Before finally opting for the Superb estate, I have looked at....

Hyundai Tucsan

Octavia estate

BMW 3 series touring

Qashqai

Rav4 Hybrid

Tiguan

Golf R estate

Honda HRV

Mazda CX5

Apart from the golf, try getting a test drive in a petrol version with all the bias towards diesels these days!

Sat in the new Avensis - I like Toyota but it´s to small. Tried the Passat, but found it to be overpriced, and not as nice as the Superb. Ford Mondeo? Would never-ever buy a Ford. Did not even consider the Opel (or, Vauxhall, as you prefer) Insignia. It´s to small inside. So, bottom end, it was an easy choice, when coming from a Superb Mk. II. No other car gives the same space, gadgets/equipment and engine as the Superb compared to the price. Note that the situation might be slightly different over here, due to taxes. I can see, that many of you mention cars like the Audi A6, Volvo V70, Jaguar etc. as competitors. Over here, they are roughly double the price of the Superb. If money was not a problem, I would go for an Audi A6. The space on the backseat is a little limited compared to the Superb, but I could live with that.

You're right about that, Starting my Citroën the following ones are all company cars (which are cheap in Belgium). Because lease-prices are dependent on CO2-emissions eg. a mid-spec Jaguar is in the same pricerange as the Superb L&K. V70 is also similar, but A6 is significantly more expensive. But, on the other hand eg a Mazda 6 was also a lot more expensive while the list-price is lower. This tends to be very country-specific.

Test drove: Skoda Superb 3

                 Skoda Ocatvia

                 Audi A6 (second hand)

                 Merc E class (second Hand)

                 Mazda 6

                 Volvo S60

Choose the Skpda Superb 1.4 TSI ACT SEL-Exec, Just gave me more room comfort and gadgets for the money (oh and I got a new car) the closest to changing my mind was the Mazda 6 as it looks pretty good and drove nicely as well, but just not the same level if space and comfort plus it was only a saloon not hatch back. Liked the A6 and the merc but just couldnt justify the same out lay for a second hand car plus the extra cost of insurance and servicing.

Previous cars:

61 plate laguna 1.5 Dci

57 plate Megan estate 1.5 Dci

02 plate Mondoe 2L TDCI Zetec (crap car great engine when it worked)

R reg Mk 1 Laguna 2.2 d

R reg Rover 214 IS

L reg Fiesta 1.8 D

F reg Rover Meastro 2l turbo  EFi

T (1974) reg Feista 1.0

Hands down the Superb is the best car I have ever had on all fronts its is truly SUPERB, I plan on keeping her for a long time.

I was very silly and impulsive last autumn and only tried the Superb...fell for it straight away - so comfortable and spacious. Tried a 2.0TDi in manual and DSG flavours and also a 1.4TSi, before buying a 2.0TSi that I hadn't tried! Didn't try a DCC car, either, but ordered it anyway as I felt the standard suspension was a bit too soft and wallowy.

I usually spend months looking for the right car (never had new before).

Really pleased with the car, no regrets at all, except that maybe I should have spec'd a reversing camera.

Previously owned:

1996/N Fiat Cinquecento Sporting - oh, the power, and hilarious fully loaded for the trip back to university with my wife to be, including a roof box that seemed like twice the size of the car...then we stopped at Ikea en-route

1986/D VX Nova SR - very rusty temporary stopgap...

1990/H Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi - loved that car, would love to have another one day, t'was a beaut, 61k miles, FSH and 2 lady owners in the days where most had been ruined

2005/05 RenaultSport Clio 182 FF - great fun, but never really gelled with it

2007/57 Nissan 350Z (313) GT - lovely, old-fashioned brute

2007/07 Renaultsport Megane 230 R26 - probably my favourite car to date, brilliant combination of fun and practical, but, alas, sold on Sunday to make way for the Superb family wagon...

Prior to placing our order for the new Superb Combi III we had a look at and test drove the following:

Ford Kuga, Renault Kadjar, Mazda CX-5, Kia Sorrento, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai and Nissan X-Trail, and finally Toyota Rav4.

The new Skoda we took for an extra-long drive. It just had to be a second Superb because that´s what it is. An easy choice since we also own a Superb Combi II which we bought new back in 2010.

So what cars have I owned prior?

Let´s start from yr 1 (my first car)

  • 1883 Renault 16TL (second hand)
  • 1984 Renault 16 TX (second hand)
  • 1987 Saab 900 (new)
  • 1995 Saab 900 (second hand)
  • 1997 Saab 900 (new, company car)
  • 2000 Saab 9-3 (new, company car)
  • 2001 Opel (Vauxhall) Astra Estate (second hand)
  • 2002 Saab 9-3 (new)
  • 2003 Saab 9-3 (new, company car)
  • 2006 Saab 9-3 (new, company car)
  • 2007 Honda CRV Executive (new, company car)
  • 2009 Mercedes E220 Estate (new, company car)
  • 2009 Audi A4 Quattro (new, company car)
  • 2010 Skoda Superb Combi (new)
  • 2012 Saab 9-3 Griffen (new, company car)

Looking back, I guess you could say that the SAAB 900/9-3 was my favourite car and model. Looking forward though I think the Skoda Superb is going to be my new favourite.

Prior to ordering our Superb II back in 2010 we had a look and test drove the following:

Ford Mondeo, Volvo V70, Saab 9-5 Griffen, Honda CRV, Volkswagen Passat and Touareg. The Superb we could take for the day and this probably won us over. Spacious, good engine and automatic transmission and finally excellent price and value.

Hopefully Skoda will continue to keep this combination and if so it will be my favourite looking forward also.

There seems to be a theme here, Madness / Common Sense or Boring) almost alternating.

Good to see that your current wheels is a good compromise between the two themes.

My car history goes something like (years quoted are age of car, not a reflection of when purchased):

1968 Triumph Herald 13/60 (was already 20 years old when I got it to learn to drive and pass my test)

1984 Skoda Estelle 120LSE cost £80!

1987 Skoda Estelle 120L 5 speed, beige with vinyl roof - luxury

1991 Skoda Rapid 135ric - modern tech. Fuel injection and catalyst!

1993 Ford Mondeo saloon 1.6 engine, even more modern!

2002 (bought new) Yellow Octavia VRS, kept until 2013.

1993 VW Corrado, 1.6v 2.0l, a money pit of I recall correctly. Ended up breaking it, still have half of it in the garage!

1996 Ford Escort, sold on for a profit after 6 months use

1997 Ford Mondeo, hatch this time and 1.8 zetec engine

2004 Skoda Superb 1.9tdi - mmm heated seats!

2009 (bought new) Skoda Octavia mk2 vRS, sold a year later to help with house move

2005 Skoda Superb edition 100 1.9 tdi, like the previous one but black!

1989 Skoda Rapid 136 - now in blue with K series engine

2011 Vauxhall Insignia ST wagon, 2 litre auto - quick, easy to drive but not especially inspiring

2003 Skoda Octavia vRS in yellow again!

2015 Skoda Superb 1.4 act hatch in place of Insignia (new obviously)

Still have the Rapid and 2003 Octy, both modified.

So ahead of switching back to a new Superb, I sat in a Mondeo but didn't like the dash layout (same for all Fords at the moment I'm afraid) and that was about the depth of my research other than reading early thoughts on here and magazine reviews.

Not many cars for 50 years of motoring! All privately owned and none were for business use. As you can see I was faithful to Volvo for 28 years and I believe the Skoda Superb Estate is a worthy successor to the Volvo estates, even down to having the car park ticket clip on the windscreen! Having been extremely satisfied with the Elegance 170 DSG Estate, I didn't test drive another car.  All my vehicles were purchased second hand, but my two Skodas were the lowest mileage cars I've ever bought.  The 190 Estate had only 2,600 miles on the clock.

I was going to by a second hand 5 series, Kia Sorento or e class but by complete luck had a new superb as a hire car to go down to London one day and absolutely loved it! Looked at the prices between the cars and it was a no brainier for me. I was willing to go look at a Passat if skoda did not offer a good deal on what I was looking for but they did so I went no further.

Other hire cars I've had in 2015 inc a3 saloon, q3, Astra. I still preferred the Superb. I've got an octavia from the dealership at the moment on loan, it is a nice car but as a lot of people already mentioned the superb just seem that bit classier and a bigger!
