Unusual tyre wear pattern

Featured Replies

Coming home tonight I got a low tyre pressure warning and expecting a puncture pulled in.

The issue was a little different as I seem to have missed an unusual wear pattern on the absolute inboard edge of the tread area (the last few mm only) has worn to the steel belting!  The tread depth across the full width of the front tyres is 4mm apart from right at the inboard shoulder of both front tyres.  The worn area is less than 10mm wide.

It almost looks like a tracking fault but I have never seen a pattern that narrow on any car I have owned in 40 years.

Tyre pressures are 2.4Bar on all four wheels (18” standard) and I do check tread depths but have never seen this type of wear before.

Does this sound like a tracking issue?  Any other possible causes?  Rears are absolutely fine and I don’t hoon round corners or roundabouts.

I have put the winter set on as I won’t have time to do anything about this for a few days, and having taken all 4 off have thoroughly checked them - finding both fronts in the same state so it was only a matter of time before the offside one also failed.

Possibly camber wear.  Could be caused by mis-alignment or even damaged/defective control arms, bushes etc.

Get it booked in to a local reputable garage who does 4 wheel alignment such as Hunter.

How old is the car?  The alignment on my Superb was awful from day one, how it wasn't picked up on PDI I'll never know.  Dealer sorted it without any issues though.

Hi, F B

It might be that you have tried to stradle the speed cushions,  this will nacker the inner shoulders in a very short time.

Is this the same issue?

I think you are being very optimistic, hoping the wheel alignment is checked at the PDI. The PDI covers very basic checks such as “lights and levels”..... in fact my last three cars have had incorrect tyre pressures.... one was at “transporter pressures” - very high so they don’t bounce around on the transporter when strapped down. The last car.... no tyre had the same pressure as any other on the vehicle. So I think you’ll find the dealer relies on factory setup for wheel alignment.

No I don't think I'm being optimistic; I just expected the steering wheel to be centered and the car not wanting to pull me into oncoming traffic.   It was obvious enough to me within 30 seconds of driving the car.

This is well known issue on Superb II, wearing 18" wheels.

I usually have camber / caster checked once a year, but it`s not the misalignment issue. Just Superb  (4x4 ?) - specific.

My solution was to inflate the tyres to max allowed pressure - 2,6 bar front and 3,2 bar rear. Not very comfortable drive, but at least you don`t have to change tyres every 20 000 kms.

Nope.  Very rarely go over any of that type.

I’ll get a 4-wheels alignment check done.  Tyres are pricy enough without this happening.  As long as the ACC isn’t going to throw a wobbly at the same time!  Definitely one for the Dealer to be made aware of though I suspect at 30,000 miles overall that may get laughed at. :dull:
