Handbook limit is 0.5 litre of oil per 1000 km (=621 miles). That would be 14.5 litres maximum for 18,000 miles so you could be OK.

However, mine got much worse after 9,000 miles so you need to work out you current consumption over a shorter period.

seems mine is not as bad as others, with my old fiest st i never put extra oil into it in the 4 years i had it.

Still love the car though, it the most fun car to drive i have had

I can understand it using a bit more with two chargers but not as much as some!

thats the trouble with this car, because it drives so good we 'put up' with the excessive oil usage, had it been any other type of car would you put up with 6/7/8/9 ltrs of oil usage in 10/15/20k miles?

i know i wouldnt even if it said 0.5 ltrs per 1000km in the handbook

i remember my old mk3 escort which needed valve stem oil seals replaced that didnt burn as much oil

I'm still enjoying the car but the oil usage is getting to me. Original plan was to see how it was for 3 years then decide on 5 years but now I'm not so sure. I've yet to use a tank of fuel yet since I last checked and I'm checking every tankful I do.

I'm not putting up with oil usage.... but if I had some of the problems you guys have had, I'd be getting rid. (still havent checked mine since the nurburgring in sept last year! 5000 miles ago )

I may think twice about another twin charger engine, OR buy one I know is good....

Until I next check how much it's using by the time I finish this tank of fuel I won't know exactly how much it's using. I want it to be a fair test on how I drive day to day and not to go and burn off another half a tank to do it.

There's no need to panic yet as it's under warranty for now so if it goes wrong it's up to Skoda to sort it. But if it does come to the point where I get fed up and I have to sell then there's a good chance I'm going sensible with my next purchase. Due to thinking too much about things lately it seems that a house has to be my next priority. Realistically I should have bought a house before the car and could have done by now. I'd split what money I'd get from selling the car, half would go towards the deposit then the other half would go on a car.

The difference between full and short was explained in thread ealier short means they ise your turbo etc and change engine block

Usually/historically buying a 'short engine' gets you a Block, liners, crank, bearings, pistons with rings etc all built up.

no head/heads or other parts, starter motor, alternator etc.

No idea what VAG send through these days.

Complete unit Block & Head possibly,

then with others, a Crated Complete engine unit.

My engine was Rebuilt before i bought it, not replaced with a 'Short Engine', and is good.

The Twin Charger is at present pretty much a unique petrol engine in its small capacity & performance.

Twin Turbos a plenty in bigger capacity and Ford, Fiat and others are bringing in Small capacity

Twin Turbos or Turbo and Supercharge,

but only time will tell how they go once enough of them in use.

I tried, by using the DVLA figures to check how many Twin Chargers are Taxed in the UK.

vRS, Polo GTi, Seat 178 bhp & Audi 185 ps.

Roughly it looks like under 6000 Twin Chargers registered in the UK since 2009.

(If that figure is way out, someone can maybe say the correct numbers)

I thought I read the twincharger capacity was 25 (or 75?),000 engines p.a. and they were at capacity?

I never bothered with them because really it was the 178 & 182 bhp 1390cc with DSG that i was thinking of.

?Are those other engines having similar problems to the Twin Charger in the vRS?

No idea - but they are also available with DSG (my Scirocco was) although as an option - and I think are the 160/170PS versions. With the Scirocco, it was a misfire issue that plagued them. Turns out it was firstly injectors (dodgy batch for early 2010 builds mainly), then incorrect spark plugs fitted by VW at service time (my issue). VAG parts system showed the wrong plugs to be fitted. Fit plugs from the 160PS Passat or Tiguan (I think EOS as well) and all was fine. Cost them a half engine rebuild (lost one cylinder and a couple of valves) plus a load of other stuff fitted through wrong diagnosis.

I think I may have even done my own thread for all this, but as this is the furthest thread to the top I thought I'd give an update.

My car was using a lot of oil, over 8 litres in less than 5k miles.

I had a lot of oil tests, lots of checks, and the replacement breather pipe. Eventually, it got to a point when we were going to replace the engine, and the garage tried one last set of checks on all the breathers etc.

Since that date, I've covered nearly 2500 miles and used barely 1l of oil. Happiness has returned !

I've barely checked mine in 2.5k miles... No lights, running the best it ever has...

And no oil usage
