How can I disable start/stop with VCDS ?

Featured Replies

Hi there.

Is there a way to disable start/stop system using VCDS for example?

Its pretty annoying when I just stop for a second, and then it turns off and on etc...

Of course I know that I can press the button and it disables it, but thats only untill I restart the car.

I think that the default should be that the system is off, and when you want to save a little bit more on gas, you can turn it on (for example when waiting in long stop-lights).

Is there a way to fully disable it, or even better just make it off by default using VCDS (or some other way?).

thanks.

  • I really don't understand why you want it turning off Its a money saving/environment feature that all cars should have IMO

  • Personal preference, I like it but some don't. Like lots of features - cornering fogs, AFS, Full beam assist, Front Assist etc. Some people like them, some don't. Given the lengths I am going to in

  • Umm, which is exactly what S-S does automatically?  :wonder:

On my DSG car if I stop with just enough pressure to hold the car then the start/stop doesn't cut in.  I have to push the brake a bit harder for it to cut in.

Taxed is based on CO2 output which is dependent on use of stop/start so no chance of being able to disable it out of the box.

AFAIK it cannot be disabled with VCDS.

Even with it switched on it's still upto the driver to allow it to stop the engine, on a DSG by pressing the brake pedal harder and on a manual by putting it in neutral and lifting the clutch, if you're only stopping for a second then don't do either of these.....

There are ways by adjusting the temperature and voltage thresholds. At your own risk!

I have yet to try it but there is a coding/adaption bit which is set to kill the stop/start when temps get below XX - default is -50 degrees, so all you need to do is set to 50 (in theory) and stop/start won't kick in.  I need a guinea pig to test this on though. ;)

Doesnt work on '14 Octavia vRS...

VCP now has a One Click Function for disabling Start Stop.

Have you tested it? What does the one click function do? It changes the temperature thresholds or something else?

Not tried it yet as my car is having software updates done due to a start stop issue.

Interested in this, let us know when you have more information.

Will do - reports are that it works, but I don't know exactly which parameters it alters yet as I can't try it on my car until the Start Stop system is fixed!

I love it, what's not to like about saving money :) having the engine running when stationary is pointless, unless the car needs it to be running in which case it'll keep it on.

Given the lengths I am going to in regards to getting it fixed on mine I am unlikely to turn it off.

Its good on manual cars as unless you hold the brake/handbrake, stick the car in neutral and lift the clutch the engine continues to run. You therefore have a bit more of a choice as to whether you want it to activate or not rather than relying on brake peddle pressure as on the DSG.

I bet the disabling via VCDS just causes the system to be permanently switched off as per the dash button but will remain off after ignition off and on. Be reversable too.

That said its actually a feature that works well so really not sure why you'd strive to deactivate it; particularly ob a manual.

I also don't like it in my car: 2,0 CR-TDI with DSG.

- it causes some delay (min. 0.5 sec) when you need instant start. It is "almost nothing" but can cause big trouble in dangerous situations

- the engine (and the car) "jumps" a little when stopped/started and this is annoying for me

- when you start turning but you have to stop the engine stops and the steering wheel becomes heavy and starts self-turning back to centre

I know I could play with the brake pedal pressure but I also don't like it :)

In my opinion this is a good system with manual but not with DSG.

And I drive only 5-10% in city.

In a car with manual you have more options (clutch pedal) when you don't want S/S to activate. I have only the brake pedal.

When I start the car, I turn it off instantly.

Best way to stop.. Start/Stop is to leave the heater fan on....!!

The heater needs the engine to run ...

I'm with Aki78 on this one although unlike him I do 99% of my driving in town.

On the DSG cars it's just awful.  I hate all this 'hold it on the brakes' malarky and prefer to put it in neutral with H/B on.  I could put it in park but it's more hassle and you can't just roll forward if you're on a hill (and there are lots of hills here).

IMO there is little to be saved in terms of fuel and the big downside is the starter and ring gear will wear out prematurely which would more than make up for any tiny fuel savings I could make.  If there's a way to permanently disable it I will be at the front of the queue to have it done.

Doubt that very much, they will be beefed up to cope with the extra work.  Stop/Start has been around for a long time now and i've never heard of issues caused by more frequent stops and starts.

I hope not, but as with anything, the more it's used the faster it will wear.  On my 3 mile commute to work each morning the S/S (on the one occasion I let it) kicked in 23 times.  I work 233 days a year so that's 5359 extra engine starts per year.  Beefed up, maybe, but I remain unconvinced :)

On my manual if the vehicle is doing more than exactly 2 km/h it will self start. In gear, out of gear, etc, as long as there is movement over 2kmh still the same. Maybe leave a bit of a gap to the car in front and crawl a bit?

On DSG it's a whole different story involving brakes, starting engine before going into gear etc....

Ah.... I have the solution to S/S.... it's the shiny thing you stick in the side of the steering column.  What you could do if you want to save fuel is twist it to the left about 90 degrees.  Then when you are ready to go again, twist it to the right until the big metal thing under the bonnet coughs into life

I'm still waiting for my car but I'm looking forward to stop start. For my entire driving life (22 years) I've been in the habit of stopping the engine if I'm in a queue.  It's always amazed me how few people do it. I've been stuck in jams on the motorway for hours and seen the exhaust pipes on most cars issuing fumes.  The problem for me doing it manually is never quite knowing battery condition I have to be cautious and won't do  more than a few stop starts in close succession.  Looking forward to some vag cleverness ...simply cleverness to do all that.
