Guide: Upgrading Columbus firmware and maps

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm a new owner of a skoda superb 2, and i have a question regarding the columbus.

How would i see the firmware version or the maps version?

I keept the setup key pressed for quite some time but all i see is a radio test for am and fm... nothing else!

Any advice?

You should use the forum search function.

Anyway, the hidden menu is usually not enabled by default, you have to enable it either by using VCDS or by burning an appropriate ISO on a CD and feeding the unit with it. If you can't do either, you can always pull the unit out and read the label on top.

  • This is a rather disturbing development which you all should be aware of. Someone bought a "firmware update disc" off ebay and after then trying to update his unit ended up with a brick. He contacted

I'd always go with reading the label on the top as this will show the FACTORY version you have (HW and SW/FW).

Looking on the screen shows the SW UPDATED version which can lead you into choosing the wrong firmware for your device.

Thanks all for the advice. I guess I was hoping for a solution that didn't involve upgrading or downgrading firmware.

I will load new firmware today and if successful, load v13 maps and report back here.

I am no further forward with this today.

I tried what I thought was 5238 however got the swl error suggesting I press setup, mic and eject and try again.

I tried again and got the swl success screen within 2 minutes which I know is far too quick. Still stuck with 4120 with the same issues. I think the disc in tried is a vim disc and not 5238.

Following Karls advice above, I have downloaded 4020 today and will try a firmware downgrade at the weekend!

Again I will report back here.

Do a google search for RNS_510_FW_5238_update and get the first result. Correct file size is about 700 MB. If you do not have a hardware fault (not very likely, but...) then 5238 is the way to go.

Good call, the disc I have is 156kb whereas 5238 update is 493mb and the original is 638mb.

So yesterday I downloaded 4020 (FW_4020_70_20_5.iso) which I presume is the right version.

If I decided to then upgrade to 5238, would I need to download the original or update? Not sure of the difference?

Despite the difference in the file names, both RNS_510_FW_5269_update.rar and FW_5238_ORIG.iso is the same (you can verify this). This version was created by josi and you can see it by reading version.txt from the CD root.

It is an update version, meaning it retains the coding and the hard disk contents (unless you come from a pre 3xxx firmware with two partitions only, in this case maps/mp3 will be wiped).

So, i have opened the setup option in my skoda, and it seems i have SW -Version 1304.

Do i update to the latest one?

It would have been easier if I would have done this in the previous post, but i don't know how to edit it.

Go for version 5238, see previous posts.

Big thanks to *murph* on here. He spent hours at mine yesterday assisting me reinstalling 4120 and v11 maps.

All appears fine now, no lagging etc. Will look at installing v13 maps in a few weeks once I know everything is still working fine and I don't have to up or downgrade firmware.

Glad it's all sorted mate.

Glad it's all sorted mate.

Cheers mate, *murph* scanned the car first to ensure something else wasn't causing the lagging. As expected, no faults.

Hi Folks,

has anyone come across a situation where the current position on the sat nav map, is NOT actually the real position on where you're located? It's like the map is 20 feet out of sync??? WFT?

And i've noticed that the North position button is not selectable??

I'm going to re-load the DVD again i guess.....Bizarre:(

thanks

There is usually a lag between actual position and displayed position. Naturally it's worse as you drive faster.

It depends upon how many and which satellites it can actually lock onto. Have you checked to see how many are visible / in use?

hi guys.i am new here.please tell me the latest firmware off columbus and also maps

Latest firmware depends on your hardware version. Latest maps are V13.

When was V13 mapped out. I.e new roads put on it?

It was published around September 2015. It should include the latest Navteq maps to that date.

I have an old 1Z0 A unit. Currently on FW 4020 and maps V9 or V10. With it being an old unit. Is it safe to update maps?

Sent from my Galaxy S5

Perfectly safe to do the maps, as long as once you start you can get the unit to load them completely. The older units have become a bit flaky at loading dvds and once you start it wipes the old maps so you're committed. The newer maps get larger and larger so more data is squeezed onto the dvd meaning the laser has to read more accurately.

Just keep in mind that V13 maps are big and need Dual Layer DVD to fit, making it a little bit harder to work.

Where can you get the v13 maps from for a sensible price?

How long before that link to illegal downloads gets removed?
