  1. Yes they do have the same basic design...but as you say bore & stroke are different also the oil circuit & pump is different on the 1.4lts...& various other things.. P.S. the 140PS & the 150PS got both camshafts as variable.. The 6speed manual MQ250 will take quite a bit more torque than 250Nm...its fitted to the 1.8lt petrol engines & in USA that also includes the MK7 Golf AWD "4-Motion sportwagen" (estate). Plenty on the MK7 Golf forums have tuned this car to make a cheap "R" as they don't get the "R" estate in USA. BUT the clutch goes...then when the clutch is upgraded, then the standard open diff goes...then finally its the gearbox which shreds the syncro's... Some are doing a MQ350 gearbox swap to start with now! Its a case of how much time/money you want throw at the "problem"...
  2. I know the differences..I have the VAG workshop books..& the self study guides & various other in depth write ups on the EA211 engines...amongst other things!... Skoda fitting the 125PS is a waste...why not fit the 140/150PS version 1.4lt EA211 as its virtually the same weight!..All down to marketing & the VAG group "hierarchy"..
  3. The EA211 engines are mapped in the UK for 95/91RON......so basically "de-tuned" I've never seen 91RON in UK...so I got mine remapped to stage "1-B" which is stage1 but also to 98/95RON as per the GTI/R & removed my 95/91RON sticker & fitted the VW 98/95RON sticker. The higher the octane rating the earlier (advanced) you need to fire the spark plugs... Most maps just increase the turbo boost (by keeping the wastegate actuator closed for longer)...The Revo one I have also alters (advances) the spark plug timing, & also removes the factory limit (alters the settings) which strangles the fuel pump...well thats what I can find out from them..
  4. MQ200 & MQ250 are both fitted to the bigger MK3 Octavia & MK7 Golf..... The torque rating designation number is a rough "safe" limit with the car fully loaded & driving up a steep slope....basically worst case scenario that VAG reckon it can cope with.
  5. I rebuilt all the calipers on my old 1.4 16v AUB which had rear discs....Got the seal kits from the dealers parts dept., did the work myself...& yes crap /rust builds up there but sounds like yours is long overdue the rebuild!!

  8. A day ago I saw it on the web & masses of photos...Tebay services, a Waitrose down south & another place...one queue had 40ish cars & about 2 1/2hrs long.. Looks like Australia had similar problems also:- Tesla owners forced to wait 90 minutes for charge in Wodonga | news.com.au — Australia’s leading news site I'll stick to my efficient & very clean burning petrol engine...longest I've ever had to queue in this country for petrol is 15mins..... Anyway electric cars will eventually get cheaper when they ditch expensive lithium batteries & use sodium batteries...

  12. I did a big thread (all info in first post) on swapping out the mid sized battery for a bigger case size...all info on case sizes & VCDS coding etc in this thread here:- How to retro-fit a bigger capacity battery to a Mk7 Golf | GOLFMK7 - VW GTI MKVII Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVII Forum Quotes:- If the car has "stop/start" auto engine shutoff & restart (not to be confused with KESSY which is keyless entry & start).....you need at least an EFB type & pefferably an AGM type. This is what VAG fit at the factory:- For cars WITH "Start/Stop” eco engine shut off (BlueMotion II):- 59Ah/320A (DIN), H5 size, EFB type 69Ah/360A (DIN), H6 size, EFB type 68Ah/380A (DIN), H6 size, AGM type H5 is the mid sized case, H6 is the biggest case size. Varta who make some of the batteries for VAG confirmed that standard battery case sizes are used to make the VW factory batteries, but that the Ah capacities are “special” to VW for those case sizes. Basically, VW are confusing us to make sure we end up buying a direct replacement battery from them when in fact a standard battery which is available from any auto parts supplier will fit & do the job!! So long as the case size is the same or bigger than your factory battery & the Ah/CCA is better then buy what every you can from any car parts supplier... VCDS coding required From the Main screen:- Select Control Module [Select] [19-CAN Gateway] Advanced Functions screen:- [Adaptions-10] New value choice screen:- Change the following four channels, inputting the relevant data about the new battery. IDE03256-MAS06105-Battery adaptation-Rated battery capacity IDE03256-MAS06106-Battery adaptation-Battery technology IDE03256-MAS06107-Battery adaptation-Battery manufacturer IDE03256-MAS06108-Battery adaptation-Battery Serial Number When you click on "Battery technology" (using VCDS 21.3.0) a drop down list appears with the following options (= actual meaning):- Wet = Standard Lead Acid Fleece = Standard A.G.M. Wickel6V Wickel12V Ultracap Gel = Standard Gel Lead Acid Lithium ions = Standard LiFePO4 EFB = Standard E.F.B. Binary - AGM = "Bipolar" A.G.M. type EFB+ = E.F.B. "Plus" type Not_assigned_10 Not_assigned_11 Not_assigned_12 Not_assigned_13 Not_assigned_14 Unknown According to various sources of information, including numerous car scans & threads on Ross-Tech, "Fleece" is for standard AGM batteries, "EFB" is for standard EFB batteries, & "Wet" is for standard lead acid batteries, as these settings are used at the factory. The setting of "Binary - AGM" is apparently for specialist "Bipolar AGM" batteries! Also the drop down list is from VCDS & not generated by your car's BCM, therefore, your car may not support all the options on the list, & the BCM will reject the value when you tell it to accept it! Battery BEM codes are now redundant with the above separate channels. The most important channels are:- Rated battery capacity, Battery technology, & Battery Serial Number. For the Battery Serial Number, just change one digit of the old one. This channel tells the BCM that a new battery has been installed & to relearn the new battery & forget any “learnt values” for the old battery!
  13. What kills most cars going through Rufford ford is the bow wave getting into the air intake......engines don't like it... The MQB platform cars have the air filter box sealed/piped to the slam panel which is the air intake...& basically the gap between the underside of the leading edge of the bonnet & the top of the grille... Most engine models have a water drain point with a one way flap to let water out, but not allow air in...this at the lowest point in the pipework between the air filter & the slam panel..
  14. I'll have to update the laptop as that has the VCDS on it & I only use it for that!....

  17. TRW stuff is cheap I bought two of the 25g tubes at under £6/tube...still on the first tube & I've done 4 calipers..!!...you don't need much...well there isn't room for much anyway! The silicon stuff which will cause problems is just as expensive...then the double expense of new pads/discs as it eventually causes the caliper to stick due to it not being 100% compatible with the rubber/plastic bush...
  18. Most of the MQB platform..including your cars brakes have two pins on each caliper..& under the rubber bellows..one pin has a plastic/rubber bush on it..this makes the fit very tight..the other pin without the bush allows for "tolerance" due to various factors.....& thus the bush absorbs the grease if the wrong grease is used..& thus the pin sticks & then the caliper sticks!!....Wrote off a new set of pads/discs that way!!!...So yeah feck Ceretec type greases!! Also I don't use copper grease or Ceretec on the pad backs/pad ears......they all calcify & fail or wash out too easily.....I only use Loctite LB8009 heavy duty....high temp, graphite grease, won't wash out, won't calcify, safe on stainless steel etc... Loctite LB 8009 - Google Shopping
  19. Might also need to fit the handbrake "helper" springs to the lever arm on the back of the caliper...Can't remember which ones I used I think the choice was Passat or T2 van springs...
  20. Ceratec & other greases are absorbed by the plastic/rubber "bush".....been there done that.. Only use the caliper manufactures (TRW) grease on the slide pins which is PFG110 trw pfg110 grease - Google Search
  21. Correct...if you have the 57mm piston calipers...just new 312mm brackets required to place the caliper further out...(besides new discs...you could reuse your old pads but its best if fitting new discs to fit new pads).. I've had the ATE Power groove previously on this car as it was the first set I had when I did the conversion from 288mm to 312mm......... both sets as you post above are made to similar high tolerances & quality...but so far the anti-corrosion coating on the non-swept areas is holding up far better on the Brembo Max discs than the ATEs did for the same period of time...& we get it tough up here in Scotland...grit central, plus sand/sea air where I am!! TBH get what ever you can find easy & cheaply....both are very good.....but get the plain pads & not the ceramics/low dust as they (both companies) state those are for plain discs as otherwise they squeal like mad with grooved discs. In fact if you want the best design of groove you actually want a "J" hook......but those are custom done ...

  23. "****".....edited, ........forgot that your cars have slightly different rear caliper slide pins due to being manual handbrakes & not electronic...
  24. Don't fit the very heavy single 60mm piston sliding fist MQB platform calipers.....waste of money.... On the MK3 Octavia & MK7/7.5 Golf is way better to fit either the Audi TT-S 4 pot ATE caliper with the 340mm discs...or you fit the Porsche Macan Brembo 4pot calipers, which require the older MK6 Golf 345mm discs.....both the above options are way lighter than the factory 60mm piston calipers.. Loads of people have done these mods on the MQB platform... Audi TTS front caliper option! | GOLFMK7 - VW GTI MKVII Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVII Forum Consolidated Macan Brembo upgrade thread (READ FIRST POST) | GOLFMK7 - VW GTI MKVII Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVII Forum I don't know the exacts for the MK4 Octavia, but its a lightly modified MQB platform... Anyway loads of options here as complete kits..you can just by calipers & fit your own discs/pads.. Skoda Octavia Big Brake Kits (killerbrakes.com)
  25. Most of the braking in a car is done by the front discs....rears do very little.....Its not as if they are going up to the 365mm Audi RS discs with 8 pot Brembos from the MQB platform which will fit the MK3 Octavia.. As for increasing the unsprung weight....for the exact same size & type discs different brands quote different weights.....so choose your brand carefully.. Anyway the disc is close to the hub so any increase in weight & rotational mass is not a huge cause for concern.. The factory alloy wheels on the other hand are too heavy...I shed 2kg per wheel (rim & tyre) by swapping from the cheap factory gravity cast alloys to a lighter & same minimum strength "low pressure cast" alloy....in both cases alloys & tyres are the same sizes, etc.. As the "wheel" weight is further away from the hub its better to reduce this weight & rotational mass..
