Is Kia the new Skoda?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. Lower real CO2 emissions = better real fuel economy. I only care about science, not 'on paper'/kidology stuff.

In other words to say "it's only about emissions, not fuel economy" makes no sense to me, as they are inextricably linked.

If that happens we're all f****ed regardless...   it's that outcome that scares me s***less about the prospect of another General Election!

Where have you been for the past 40 years?  Thanks to a certain Mrs Thatcher, we killed off production of a national asset and placed ourselves at the mercy of other countries. Do you realise 60% of UK power is imported from abroad?  Even if someone slightly left of Lenin were to take power, WE'VE NOW'T LEFT TO NATIONALISE !

Edit - we used to have a car industry until she ballsed that up as well. Now we're buying our cars from Czech Republic. And Spain apparently (in keeping with the theme of this thread :D )

And talking of things from the East the biggest risk to our energy security is Putin sat on that big pipeline valve.

We’re a touch off topic to be fair. Whoever mentioned Spain?

Czechs and Koreans was the starter for 10.

Interesting discussion nevertheless.

I think Kia are rapidly approaching parity with Skoda. I’m still very happy with my third and fourth Skodas, but some of the comments above echo my views. They are no longer the bargain they once were.

The dealers are variable and remind me more and more of the arrogant VW dealers who dealt with my ‘05 GTI, and the horrendous delays that the 245 chaps have had to deal with have further dented my view of the brand.

The plan was 280 Superb next in about 2 years’ time.

I will now be looking at the Stinger GT S market too when it comes to change. The Honest John review I posted above has really made me think. He absolutely loves it.

Love the the idea of the Kia badge too. Just to see my mates’ faces.  Some of them are still not over my Skoda fetish. Imagine what Kia would do to them!

Interesting times.

So, I have been a Skoda man for quite a while. Have had four cars from our favourite marque, and love the quality / vfm combination.

Currently in a 2014 Petrol vRS Estate DSG with Columbus and Pano and love it. Also have a 2013 Citigo Elegance 75. Great cars both.

Looking ahead, I was always planning a Superb 280 Estate or Hatch in about 2 years time. 2 - 2.5 years old.

But.....  Skoda have almost lost their USP in that they are starting to become quite pricey.

So, my head has been turned in looking for vfm. Just not interested in the ‘badge’.

I had a look at this yesterday and was extremely impressed. Okay, so it’s the halo model and costs £40k new. But with the anticipated steep depreciation, a GT S (3.3L twin turbo, 365bhp, sub 5 secs to 62, RWD, ALL the toys, huge boot etc. etc.), or even the 2L Petrol version (sub 6 to 62), could be the bargain of our times before long.

Are Kia about to become the new Skoda? Zero to hero in a few short years!

I was behind a Kia Stinger the other night, it's a long time since I have seen a car that has made me say "nice" out loud.

They will continue to have rarity value on their side for quite some time to come and most people won't have a clue where they're made or by whom!

The OTR price at over £40k includes the first year’s tax.

It retails under £40k so avoids the £450 a year tax band.

£35,000 will have a 67 plate with under 100 miles sitting outside your house, and by the end of the year £30,000 will get you one only light use, 'never raced or rallied' just Grand Toured,

Haha, I think you might be right. Gets more tempting the more I think about it.

The Superb 280 is a fabulous car and a proper sleeper, and was always my plan.

I like the 4WD too. But, the Stinger is horribly tempting as a 18-24 month old car. Hardly a sleeper though, just look at it!

While I'm not sure on the larger models my missus has a 2016 rio 2 and her parents a picanto and while they are OK (miles better than our courtesy Nissan juke)  they just don't feel as acomplished as vag cars yet... scratchy plastics, dodgy clutches, real life fuel economy is quite poor. Plus I don't think they are really that cheap...

Dunc69, i have driven one, carefully on an ungritted road at about -5*oC.  Not an all year round car for me, even if fitting the right tyres.

My Picanto Auto on the other hand was pretty damn good with a set of Avon Ice Touriing.

Kia's 4 speed Auto even back 12 years ago better than a ASG in a UP!MiiCitigo they still flog in 2018/

As has already been mentioned the Stinger will never make a value used purchase compared to a Superb. There simply won't be enough of them to drive prices down.

What keeps used Skoda's cheap is the fact that there are tons of them.

VWFS's have just offered to sell me the 2 year old 17,000 mile 150PS manual Octavia Scout estate I've been driving around in, for £13,500.

Cheep, cheep.

KIA UK will keep First Registering enough every quarter to have them not look total duds.

Just as VW UK & Skoda UK did with 1.4 TSI / TFSI Polo GTI / Audi A1 185 ps Twinchargers. Sell them to themselves.

Haha, great Picanto story. My Citigo is way better in the snow than the vRS.

I test drove the ASG in a Citigo - horrendous. So bought a manual.

Previous vRS (2010) was awesome on winters though, but the 16s won’t fit my 2014 vRS due to bigger brakes - won’t buy more winters though, despite living in the Mendips - not worth all the expense and hassle for 3-4 days a year.

Same thoughts on the Stinger. Sure, not a snow car, but a GT car for 360 days a year.

Fair enough. We’ll see.  If the Stinger is not a value 2nd hand car, will happily stick with the original plan - Superb 280.

That’s a lot of if's!

What if the ICE engine breaks down in your current car and it’s a weekend?

What if Labour gets in power and Corbyn nationalises the utilities and we have power strikes again. How do you charge you new electric car?

All equally ridiculous reasons

Don't worry Corbyn will never get elected or we're all STUFFED!:D

Auto Express says list price is £40,450 for a basic one so don't understand your argument of ignoring the first year road tax!:o

In fact, I don’t think you have read the thread at all. Why take the anti-Kia-you’ll crash your expensive Stinger attitude. And how often does it snow anyway? Hardly ever round my way. Again, read the thread.

All I am saying is that it is a tempting option for me (personal choice) against the Superb 280 I had originally planned for in two years’ time ...  if the second hand values tempt me.

We bought brand new Picanto Chill (standard Aircon)in March 2009 for £6,150 in metallic Silver. In 4 years of motoring it averaged 38-41 mpg and because it only covered 14,500 miles in that time (short commute for the wife) we got £3,950 trade against a used Skoda Superb in 2013. So in conclusion it was cheap to buy and hardly depreciated at all. Servicing was reasonable because after complaining how expensive first service was, dealer principal gave us 2nd and 3rd service for FREE.

Or just use winters?

Or as those that have had Beemers with winter tyres in the past, get x-drives now and the 2nd set of wheels with winter tyres and let those nice people at the main dealers store your wheels / tyres and change them for not very much cash money.

For your information I've read every single comment on this thread and already watched an online review of the Stinger GTS (not Honest John's) and I have owned a Kia for 4 years so perhaps am better placed than most that have commented on here!

Me!

With a young family, I'd rather have the money available in the bank - this is the time we need it to make the most of the kids growing up. I could have 'bought' a used 220/230 but that still would have been a lot of cash spent for an older used car.

I appreciate everyones situation is a bit difference, and if you were looking for a new car with next to outlay then yes its on face value cheap.

but for me 5+ years works out better on a solid used buy over leasing, as you will have something to show for it after that time rather than having to reenter the same arrangement all over again.

So for someone who has a good long term arranagement with their cars can work out;

As I still have my original Fabia 1, I still use a lot in the 140K miles area and bought myself new in 2006 ! So I dont think that will be too much of a problem lol.
Crikey makes me think, 12 years ! Thats less than £1k a year so far if you discount the minor servicing, and like free motoring from here on.
and I'd be seriously thinking about putting into retirement if it wasn't such all rounder fun and practical lol

The Octavia after 10 years would be pretty much the same so you have to ask yourself, look after your own car, £1k a year for 10 years, or you may prefer to lease the £220 quoted is 26,400 after 10 years !
Thats the price of a new Octavia, so even if you bought new, you might as well have just bought one new and ran it 10 years. It will perhaps be worth £2k at the end so actually you still have the car anyway worth something so you are £2k up.

Leasing only makes sense shorter terms IMO or if you just aren't sure where you situation will end up
