy owner returned to inspect the vehicles. I love babysitting

  2. Nah it's dead simple. There is 2 bolts that join to the sliding pins, sometimes you need to stop these moving with an open ended spanner. Once you've undone these the caplier will come off with a push and tug, then push the piston back in with a bit of wood (make sure brake fluid cap is off) and a g clamp. Then pop the new pad in the carrier bracket and slide the caplier back over. And tighten! Simples.

  3. Jesus H - is this a **** take or what?. Go to a motor factors and buy some direct replacement LEDS and save yourself the cutting, soldering and possible blown load resistors!! I think I spent £20 and that was only becvause I swapped the rear passenger set as well!

  4. You're all missing the point. The country is nearly bankrupt because Gordon Brown is a fat idiot who can't add up. He spent more than he raised in tax revenue, and borrowed from the future to pay for it. Gideon Osborne is a useless toff who can't add up. He is continuing to spend more than he raises in tax revenue. He is borrowing from the future to pay for it. Spending has to be cut. The government raises about £590 billion in taxes, but spends about £720 billion. We can't continue to spend more than we raise. I run a business and pay VAT, corporation tax, dividend tax, income tax, employers and employees National Insurance. The government takes about 40% of my gross revenues in tax. I think I pay enough tax already. I don't see why I should pay more tax to fund sick pay, pensions and generous holiday entitlements that I cannot afford to have myself. Why shouldn't public sector wages and benefits be cut?

  5. Its Monday, its midday, so its time for . . . no, not a Crackerjack pencil, but a cold-call from the Daily Telegraph Subscription Services. Oh Ode to joy, Rodney ! Despite signing-up to the TPS, I still get anything from 3-5 of these a day starting mid-morning and going on 'til early evening. Callers range from NOP, to Mr sub-continental "We have received a report that your computer isn't working properly" and all stops in-between. Anyway today, some kid says "My name's (Perm any 8 from 10, Dave, George, Steve, . . ocasionally Kallil or Riz) and I'm phoning to see whether you would like to take up a Daily Telegraph subscription. " Well, you can imagine, how my little chest puffed-out with pride. That august institution had consented to contact me to see if I would like to part with some of my ill-gotten early-retiree gains (Huwh !) - I presume for the purposes of intellectual enrichment ! Read-on. I politely explained (unusual for me) that I was only a very occasional buyer of the paper and my main interest would probably from now be centred on the clothing promotions ("Hold the Front page Mage", " Daily Telegraph Trouser Offer is coming down"), rather than the plaguerised Daily Mail editorials and features (Now that the editor is one of the undead ex-DM types) - though I didn't say the last bit. The response came back "What, at only four pounds a week ? " -It's usually at this point during the call that a mental image of Jack Dee's wrinkled frowny face and imitation teenager voice comes into my mind and I have to make a maximum effort not to take the P*ss out of the caller, On this occasion, I restrained myself and explained that for customer profiling purposes I had only bought the paper once in the last fortnight and that my consumption patterns were unlikely to change in forseeable future due to me being an early retiree, limited means, etc etc. "OK sir, I take you off our list". Pleasant enough kid. When I came off the phone, the thought occurred to me, that these people, despite all the aggregated marketing information at their fingertips, haven't got a clue. Otherwise they wouldn't be making the call. £200 for me is 3/4 my Water bill for a year or food for a 2 to 3 weeks. Then I thought, well if supposedly commercial sensitive organisations haven't got a clue about people in my predicament, what chance Government Departments and Mr Osbourne ? Nick

  6. Today is my VRS's first birthday and its sitting sadly only having covered 5984 miles but it has been fantastic all the same 5200 of those miles were done in 4 days lol. Not much to say that hasn't been said before but I can confirm that my mainly cold engine short journeys have given no DPF issues so far and everything has been great remapped at 1515 miles and transformed the car also had its colour coded grill done around same time finishes the car off nicely for me. I have a columbus on the way should be here late next week . My favourite points on the car: 1. Colour Race Blue IMO no other colour says VRS from a distance than race blue and it does suit the car (I am fond of White and Red) 2. Diesel CR engine Had a 1.9 PD in my Furby VRS before couldn't fault it but the CR is a lot more refined and for me better overall. 3. Size ........ need I say any more apart from why would anyone pay more for a equally speced Golf??? 4. Build Quality not the best in the world by any means but for its range and price its superior to many and highly competitive with others. 5. Running Costs, MPG for my longer trips has been 52-56mpg (after remap and still not run in). Road tax in UK reasonable too. 6. Badge, apart from people who know nothing about cars I have had plenty of requests to see/ experience it. 7. Exclusivity, As it is with me in the Netherlands I have only seen one other VRS here and that's someone I know (unlike UK) 8. Briskoda, Simply put the best online forum/community for any car brand I have ever found massive thanks to all who run and pa-troll. 9. VCDS Capabilities, Although I am too tight to pay for a VCDS cable (I am a Skoda owner ffs) It amazes me all that can be played with. 10.Standard seats, I really like them fantastic! Bad points on the car: 1. The stock CR170 power delivery in comparison to a simple stage 1 custom remap. 2. Dealer buying experience, lies and absolutely unacceptable behaviour MOTORLINE SKODA DARTFORD! 3. Chrome Grill Surround, some like it many don't thats fine but should be an option IMO and why the heck not? 4. MFSW/Folding Mirrors, Should be an option for non DSG owners for wheel and VRS model in UK for the mirrors WE WANT IT! 5. Skoda Badges, as much as I like them they are both starting to de-laminate this is common and should have been addressed! Gave it a good clean today dried properly with blower and all perfect again pulled it out of garage and instantly started to rain threw it back in dried again then hail stones booooooo now abandoned in garage. And my 2 fav pics (only a few weeks ago) That is all!

  8. Might as well wack a bigger turbo on too eh? No one will notice, they look kinda the same. I also love th? theory that it makes the car look so much better one second then the next, the insurance dont need to know because it looks the same.

  13. I can see Alan's point - there is an original Mk2, then a facelift, so is there any need to say pre-facelift? Then again, I can see the argument that if you just say you own a Mk2, someone will ask you if it's pre or post facelift Think this might be one for Harry Hill to resolve

  14. I like the badges and lights from the FL... May consider doing it myself, there is nothing wrong with doing something to your car to make it look better in your own opinion, I prefer the rear end on the FL but the front end wins it on the pre-FL for me... best of both worlds But if anyone de-badges there boot lid, you should be put down!

  15. Skoda has more than one revision D equivalent: 1Z0 035 680 A - hardware C3/C4A which is called revision A. Latest official firmware is 1024, unofficial - 2684, modified - 3814 3T0 035 680 - hardware C6/C7, revision B. Latest official firmware is 1404, unofficial - 3984 3T0 035 680 A - hardware C8/C9, revision C. Latest official firmware is 2844, unofficial - 3984 3T0 035 680 B/C/D/E/F - hardware C10/C11, revision D. Different ending letter in the part number specifies the type of map preloaded in the factory (none/West/East). Latest official firmware is 4024. Latest "official" means firmware which is available at the dealar, "unofficial" means firmware which is available in the internet. There are also some 41xx development versions which unofficially support revision B and C units, so we can only hope that VW will release them to the public. Regarding the version information in VCDS - all version info there can be falsified, you can trust only the version information displayed in hidden Testmode menu under Version Info: HW Vehicle: 0xC001, HW Radio: 0003 - revision A HW Vehicle: 0xC201, HW Radio: 0004 - revision B HW Vehicle: 0xC801, HW Radio: 0006 - revision C HW Vehicle: 0xCA01, HW Radio: 0006 - revision D

  17. It's posts like this that make me want to hand the keys right back to Ed Miliband and say there you go, you sort it out. All I'd ask for is the world's biggest box of popcorn. Whatever the coalition does wrong, at least I can think to myself, "Could be worse, might still be the last lot". Even the paucity of talent in the current lot won't be an excuse to bring back the other suspects for a very long time.

  21. On paper yes but the tests are carried out at low speeds with very low rates of acceleration and very light throttle positions. If you are the type of driver who doesnt drive for economy then the bigger diesel may be a better choice. My commute to work is on pretty fast roads and I do sometimes use a 1.6tdi 105 dsg Golf. It does 50-55mpg which is the same as my 2.0CR dsg Passat. Engine maps, tall gearing and stop start can all help to get good figures in the official tests but if you spend you time on fast A roads and motorways and enjoy a spirited driving style then a bit more power and an aerodynamic shape may be a better bet than an economy special. For an extreme example I tried a Fabia Greenline 1.2tdi. Unbelievable economy figures on paper but using it for my current mileage and driving as I do now it couldn't improve on the Passats mpg and felt very underpowered. So it's certainly not a sure bet that a smaller engined less powerfull model will save you masses of money. And what many VAG owners have seen is that older technology was able to give better economy in the real world even though official figures do not agree. Cheers Lee

  22. So which panel air Filter to buy? Green Filter. (taken from PastyBoy's Thread) VS Pipercross Foam (from Jack B's thread) VS OEM paper filter sorry no pics of that :p Of course there is K&N filters, which I've never seen anyone have any problems with and is what I have in my car.

  23. I would say take her out in your car around the lanes and try to explain how a car steers and brakes, ie wheels unloading and loading etc. Does she have her own car yet? try and teach her how that reacts to changes, maybe find a large open space to try and demonstraight understeer and oversteer. Maybe do it over a few weeks, so not to overload. And sorry for your loss.

  32. The way the firmware work are (they are in order of release ignore the no's as a higher no. doesn't necessarily mean a newer firmware) 1004 - Original Firmware 1024 0904 - From here down is A & B Revisions 1104 1164 1204 2664 - Beta Firmware and only B revisions from here 2684 2704 2724 2764 2804 1304 - Same as 2804 but does not support Voice Control 2844 3804 - From here down B & C Revision only - All support for A dropped 3814 3874 3904 3974 3984 4004 - From here down C & D revisions only 4024 Few points to note: 1Z0 035 680 A is original A revision 3Z0 035 680 A is B revision equivalent 3T0 035 680 is C revision equivalent 3T0 035 680 A is C revsion LED Screen equivalent. Skoda don't have an equivalent D Revision yet that i am aware of. Now there are firmwares out there that have been modified to support older devices. For example the is a modified 2764 for A Revisions. However they will be quite buggy when running. Some have no issues and others have loads. I have recently downgraded 3 different peoples units due to running modified firmware creating lag etc with the screen. VCDS Lite should be able to tell you what part no. you have. Always take what VCDS says as, for example, if you upgraded a 1Z0 unit with 0904 firmware or higher it would change the part no. to 3Z0 in the test menu. However within VCDS it would still show as a 1Z0. HTH If you have any other questions give me a shout. I'm not on here much these days as i'm busy with work but i will pop back in every now and then to answer any questions Regards Carl

  35. How anyone can park their VW / Skoda (whatever model) next to an Evoque and then say " that's the worst car ever" and keep a straight face defies belief. Saying it publicly will result in a stoning, and rightfully so. Oh, and I don't mean any funny cigarettes

  37. Nice one I have these fitted too. I found to remove old wipers was to spray WD40 and go have cuppa for 10 min then spring back wiper arm from windscreen as this takes the pressure off the spline and slightly wiggle. They come off easy then

  40. This I agree with! But this makes no sense to me. I can see why the unions will hate this. It would seriously undermine their ability to hold the country to ransom via national strikes if pay settlements are made on a regional level.

  41. Brakes good enough for 230hp......have you got anywhere near 230hp to warrant that quote lol. The brakes imo are one of the worst things on this car. The brakes on the RS200 are nothing short of fantastic. As for rinsing the clio on teack when modifiedid say that's latgely dependant on what track and how twisty it is. Remove the remap from the vRS and even with the susoension work id still betonthe clio pipping it
