Right, work is done .... FARB has gone on, my tame mechanic says it was an absolute pain, he had to drop the front subframe, and disconnect the steering rack, but its all on now ploy bushes and all :)

polybushes in!

The standard ARB was surprisingly puny by comparison!

my pads were well and truly "used!lol"

and sadly the yellowstuff pads awesome sold me were the wrong ones :( so cheap pattern parts had to go in :(  (i'll let you know how it turns out, hopefully there will be some good customer service, but I'm going to have to pay again to fit more pads before the track season starts :( )

says this on the box, sincerely hope its not true!

first impressions?! I have only done about 10 miles, but the car feels surprisingly different! Oddly it seems to ride a lot better, the front is definatley  "tighter" with less roll.... feels good! very controlled.... quite different...

I guess the test will be the next track day! I review again after a few hundred miles on the road, then again after castle coomb spring action day :)

the plot thickens... seems awesome did send the right pads, as they have the right part number printed on them! :o but they definatley won't fit....... yet the pads that came out that are different, were also the same part number.... (that I have recomended to others on the site, and they have fitted them!) the new pads even have the right number printed on them, but, they are wrong....... the patter cheap (£18) pads i have put on, are the right bloody shape! :(

anyway, awesome are onto it for me!

right these pads are DP41479R and are listed as correct for my car on the larkspeed website.....

I looked at the pics at the begining of this thread, and found the ones I used are DP 41517R (suitable for cars with ATE calipers) ... listed for many cars, seat leon, skoda yeti ect .......

Unlucky Dave, I'm pretty sure our cars have the ATE callipers. I do remember ordering the DP 41517R for my car when I was planning to upgrade my standard pads for my 288mm brakes but then found cheap 312mm and mamanged to change my order. Still went with the EBC Yellow Stuff ones :)

I hope you get this sorted and finally the right pads will be fitted to your awesome Estate !!

Might take a couple of weeks for the bushes to settle in. Shame about the pads but good job you changed them!

Thanks Matty :) yes they are ATE calipers, but it seems EBC have the vRS listed as something else! the code was right, and the pads were right for the code...... BUT awesome are onto it, and getting me the right ones ! :) the cheapy £18 pads feel fine on the road, but I wont take 'em on the track, I'll change them again when awesome send me the right ones...

lol.... yeah, for the sake of £18 I thought it would be safer to have cheap pads than metal against metal! lol....

I love the heat damage shown on this pic, quite proud how well they have been abused! lol...

IMG_2418.jpg

I am proud of you Dave, you managed to run your pads to complete extinction :)

I think my rotors are gone, at least the left front one is howling like a banshee :(

Perhaps I look into 312 discs etc...

When I was buying Brembo pads I had the same problem with part numbers. Brembo had it mixed up themselves and were giving two different part numbers in two different paces on their website

  • Author

I just changed the discs too.... they were a bit cut due to the metal on metal... not really worn down after 34k.... they were still thick enough, but I had a spare set of discs anyway, and the standard sizes are really cheap , and my tame mech says no more labour for the discs as it takes about an extra 20 seconds to change them ! lol...

I'm sure awesome will get me the right pads :) (before castle coombe!lol)

Aren't they the pads for the mk1 fab vrs Lucas calipers? If they wont replace then flog em into the mk1 section maybe?

  • Author

Im sure they will sort it out, I seem to be getting good customer service from them :)

I have a problem though, my steering wheel is now no longer straight in a straight line! its off center! arrrghhhh... do I have to go get laser alignment now? :(

Could be the subframe or the rack are in a slightly different position when they were bolted back on, there's a few mm of play around each of the bolts so easy to do.

Get the alignment done or it would just be guess work messing around with the positioning of the subframe trying to get it back exactly where it was.

  • Author

Thanks for that, I thought I would need alignment, I remember when they remove track rod ends, if they dont get exactly the right number of turns on as off it messes it up :(

Agreed, get it on a Hunter machine and make sure they do it right. Common mistake in such situations ( steering wheel needs to be turned ever so slightly to go straight - I had this as well on mine) is to let the machine tell the operative when the steering wheel is straight - wrong. Steering wheel has to be set by the operator straight and locked first before alignment machine is turned on, only in this way they can get it right.

What they did at first on my car was they fired up the Hunter alignment rig, set up the sensors and they were turning the steering wheel untill machine told them the steering wheel was "straight" or neutral - that is wrong. They have to set it straight/neutral and lock it before they fire up Hunter rig and then tell it the steering wheel is right, Only this way they will be able to set it up correctly. Do not let them tell you they do it day in day out and they are the experts if they insist on doing the alignment any other way. I gullible enough to trust the specialist and had to go back and waste lots of time to get it done correctly, the way I told them it should be done lol!

Looks like you have been sent the standard Fabia size pads. Happened to me once before with the Remsa pads I ordered. Best to ask for Audi A3/VW Golf V/ Touran/Caddy/ Seat Altea/Toledo/Skoda Octavia Pads I think it was last time....hahahaha

P.S.  Double checked the brake pad box in my garage and DP41517R like you ordered was correct.

been talking to a a teccie, and it seems my subframe will have moved a bit.... gonna try the garage it was done at first (local "special" place! lol... but no 4WA machine!) and spoke to a laser 4WA garage that said they could fix it. I'll get it all sorted :)

mmm EBC swear they sent the right ones, but they were DP415179R, where the ones I took out were DP41517R ... seems EBC have the car listed wrong, as I need the seat leon ones like you said... the ones for ATE calipers!

Best send them a photo of the old and the new pads. That's what I did for the Remsa Pads and got a post pack with the correct ones 2 days later. Next time when I ordered the EBC's I used the same photo in store and went through the computer catalogue with them  to make sure. (both sets supplied by independent suppliers).

P.P.S... Yes FARB is a big job and should done at a suspension specialist and taken to one straight after to be aligned again properly (that's why it cost me a lot to install).

  • Author

only cost me £120 including new brakes installed in that cost.... (discs and pads) BUT I may have to pay again to get it straight :(

I have already sent awesome gti some pictures :)

don't know why I worry about things, my tame mechanic who did the work is gonna take it back tomorrow and fix it, no worries :)

You are right, no need to worry! I personally just do not like the buggeration of having things done twice and wasting my time, which is one thing in life nobody can make or purchase...

apparently, on the mondeo there are pins for perfectly relocating the subframe ect ..... but not on the fabia..... you disconect the steering rack, from the subframe, then drop the subframe, just a tiny movement of either, will result in the steering wheel being off...!! I happened to call in as they were finishing, as I had to bring some pads, as the yellowstuff were wrong, and they just let me take the car.... they would have test drove it otherwise.... they will put it right properly, by disconecting the subframe again ect .... I would rather do that , than take it to a wheel alignment place, where they might just twist the track rod ends to make it straight!

I'm off work sick at the moment, so not doing much (except coughing and popping pills!) , I'm just happy it will be sorted....

on the driving front it all seems tighter, less roll, and if possible more comfy! think it just feels better and more stable as the back matches the front now....... first test will be with track tyres and castle coombe, still on soft winters at the moment :)

and... "Time is the hunter that catches all his prey......"

I am in the same boat as you health wise! I've just finished 7 day doctor's issued sick leave and have to come back to work tomorrow, still coughing my lungs out causing massive headaches. Unfortunately it is a viral infection and there is nothing I can do to get rid of it - I tried many things...

I was just buying LED interior bulbs lol!

As to the subframe, I have a habit of making marks on parts I dismantle so then I know how they should come together in the exact same way, simple but effective. In any case, laser tracking alignment would probably do your car good in any case so treat her to one!

update: awsome have the right pads, gonna send the wrong ones back, and they will refund postage :)
