thanks. the grad mark is in fact the shadow cast by the bridge I was standing on!   :D  Those are the colours as they were, I only added some saturation to the sky to bring out the blue. When I adjusted the saturation for the rest of the image it looked bonkers!

Not a lot I could do about the bridge shadow as these were grabbed from the road side as I was driving down the A9 from Inverness

Ah that explains it - was wondering why you would have had a grad on it. Never even thought about shadow.

I guess with the saturation I just forgot quite how vivid the colours can be in the forests at this time of year.

Going to Iceland on Friday, hoping for some great photo opportunities. Currently scratching my head trying to figure out how to cram a D800, 24-120mm f4, 14mm 2.8 and a tripod into my cabin baggage whilst still having room for some clothes!  :D

Impossible I think unless they relax the limits - I could manage the camera, lenses and clothes (Lowepro Rover AW II) but the tripod would be a problem unless I could carry on another bag (or leave the tripod attached to the front which I doubt the staff would allow).

Actually I've realised it's ok! We're going by Easyjet and I've paid for "upfront" seats which qualify for an extra small bag each. My Lowepro Photo Hatchback 16l fits the bill nicely, even if it is a bit of a squeeze to fit the gear in the camera compartment [tripod going in the overhead bag].

Glad you got a solution.

What I normally end up doing is packing the tripod in my check in luggage and carrying on the camera bag but sounds like you are going with no luggage.

Sadly the aurora didn't make an appearance [except for a tiny patch of green in a couple of shots], but I absolutely loved our brief trip to Iceland. Friendly people, stunning scenery and good food made for a great trip. I'll certainly be going back at some point with a more photographic focus [excuse the pun!]. Here's some shots from our trip:
