vRS245 ordered club

I'm probably going to open a can of worms here, so before I start... Sorry !

I have a new (5 week old) petrol VRS estate. The 227bhp version. Knowing that these VAG Tsi engines are good for tuning, I looked at my options.

1... The standard tuning box.

2...  Have the chip reprogrammed at a garage.

3...  Go the whole hog, and have it dyno'd, professionally tuned by a specialist whilst on the dyno, and get what I wanted.

Well, I chose number 3. Looked around for a tuner with a good reputation which turned out to be Will Spooner of Performance Torque of Wombourne, which was just down the road from me. Anyway, I made the appointment and wanted entry over. For me, it was a rather boring 3.5 hours during which Will discussed what I wanted entangled out of the tune, which was more power, more mid range grunt, and better mileage (all of which I have got). Once he had the base line to start from (which turned out to be 254bhp as standard - which Will said was quite normal on these engines, straight from the factory), the fun began. 3 rewrites of the chip later and a total of 6 dyno runs, I got 314.9bhp out of it, and an extra 79ft/lbs of torque. As I have now put another tank of fuel through it. If I am careful, I can get 37.8mpg out of her. In total, it cost me £271 and about 1/4 of am tank of fuel. The car goes like am rocketship when in vrs sport mode, and in eco when driven gently, I can get 5mph around town.

My question is.... If the standard VRS 230 is giving out 254bhp, why pay extra for a VRS 245 ?  And before anyone says. NO, I'm not knocking them, or you at all. I'm just interested.

Cheers all, Dave W

I could have ordered a 230 but would have spent thousands on extras to get it the level I wanted. The extra 15bhp was a nice bonus but the larger brakes were more important to me because I knew they could easily handle the extra power I would get from a stage 1 re-map that I did in March this year. I regularly see 42 to 43mpg with a best of 46mpg since the re-map as I also wanted the extra torque and power you were after.

The list price of my car was £27,595 which was Ford Focus ST money and as an added bonus I got metallic paint, spare wheel, reverse camera and electric sunroof for an extra £500. The re-map was also £500 giving a grand total of £28,600 for a very fast and very well equipped , spacious car which is great to drive. I'm sure a 230 is all of the above but I could easily have spent this amount on a 230 and know some people have probably spent upto £34,000 on a high spec DSG Estate, but people buy what they want and it's not always about how much power per pound. Other people will have their own reasons for choosing the 245 over the 230 but this was my choice.

Thank you shyVRS245.  That is the sort of reply I was after. I wasn't aware of the uprated brakes on the 245, so that is another good reason for your decision. My own car is still loosening up, and the mileage is still climbing, so I expect on a journey to get well over the 40+ mpg mark, as it's doing 35 to 37 around town, which for a petrol, to me is quite good. Thanks for your honest reply. Good luck with your 245. Cheers, Dave W

Yeah brakes on a 245 are mega FRONT VENTILATED 340mm and REAR VENTILATED 310mm. Only braked really hard once coming to a complete stop from 70mph and managed to activate the hazards automatically. Didn't know the car even had that feature but handy to let other motorists of problems on the motorway which I use almost daily unless they are following too closely then they will end up rear-ending me! Enjoy your 230 Dave I am sure you will, this is my fourth Skoda VRS and I am smitten.

...VAQ diff, bigger wheels as standard, Sport Mode display!

I priced up a 230 to the same spec as the 245 I wanted due to availability, and it would've cost more and still wouldn't have the bigger brakes or diff.

However, this does lead to another interesting question - if the standard 230 develops more than the 245 bhp of a vRS 245, is the 245's engine any different to the 230s? Or did Skoda just say "Hey, were getting more horses out of this as standard! Let's just say we hiked the power up by 15 bhp!"

Or does the 245 as standard develop around 260-265...? ie. A commensurately higher output as the 230?

There is a write up on the differences (engine) in one of the Magazine reviews quite a few revisions over the 230.

I don't know how many 245 owners have put their car on a dyno-run but mine only produced 248.6bhp as standard running Shell V-Power which is 99 octane like Tesco Momentum. There are other engine mods over the 230 such as up rated pistons and valves and a higher pressure fuel pump to squirt more fuel in so it should give a lot more power reliably when you start playing with the fuel/air mixture on a re-map. The increases that Dave W states do seem very good if no other work has been done and he does not mention what fuel was used for the re-map or whether he is now using standard 95 octane unleaded.

Pretty poor on 99ron minimum super unleaded.

I wonder if the VW508 00 oil is in the engine from the factory!

248.6 BHP on 95 ron should easily be achievable in the UK considering the Dyno is no higher than 3,000 ft above sea level and the temperature of the air being blown at the car.

Idea conditions.

It has to be able to achieve 245ps out on a road in high summer temperatures in many world regions at higher elevations.

Mine is cleared for the boat... someone buy my old one ffs!

Mine was built last week (apparently)

When people on here are giving updates (its at the port etc)  Does your dealer give these or do you get them yourselves from CS?

If mine was built as they told me how long til delivery, I'm thinking late may/june?

Well just had Maxine on to give me an update and offer me £300 of a compensation package.

I had stated of people on here getting £500, but no dice getting it moved up.

Hows this compensation work then?  I have put no money down, didn't previously have a skoda, they wont offer me any will they?

It's £300 to spend in the network. So accessories, servicing etc.

I have a deposit down, and this is for a lease, so strictly I don't own the car.

If you have been waiting from October like I have you should be entitled.

Oh I asked the dealer for the build.l number and then checked on the Skoda contact us page for updates.

Isn't the conventional wisdom 4 weeks?

Mine IS taking 6 weeks and still no car :(

13th March build date

When you've waited so long for the BW to come around you'd think they'd try and get the final transport right.
