Crankshaft pulley bolt torque setting
I did the cambelt on my 1.4/16V BBY engine Polo recently. Getting the old bolt out was nearly a showstopper. It was the recessed head type, changed by VW 10 years ago when they did belt and WP. 1 meter long 3/4" breaker bar on the bolt, that long counterhold tool being held by a biggish pal, and I was just bouncing up and down with no progress. Luckily another pal who'd experienced the same snag suggested heat (which of course lengthens the bolt and so reduces the tension in it). Made all the difference without going mad on the temperature, since there are plastics nearby.

Blower motor ok, resistor pack ok, fuse ok, but no power to blower
No problem. The relay on that car is in position 5 of the "relay holder below the onboard power supply control unit". It feeds the blower motor switch via fuse 40, the rear wiper via fuse 41, and goes to the light switch via fuse 49 (presumably to switch off headlights briefly if on when cranking starts, or suchlike). The fact the rear wiper is still working suggests that the relay isn't completely dead, but the contacts may be degraded to the point that it struggles to allow enough current to spin up the blower motor from a standstill. I believe the part number of this relay is 4H0 951 253, and it probably has 100 or 644 written on the top of it.

Blower motor ok, resistor pack ok, fuse ok, but no power to blower
Oh, OK. There is a relay that feeds fuse 40 and a few others including rear wiper. It's the load reduction relay used during cranking, to minimise non-essential current usage. Would need to know more car details to look up exactly where to find it. VIN, or just exact build date if you know it.

Does the car have a rear wiper? If so, is that also not working?

DIFFICULT TO FILL WITH OIL
Yes, normal. May be easier to use a litre jug refilled a few times rather than trying to pour directly from 5L container.

Audible warning chime!!!
Think you missed my point. The 4°C warning in our 05 Fabia is very loud and nasty, but the indicator ticking noise is only just loud enough. Anything you do to reduce the volume of the chime is probably going to reduce the volume of the indicator ticking too.

I'd say there's a good chance your son is right.

Audible warning chime!!!
Really glad that neither my Polo nor A4 feature that 'orrible 4°C thing.

Audible warning chime!!!
The sound is made by a piezo tweeter on the instrument cluster board. You could cover the hole in the top of that with some duct tape which ought to quieten it; but the trouble is that it also makes the indicator ticking noise. Personally, as an old git, I could do with that being a bit louder.

No, the links I gave were from LLL parts, which gives very similar info, but isn't VIN filterable. Only the screenshot is partslink.

partlink24.com Very handy, but very not free.

Doesn't appear to be any mechanism for adjustment under that version.

I've always thought/found that ETKA uses UK; DD.MM.YYYY, I think?- Part identification required please
Odd, 'cos in that case it should be this diagram and part numbers that applies, but it looks totally different: Car Parts Catalog - LLLParts If you share VIN or reg I can look up properly.- Part identification required please
Car Parts Catalog - LLLParts item 3, and possibly 2 if it's distorted, I think. Do you know when the car was built? There's a different arrangement before 06/10/14 apparently, but the image for that one looks different to yours.- 2008 16v fabia starter motor OEM number
Your car was fitted with a 1.0kW Bosch starter, part number 02T911023R.- Parts diagrams by VIN
partslink24.com does it, but not for free. Various short-term subscriptions are available though; £13.20 for 1 day is currently the cheapest option for UK. The parts lists are the same as via the various free ETKA clones, but more up to date. Includes RRP. VIN entry causes the relevant parts for that VIN to appear in normal black font with all the other ones greyed out. Another possibly handy service I've just noticed that they offer is a full list (csv file) of all the parts for a given VIN. Currently offered for £15 for 5 VINs-worth. Appears under the heading "Additional fee-based services" on their subscriptions page and is called "Parts data Lists".- Brake size and suggestions
If the calipers have a wire retaining clip visible on the outward facing side you have 288mm discs, otherwise 256mm.- Lights on fash stay on very dim, indicator not clicking, horn not working
Indicator noise and light left on chime are both made by a piezo tweeter on the instrument cluster circuit board. The fact that you are also seeing some strange warning light behaviours makes me think that all is not well with your instrument cluster. I would remove and examine it for moisture presence, or corrosion, or any other obvious damage. Horn is via a (soldered in) relay in the onboard supply control unit (often called BCM in later models). Has the steering wheel been off for any reason recently? Might be an input problem rather than relay or the horn itself.- 2008 16v fabia starter motor OEM number
Manual gearbox or auto? With reg number or VIN I could look it up most easily. - Part identification required please
