Mk 3 vRS wanted! Advice please!

Featured Replies

Evening all,

I've had my Mk2 FL petrol vRS DSG estate with leather, Columbus, curtain bags and xenons since new in July 2010.

I have LOVED this car - best I've ever had.

It it has never let me down. It has been fun, comfortable, fast, frugal (-ish!) and the perfect family car. With bikes fitted on the detachable towbar and the roof box on, we can carry so much stuff on our long trips away or to the continent. The travel mode headlight function is a fabulous feature flattening the beam so that our continental cousins aren't blinded by the xenons! Steel wheels and winter tyres have made it brilliant in the wet, cold and sometimes snowy weather we can get here in the Mendips. In short, it's been an incredible all rounder.

BUT, the time has finally come. A newer, faster, more fuel efficient car is needed and I have decided to change while the vRS still has a little value left in it.

I have been trawling my second favourite website, Autotrader, for months, and have considered several cars, mainly 2 litre petrol estates, and was particularly tempted by a 328i Luxury Touring (245bhp, prof nav, lots of toys) for a while, but always kept coming back to the value and quality of Skoda.

So, there it is, decision made.  I have about £16k (possibly a little more) to spend, including trade in or private sale of my Mk2, and am on the hunt for the right '63, '14 or '64 plate vRS petrol estate.

Sadly, our needs are quite specific, so we are struggling. Keen on silver (again) or possibly black, Columbus and DSG. Leather or part leather too. Also keen on less than 40k miles.  There are about 7 available at the moment, but only one with Columbus, and they are nearly all race blue or white.

Any thoughts welcomed. I've looked at Autotrader, as I've said, and Pistonheads. Anywhere else I should go?

Or, if anyone on here has one they're looking to sell that fits the bill, please let me know!

Cheers all,

Dunc

  • Last day with my Silver MkII today. Taking out my bits & bobs, clearing the nav etc etc.    Has been the best car I've ever had - seven years from new! Will be very sad to see her go....

  • +1   The economy in my 230 is improving noticeably - I've just hit 10.5k.   Could have something to do with the warmer weather, but it's now much easier to get mid-high 30s mpg now

I made the jump from a MK2 FL VRS TSI and overall it's a better car imo. However, if you're after something more economical you're going to be disappointed. It's almost exactly the same as the MK2 FL TSI for economy despite there being a decent improvement on paper.

The Columbus is a big step forward from the RNS510 unit in the old one. I'd also recommend Canton sound system if you can find one with that.

Authorised Approved Second hand directly from the Skoda site, just might have what you want

@themanwithnoaimThanks bud. I'll have a look!

@ahennersThanks, better economy would be nice, but not a deal-breaker. I'm sure the car will cover most bases very well!

Cheers guys.

Half leather is standard on Mk3 vRS, full leather optional. Although it's not all real leather anyway...

eBay Motors may throw up a few more options?

@pist0nbr0ke Thanks buddy. I'll have a look.

When did Apple CarPlay arrive on Octavia systems? Might negate the need for navigation.

Thanks.

You need MIB 2 which I believe came in Model Year 16 so earliest is 65 plate - careful with that though, there may have been some built earlier but not registered until 65 which will still be MIB 1.

Thanks buddy. Looks like I'll need to find one with nav.

Thanks! They do, but just out of my price range for now.

Yeah can be on the top end of price but always have good specification models etc...But you never know! unless you try your luck with them. I hope you find the car you want & don't forget to post up a picture when you do

Will do.  Thanks!

Thanks Batvan, but has to be petrol!

Spoke to Meadens earlier - top tip, thanks - and they were very helpful. Lots of lease Mk3 vRSs coming in now. They'll be in touch when/if they have what I'm after.

So, if anyone out there is handing back a PCP'd motor fitting my wish list, please let me know which dealer. I'll travel anywhere in UK for the right car!

Thanks guys!

If it helps your choice, I managed 41mpg yesterday on a 50 mile trip (M25 and some traffic) in my TSI DSG estate vRS. I wasn't taking it that easy either. It seems to have got better as a few miles have gone on it (now at 15k).

Cheers Brooksuk! Choice already made, just need the right car now!

Could have something to do with the warmer weather, but it's now much easier to get mid-high 30s mpg now, even on shortish runs.

I do think giving the car a prolonged thrashing occasionally (where permitted) helps too. Can't beat a proper Italian tuneup!

maybe also the switch to summer fuel which is usually around this time of year.

Is there a seasonal change for petrol?

I didn't think so but agree with the sentiment. on my mk2 FL TSI, the winter consumption (edit: just gone) was probably worse by 5mpg, maybe more.  Combination of several things I suppose, lower engine temps - more friction, balance of more shorter trips over winter, lower temps has denser air... I was surprised how much worse it was though.

I agree there's definitely better mpg in the warmer months, but the post I quoted suggested a seasonal change in fuel. As far as I'm aware this only happens for diesel; "winter diesel" has a slightly different make up to stop it from gelling in low temperatures. There is no physical difference in petrol during the winter months.

Or a late 15 plate. The model year changes near the end of May, so new cars could be registered from end of June onwards.
