My old man had that on vinyl. Bought new when it was released. He had shed loads of vinyl. Had loads transferred to CD and gave (yes GAVE) the vinyl away. I was so f'kin angry with him about that as I would have liked a lot for myself.

Ouch! My Mum was the same with her cassettes, some rare stuff too!

I still have my vinyl albums (I never bought 45's). Not a huge collection but I do have a few valuable-ish picture disks. However, I do regret getting rid of my old separates stacked Hi-Fi system. My wife has a bunch of 45's up in our loft & some cassettes as well if I remember correctly. We'll come across these in a week or so when we clear out the loft before we add  top up insulation & a raised store floor. I will be doing the work & hope my knees hold out.

I took loads of 70's and 80's cassettes to the dump only last week, boy did it hurt but you can't keep every bit of tat during a house move, I figured the vinyl albums that have already come over with me would be more sought after one day.

I also took enough motorsport trophies from a previous life to fill several display cases, that really hurt but they no longer give me the pride that they once did.

Wow you were ruthless. I have loads of motor magazines & football programs but I can't bring myself to get rid of them - yet. When the time comes I might sell some of the sought after football programs (one is probably worth around £300+) or give them away to anyone who may be interested.

I tried selling several years worth of the subscriber edition of Evo when I moved in 2017, but nobody was even remotely interested so they had to go to the dump in Hedge End.

Mine are Hot Car magazines. Must be 50+ some of which date back to the late 60's / early 70's. Pretty sure I have the one that featured the guy (John Dodd) that stuffed a 27litre Spitfire Merlin engine into a Rolls Royce. It looks like the magazines go for around £1-£2 a copy on Ebay. Not bad since they only cost 30-40p when new☺️

Hell I would buy them just to read and reminisce, and probably laugh my at then young self in those times!

I am getting through a pile of Aircraft magazines from the 1930's through to the 1950's, they are a fascinating time capsule and to be able to see the evolution of the industry from bi-planes to supersonic fighter jets and turbofan passenger jets like the Comet in such a short period of time is inspiring.

looking through the job ads made me realise I was born 20 years too late for the career that my parents wisely (at the time) pushed me towards, a design draughtsman and specifically a jig & tool designer, in the 50's I could have had my pick of jobs from the best aircraft companies the world over.

The other shock was seeing just how much was then "Made in Britain" in places that you would now never associate with manufacturing.

The world was certainly different back then. Much simpler by today's standards. No internet, mobile phones or even pagers at that time & you're right, Britain made a lot more stuff back then. You mentioned the Comet. I flew in one of them to Spain on a holiday in the mid 60's. It was the first time I had ever been on an aircraft of any type. By then they had changed the windows from square to rounded. Apparently metal fatigue at the corners of the square windows had caused a few of the earlier planes to crash. Which is why all planes now have rounded side windows.

I did a mechanical engineering apprenticeship at General Motors UK (where my dad worked) & I landed up in their Frigidaire division which in turn got me into the AC business. I then spent 45 years in the HVAC&R industry in a variety of sales & management roles with a few different companies until I retired 2 years ago.

Now I have the time I might follow your lead & dig those mags out & take a trip down memory lane.

'Everything'!!

I recently bought a 'Bluesound Node' streamy thingy and found Radio Paradise. It has 4 streams of music, all of which are offered in MQA as well as CD quality. The MQA thing is relatively new and is claimed to be the original 'Master', sent direct and lossless. The tracks are a bit 'middle of the road' and I doubt they would offend anyone, but the quality of the music is astonishing. I've heard things in tracks I haven't heard before and although its easy to be sucked into the HiFI thing rather than listening to the music, it is a great way to wind down after a busy day...or as in my case, a day wasted listening to music :D I've certainly made my poweramps get a bit warm, but at least the neighbours and their constantly barking dog get to enjoy the music too :D

Bluesound Node

Interesting.  I've been listening to RP for years.  Mostly these days it's via the app on my Sony Android TV into my AV amp and speakers.  However, I've also got the app on a couple of Macs and on my iPhone.  I download large amounts of the playlist into the cache and then play it offline in the car.

At home it's FLAC and in the car it's at RP's High Resolution.  However, all of this is either via Ethernet or USB.  I'm pretty averse to wireless of any kind since I discovered I have an odd EMF sensitivity.  Did you buy the Node or the Powernode?  It looks like both of them have Ethernet inputs.  I'd be interested in a Node to link into my main system if there's a way to control it other than wifi.

RP itself is very good and Bill Goldsmith who runs it with his wife Rebecca is one of life's good guys.  Whenever I've e-mailed him about anything, either technical or music related he's got back to me pretty much immediately.

The photographs that go along with the music streams on the apps are pretty cool as well.   Here's RP's take on Hogwarts Sorting Hat. 😄

Unusual speaker array ^^^ I just have the node as I don't need the amp (Powernode). I've got a bit of an amp surplus at the moment :D (can you ever have too many amps? ), so trying to work out how to configure 4 floorstanders, 4 bookshelf and a centre speaker into something useful :D :D

One of the benifit/problems (delete as appropriate) of a lifetime working in audio. Some people have multiple sheds, I seem to have a bit too much hifi. Luckily I have a friend who takes them off me for a few quid and a nice meal :)

Like Topsy.  The speaker array just growed.   For quite some time, the Monitor Audio floor standers weren't there.  They're actually my son's and are on extended loan to improve the sound stage.  I might need to buy a pair of Triangle floor standers when he eventually reclaims them.

The Triangle bookshelf speakers are actually connected to the Atmos channels at the moment.   I know they're not in quite the correct orientation but the whole effect is quite good.   There's a KEF sub behind the TV and a pair of Mission Elan e30 for the rears.

The room is 26' x 14' with a large window at each end and doesn't lend itself to an AV system terribly well.

You're well on the way to a 7.2 speaker system but then you know that.   If you need to dispose of any vintage British hifi, I have a friend who's currently living in Finland. who specialises in repairing and reselling it,

I was wondering what the floorstanders were. Are they MA Bronze (BX5). I like the front port as it can often mean you can place the speaker closer to the walls without bass excess or weirdness. I think I've given my 'vintage' hifi away (or sold it) although my Epos M22s and M5s must be getting on for 20 year old. I've just put new tweeters into the M22 and they still sound pretty good. Could probably do with a new crossover, as I suspect the existing ones will be a bit tired by now. I've got enough speakers to make a 7.1.2 system I guess, but not sure how I would mount the M5s as height speakers? At least not without the potential of a nasty head related accident sometime in the future :D

Wish I had kept my old Leak Delta 30, it had real wood in it :D

Yes, they're the MA Bronze.  They do have rear ports as well and I've plugged those for exactly the reason you cite.   I was thinking more of a front / mid / rear pairing + a sub for 7.2 if you have an AV amp that will drive that configuration.

Having said that, by far and away the best sounding system I've heard recently, apart from in a Hifi dealership with speakers at £30k a pair, was a friend's simple stereo system of Electrocompaniet ECM1 MKII streamer, Sugden A21a series II amp and Living Voice Avatar OBX2R speakers.

Absolutely stunning sound quality and all for a mere £8k or so....🤔

I better make this the last post on the subject as it's a bit OT, but my receiver can do 9.2 as an amp or 7.2.4 if you can power amp two of the channels (it only has 9 internal amplifiers but can decode for more). I use, mostly, the pre-outs from the receiver and run them through poweramps. A big ass amp takes care of the front pair which can dip down to 3.2Ω and luckily the amp laughs at this (it weighs nearly 20kg)  :) I like heavy hifi. My front speakers are around 30kg a piece if I recall correctly. Very heavy to move and they have to be vacuumed around as I can't move them owing to the base being spiked.

Meanwhile, I'm listening to Shooglenifty.   I've got a few of their albums from the days when you needed hardware.  A friend brought the CD round last night and I ripped it into what was iTunes....

Probably my favourite guitarist, never seems to get the credit he deserves. Have a look for some of the later live versions. 👍

I've got a bit of Queen going on. Greatest Hits 2 (the 80's stuff).
