Guide: Upgrading Columbus firmware and maps

Yeah, but it could've been either a factory or a dealer .iso, Depends which actual one you went for.

Should I consider myself lucky that mine updated to 4120 from 2*** firmware without needing any recoding for the MFSW when I updated firmware last year or is Bikerz unlucky?

I was doing alot of messing around buddy, so prob my fault. Im doing it on the Mrs Golf R mk6.

Oki so coding in steering wheel is same as before. Grrr

Another possibility, again it depends on if the firmware was a factory one applied or one that had been amended to work on a older unit.

On an older unit, the steering wheel controls stop working when applying the update and there is a fix which involves swapping two files on the firmware disc to get the controls back again. Those two files are SKTables and PQTables, I cannot remember the extension or location as its been a few years since I had a Skoda.

There is a chance the firmware disc you downloaded had these files swapped in advance, and this will cause issues with later units because the controls will no longer work. You basically need an unmodified factory firmware disc.

Can you post a link to the firmware you used?

I just realised I didn't get mine from mygti.com..... I used the FW4120 from rnsfirmware.com linked to in post #1 in this thread. :)

As I say I had no coding to do after the upgrade and same again when I had to re-install the FW again in August this year after the unit had a moment and defaulted to German with no audio (Although I had to enable software downgrade in the hidden menu to re-install 4120). I've also changed the steering wheel since too to the three spoke flappy paddle wheel with the same buttons either side.

For info.... The details of my Columbus before I originally updated to FW4120 were as follows.....

Delivery Part Number: 3T0035680 A

Hardware Version: H42

Software Version: 2724

Thanks buddy

I just did the quick reset holing the star button and life is PERFECT! 4120 Software, V12 maps and steering wheel controls! At last perfect!

Good stuff.

 My unit is a version C unit. ????

A new and inventive way around the swear filter??  :clap:  :D

I will report back with version and details and go from there, thanks guys

I have this unit: 3T0 035 680 A (3T0035680A) H42 with SW 2724 in my Skoda Superb.

Ok guys where can I go from here

Thanks again

Unmodified 4020 or 4120 (if you want radio text).

Personally I'd go to 4020 and leave it there.

There are higher versions you can go to, but they bring nothing new to the Columbus.

hello there

my machine is

can any one tell me if the latest fw 6276 is better than the fw i have?

regards

vv

6276 (or any 6*** based firmware) will destroy your unit. It's for a different hardware than you have, and will not end well if you try and update it to 6***.

So i get the CD with 4020 firmware then install via disc?

Will 2015 maps work on this after?

cheers

Should do.

I have the same HU as you and had no issues with the latest maps in 4020 but did on 4120 as the partitions size is slightly different and the newer maps (v.11+ I think) are slightly larger. Even more so if you have one with speed camera database already installed.

Now we are getting somewhere

Will my steering wheel controls etc have any issue with the 4020, i dont want to bang on the firmware then find none of it works LOL

cheer for the help s far

Ive transferred my Columbus from a pre-FL Octavia with no MFSW to a 2010 Yeti with MFSW and no new firmware was needed nor recoding doing.

Hi guys. I've just updated my firmware to 3814 and maps to 8195. Everything is working (mfsw, phone etc) except now I'm not getting the navigation on the maxidot. I've got an older unit (2009), that's why I opted for 3814 and not a newer version. How do I get the navigation back on maxidot? Sorry if this has been covered before, but there are a lot of pages to trawl through.

Thanks in advance.

Have you rebooted the Columbus?

Can you check the coding with VCDS to see if the communication protocol has changed during the update?

And check the CAN Gateway still shows that 'Navigation' is present.

And check Maxidot just to make sure that 'Navigation' is still to be a displayed option.

Worth dismissing the simple things first before messing with more complex ones!

Thanks for your quick response.

Am I right in thinking that I'd need vcds to do all of those things you suggested, or is there anything I can check without it?

Ps. I have rebooted the unit twice, just to make sure.

1st & 4th don't need VCDS. 2nd & 3rd do.

Ok, right. I've rebooted the unit twice and that has made no difference. On maxidot, where it says MFD, Phone and Setup, it used to also have Audio and Navigation. Both of those things have now disappeared. Is that what you meant by checking maxidot to see if navigation is enabled?

Hey buddy, did you have any issues with your sat nav direction on your maxidot? or steering wheel controls?

I have the exact same system and software as you

cheers

Hi all,

Thought this might help someone else so I have put together a little guide on upgrading firmware and loading maps on the Columbus unit.

**PLEASE NOTE: Neither myself, or anyone associated with Briskoda.net is responsible for upgrading your unit, it is done at your own risk as there is a chance you can brick your unit**

First of all you need the relevant firmware for your device - some doesn't work with older versions, or there are some modified versions about. The firmware is available freely and you can have a look at http://www.rnsfirmware.com/ or http://www.my-gti.com/category/in-car-entertainment/rns-510-in-car-entertainment (some links on this site doesn't work, but the alternative download does seem to work) to find the relevant firmware.

**YOU WILL NEED YOUR MAPS DVD AFTER INSTALLING NEW FIRMWARE AND YOU WILL ALSO LOSE ALL MUSIC, ETC THAT HAS BEEN SAVED ON THE HARD DRIVE!**

For reference, my Columbus is part number: 3T0 035 680 A and on top of the unit it says HW: H42, SW: 2724. I downloaded the RNS510 firmware 4120 modified for Europe from the http://www.rnsfirmware.com/ link (File name is: EU_4120_FW_70_25_5.ISO).

The next step is to burn the ISO image onto a disk, for this I used Astroburn Lite which is an add-on of Deamon Tools Lite. You can use any image burner software for this, as long as you don't just burn the acutal .ISO file onto the disk as this will not work. An important note is to burn at the lowest speed available! I used Verbatim DVD+R disks and burnt it at 4x speed.

Once this is complete you are ready to update your Columbus. The instructions for this is simple, put the key in the ignition but do not start the car. Turn the Columbus on and insert the disk - you will be presented with the following screen;

2013-12-15091309_zps5a1cd563.jpg

The unit might restart but you will be presented with this screen after a little while;

2013-12-15091411_zpsb48b63dc.jpg

You have about 10 seconds to press OK or it just continues automatically anyway.

It took about 50 minutes for the firmware to update, there were multiple restarts and some odd noises coming from the unit, but this is all normal! Some during update screenshots;

2013-12-15091449_zps9f2db609.jpg

2013-12-15094700_zps2fae0472.jpg

Once all the stages has completed you will be presented with this screen;

2013-12-15094934_zps70866b3f.jpg

Remove the disk and the unit will restart. I think mine just turned off so I had to turn it back on manually.

To confirm firmware has been installed press and hold the Setup button until you can see Version Info - press on this and it will show SW-Version - in my case it was 4120. At this point the map information will just show "-" as no maps will be loaded.

Now to install the maps;

Insert the maps DVD into the Columbus (The map disks are copyrighted so you will need to visit a dealer or buy an official map DVD disk). Nothing will happen on the screen when you insert the disk other than some noises where the disk will sound like it is being read. To get the screen up to show you how far the update/install process is press the eject button on the CD/DVD slot and the following screen will come up;

2013-12-15102000_zps99dee27c.jpg

This process took around 40 minutes and in the end this screen was shown;

2013-12-15103420_zpsbfb18c37.jpg

Press on "Eject" and the disk will be ejected. To confirm maps has been loaded correctly press and hold the Setup button again until you can see Version Info. Press on this and you will see Active map coverage which in my case is "West Europe", Active map supplier will be "Navteq" and the important one "Map Version HDD" which again in my case is 8048 (This is VW V10 maps for reference).

Success! And your all done :)

Wanted to say thank you to a couple of members on here for loads of advice and putting up with a million questions from me :D especially; adamal and KBPhoto.

Any questions, I'm sure someone will be able to give the answer so ask away.

1st & 4th don't need VCDS. 2nd & 3rd do.

Would this have anything to do with my woes?

Revision A, B and C revision units

These units will become SW revision D after the upgrade however when coding the unit using VCDS you will receive the error

“Coding Rejected, Error 31: Request Out of Range”

Before saving the new coding manually add a 10th byte (00) at the end before pressing “Do It” as per the example below

9 byte coding (A/B/C SW revisions):

020104000400001100

10 byte coding (D SW revision):

02010400040000110000
