My Aircon is terrible.... whats it normally like in the fabia?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

so having owned my Fabia for just over 2 months i have noticed that my aircon is basically doing nothing.... on full cold it blows the same as with the aircon off...

only now noticed as it has gotten warm, (I know I know should use it often to keep it good) my guess is that it might not have been working before i bought the car, although it has a warranty i dout it would cover the aircon (its quite a basic warranty...)

so what is the first thing to check? any ideas?

Thanks

Daz

Ours is excellent since getting it re-gassed a couple of summers ago. It made a hissing sound from within the depths of the dashboard prior to the re-gas, does yours, when you switch it on?

There is no requirement to run it regularly in the Fabia by the way. Even when switched off, a trickle of refrigerant ccontinues to be circulated.

should there be a drop in revs when you turn the aircon on? as mine does not drop at all.....

Only noticed the rev change in my old 1.4 Mpi Petrol Fabia, but not the 1.9 TDI

I'd get it regassed personally. I had mine done last summer, I don't think it had been regassed since it rolled out the factory. Now it's excellent.

Once the gas pressure falls below a certain level the system is basically disabled, if yours is in serious need of a re-gas then that is why you aint hearing the revs change..... Providing theres no damage or leaks in your system then a recharge should fix it. ( It did with mine last year )

As above, a leak test and re-gas will most likely get you nice and chilly again.

Knocked mine on for the first time on Sunday. Soooooooo nice on a hot, hot day.

First thing to do... change your pollen filter.

follow the guide to remove the old one (simple enough), bet its full of muck, leaves, condoms... whatever! You won't believe the difference when you do change it.

Otherwise go and get a leak test at KwikFit or the like. Could be compressor related, they do eventually fail on most cars.

I thought mine had gone naff when coming back after having my cooling fixed, starting to wonder....

Then I realised I hadn't pressed the "A" button....is it possible it could be that silly !......

This is true but works a treat in the winter as a de-humidifier...

I didn't know that.

Just had mine checked and re-gassed.

Absolutely bob on now.

Mine is hissy too, works fine though. Had a regass and service last year. Is the fabia know for having hissy aircon or is it just luck of the draw? Anything that can be done to improve it?

well just got back from ATS, they did a leak test and found the system to be leaking, but they could not find the leak......

so did not cost me anything but now if i want the aircon got to go on a mission and find the leak....

What a bugger!

Right, first thing to do is check if the air con is working at all.

1.Start car & set heat to cold, switch on air con & open the bonnet. Check if air con radiator fan is spinning, if it is spinning go to step 3. If not go to step two.

2. Check the clutch plate on the air con compressor. The clutch plate is located at the side of the compressor pully wheel, if it rotates freely & doesnt turn the pully wheel then your compressor is broke & you need to replace it. If its quite firm & rotates with the pully wheel then go to step 3.

4. Check fuses.

3. Have your air-con regassed & checked for leaks.

5. Check compressor is receiving a voltage.

6. Replace high pressure sender.

My air con is working fine, but both radiator fans are off for some reasons. Only when the engine heats up they both start , but I've never seen only one of them spinning. Would this be a problem ?

Hence why I don't let any tyre places touch my car - especially when it comes down to something like air con!

Any person that has had the correct f-gas training should be able to find the leak easily - which just shows these guys obviously aren't trained correctly. My local VAG specialist found my leak in a matter of minutes by filling the system with Nitrogen and using a sniffer and was found to be the condensor housing had failed.

Take it to Air Con specialist or an independent garage and get someone correctly training to look at it...

Chris Berry - bad advice there, ATS will have had any remaining charge out and tried to vac it down - and failed, so who knows what they did next as they should not have recharged a system with a known leak.

To the OP, go to or get a mobile auto aircon guy to come to you, he will understand how these systems work and how to find leaks, these other monkeys, in the main, will have sent someone on a crappy (well at least very basic understanding of the regs and how these gases affect the environment) course so that the workshop is legal to work on these systems, then bought an automatic R134a handling unit - it is the only part that has a brain.

I'm F-GAS Qualified up to Category 1, but that does not make me smart enough to sort any A/C system, it just makes me legal to work on A/C systems of any size.

Sorry if I didn't make that step a bit clearer, what I meant was to get the air con checked at an approved garage for leaks and if it requires a recharge.

My previous points were to diagnose if the air is faulty without the need and expense of taking it to a garage.
