If you do strip the car, which woudl be a bit of a shame, I'd be interested in the full 312mm brake package.

 

Alternatively, you could try and negotiate with the outfit that supplied the car, I've done that before and got myself a nice discount. At least around here, the lease companies don't actually want to have to take the car back...

I shall let you know, I've got more time to play with anyway but I've made enquiries on the car lease as well :)

As you mentioned, why not use a CR170 DPF ?

They seem to do around 215bhp.

That's an interesting approach actually, not thought of it that way. Could be a good 'everyday' solution to freeing up a bit more performance :thumbup:

That was my thinking exactly, theres a few knocking around on eBay at the £200 mark which is about £120 cheeper than a stainless downpipe and keeps things nice and eco friendly :)

I was looking at DPF part numbers etc a while back, I think there are a few variations about - so would need to check what the differences are and if it makes any difference to what fits physically.

Maybe the pipework is a different shape for the 170 engine, as it has to fit around the propshaft exiting the gearbox ?

 

I guess there *could* be a little bit of custom mapping required, regarding the exhaust pressures measured pre- and post-DPF ?

Shark only go up to about 205 with the DPF fitted, they say you need it removed/gutted to go beyond that.

 

But it raises an interesting question - is there a DPF from another engine that could be fitted to a CR170 to allow mapping to higher figures while retaining the DPF function ??

The CR184 can be mapped to 235 - with the DPF still fitted I think. What are the chances of a CR184 DPF fitting a CR170 do you think ?

Well it is to me anyway, Performance VW Magazine want to do a piece on 'Project Sharky' for their Built not Bought section :)

 

Out of interest, what is their definition of "Built not Bought" ?

 

I've always found that a curious phrase, usually used by people who fit all their own mods and do any adaptations that are needed to make things fit.

Although they typically buy most of their bits as made items in exchange for cash.

Exactly, surely it's all bought unless every item is self fabricated, then you've still got to buy the materials.

It's been so long since I bought a tuning mag, I hope you'll post it up when the feature is done.

I always thought built not bought was for shady people that stole their parts.

Ot for a moment:

most people who are proud to say built not bought never want to take their cars on track.

I always thought it meant they didn't trust their own work/ parts used

I think the mongrel is built not bought.  Mostly done by me getting parts and my mate having to "mongrel" my car to get them to work, hence the name :D

yours is probably the only one that fits the bill properly jason... It's not the original PD100, its not a vRS.... Its a "mongrel!" :)

Back at Shark Performance again, the droning noise I've been getting turns out to be a wheel bearing on the nearside front, one of the hubs from the brake upgrade!!

 

I was told they only had a thousand miles on them and the brakes seem to tell the same story, its the gamble you take with second hand parts, even nearly new ones!!
