The Avenger being the rarest of the bunch I think.

Because they rotted. My big sister had one as her first car.

Saw an allegro "SPORT" - still sh**e, going towards kidderminster from bromsgrove last week.

A mate had An Allegro Sport Special. One of the early ones with the 'square' steering wheel. It was a 1750- fast in a straight line, but cornering was terrible. We still managed to win a few traffic light grand prix in it..

Actually the Atoz may have been unique from a transmission aspect, it was available as a semi auto - no sequential fore & aft shift change and certainly no flappy paddles. It was clutch pedal less but with the normal manual type H pattern shift - plus there was no full auto mode. Cannot think of another semi auto like that?

The VW beetle had a 3-position shifter, (Low, neutral, high) with a torque converter semi-auto. Alfa's Selespeed (sillyspeed) is a conventional gate with auto clutch, I believe.

That is immaculate and must be boody rare. I remember a neighbour having an Orion Ghia X or something, basically a four door XR3i and it shifted very nicely. I actually like this:D

More I miss: Renault Fuego, Montego and Maesto (when did you last see one), Nissan Silvia 1.8 GT Turbo, Nissan Laurel, Opel Manta etc could go on and on!!!

You just did !! :P:D;)

Matra Simca Bagherra. Sexy little French number when I was young :)

Chrysler Avenger Tiger - grrrrrrrrrrrrr !!!

Yep , that looks to be in first class condition - an excellent bit of motoring history.

A family friend bought a mk2 or is it the 3? Escort (like the white one pictured) as a temp car.

Was in quite good nick and had a choke. I drove it in the snow and found it to be quite errrrr interesting

A few, back in the 1970s, and I think the 2-smokes were Wartburgs, not Moskvichs.

Yes, Moskvich never made two-strokes. When they were imported back in the early 1970's, they had a chain driven OHC 1500ccc engine. I had a drive in one back then and the mechanical bits weren't too bad and it had reasonable performance and a positive gearchange. However, some of the trim and finish was quite crude. The brakes were drums all round and were over servoed and it was very easy to lock the wheels. I remember it had lots of dials for oil pressure, etc, but it was difficult to understand them as their functions were in Russian!

There was either a van or a pickup around Brecon until the mid-1980's, but that's the last one I saw in the UK. However, there are still a few going in Eastern Europe.

This one was outside the in-law's flat in Klaipeda, Lithuania.

This one was seen in the car park at the shopping centre in the same town. It looks like a Moskvitch hatchback, but I've never seen one of these before.

This one is again in Klaipeda and is in the corner of a used car lot. It has not been road registered since independence in 1990 as it still has the USSR number plates (Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union until it gained independence).

Ah the joys of a manual choke on a cold morning: my first car a FIAT Uno 45 Fire had one:DLove the mark 2 Cav.My dad had an SRi 130 as a company car and it went like the proverbial cat...

Fiat Mirafiori's AKA 131, my dad had one, wasn't a sport though :(

Yeah! Always wanted my dad to get one of these! He loved the drive, just said the body "felt a bit thin!"

Anyway I had a 128 3P like this, for a very short while!!

Fiat 128 Coupe Sport/128 3P - Motorbase

Yes, I had one of those as well. Like all Fiats of that era (and many other makes as well, to be fair), it suffered badly from the old tin worm. It was only about 5 years old when the passenger wiper suddenly went erratic and it was because the panel it was bolted to had rotten away! I crudely patched it up with a piece of metal bolted over the rusted section so that the car could be used.

When it was 3 years old before any rust took a serious hold, I took it across Europe to Italy and back with no problems. In the end, a mechanic from the Fiat garage bought it off me when it was six years old.

My dad went from the Mirafiori to a Datsun Stanza to the old wedge shaped Rover 218, they all ended up being riddled. The Rover especially, the rust on the pillars was the only thing holding the roof down :D

Oh, and Fiat X-19's, dont see many of those now either.

Or 127s come to that.Would love a late 70s 127 1050 Sport: remember they used to rev forever. The most criminal loss is of all the Alfa Suds: what a lovely noise;)

Having trouble copying and pasting images on here but for the Eastern European car fan check out two great books on Amazon:

Cars of the Soviet Union

Cars for Comrades.

Got both but can't remember authors of the top of my head:thumbup:

  • 2 weeks later...

Datsun 240z Samuri (no spelling mistake; the mis-spelling was to get around a copyright). Looked about standard, but was running 3xDCOEs, and a 6-2-1 manifold.

I used to have one of those – horrible car

Quite like the Lotus Sunbeam though :)

Anyway, there's a forgotten 80s classic that no one's mentioned yet, and there's one at the top of our street…
