DTUK tuning box or not

Featured Replies

So I am thinking that my 190 TDI DSG could do with a little extra poke. I would prefer a remap but I have a concerns about the warranty on the car and I don’t want to take the risk. This leaves me with the option of a tuning box.

Do any any of you have any experience of a DTUK box on a 190 TDI??? I know it’s probably not going to improve the initial acceleration as it will be traction limited but will there be a noticeable improvement in the cars mid range?

Some of the comparison video’s on the YouTube don’t seem to show much of a difference for the extra 50 BHP claimed. Is a tuning box worth the money?

I always ran tuning boxes or various brands in my TDi's over the years.. never had any issues and make the diesels a lot punchier for general driving.. They also improve the MPG a bit too.. Just to note that although DTUK offer a 30 money back guarantee, they seem to keep £50 for restocking fee!!

Also just to note, a friends dad had ran a tuning box from day one on a 1.9 PD 130bhp passat and now has 250k miles on it on the original clutch..

i run a dt uk tuning box and pedal box on my 2017 superb sportline 190 and its fantastic. ive had it fitted from new and 8k in wouldnt go back.

Totally off topic but I have a 190 manual on Continental Premium Contact 5 tyres and can struggling for traction in second gear in the dry (not necessarily full throttle).  Had Michelin Premacys for 12 years on an Accord diesel and never any issue in the dry.  So I can only assume those of you with this engine and tuning boxes are running on different tyres?

Will be looking to go Michelin next time but want to make sure it is the tyres that are causing the traction issue.  Any feedback appreciated....

Ran a DTUK CRD3 system on my 150 TDI Octavia - highly recommend.

Just got around to fitting my DTUK Pedal box + which came off my previous car. I rang DTUK and checked it's compatibility with my S3 and luckily for me it was ok.  Five min install with the unit hidden inside the coin box. Now drives much nicer with an immediate throttle response no lag whatsoever. Running it on city mode +2 :thumbup:

Did you go for it in the end? If so how do you find it?

Hi. I haven’t got it yet. It’s something I’d like to do but I think my better half would rather the funds go towards a cruise and there is little point me going against that

but people could easily 'fall' overboard on a cruise, right? :notme:

I’m getting my 190 4x4 mapped by big fish in Stoksley in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to it. Had the Octavia done by shark and that was awesome

Keep us posted!

Does anyone know of a tuning box brings up that code on skoda diagnostic machines?  Contemplating maybe putting one on in the future...

It won't bring up any code as it is not registered anywhere neither it triggers any flash counter.

Is that for sure? Its that TD1 code that comes up

TD1 is the code that will come up after a typical software remap (after the flash counter has been triggered). Tuning boxes don't flash anything on the ECU, they just intercept a few sensors signals and send them to the ECU altered, essentially the ECU never sees any values over the factory ones so it's not technically possible to throw a TD1 just from having a tuning box connected.

Ok good to know thx for info

Would it be of any use for someone who mainly drives in eco mode? Would it disable the coasting feature.

This is probably the weirdest question I've heard about tuning boxes!  What do you have in mind exactly?

No, the coasting feature wouldn't be disabled but isn't it anyway the major benefit of driving in ECO?

Hahah let me explain. My wife is the main driver on the superb and she complains about the delayed throttle  response. So hoping a tuning box will improve the throttle response without changing the characteristic of eco mode. My wife hates the sport mode so not looking for something that would make eco mode more sporty but just more direct with pedal response.

Sorry for confusion, I’m not looking  to disable coasting. It’s a very useful feature which she uses often.  Just making sure a tuning box won’t impact that.

Ok that's clear. In this case you don't need a tuning box (that would add power but you'd still suffer from the same delayed throttle response).

What you need is a pedal box (DTUK offers one too). That would solve all your throttle complaints.

Before you do that though it's worth trying the "Audi mod" if you got OBDEleven/VCDS or can find someone close to you to program it. Definitely brings some improvement although not as half as what the pedal box brings, but on the other hand it's completely free...

That’s where I was going wrong, I thought tuning box and pedal box were different names for the same thing. Thanks, really appreciate it. Might give the Audi response a try before going for a pedal box.

A custom engine map is the best in terms of reliability but will invalidate your engine warranty and gearbox.!  worth bearing in mind if you are considering altering the performance of your vehicle.

Whenever I hear "custom" remap followed by "stage 1"....  :dull:   At least he didn't have to pay extra for this "customization" so fair play to the tuner there.

Bigfish are a well regarded tuners and the owner, John is very clued up and seems a nice guy too.   They've been operating for quite a while and have a great reputation on most VW group forums as well with other manufacturers too.

Yea they don’t quote figures and the maps are genuinely custom. Tweaked the map 3 -4 times before he was happy and let me go. Got there at half 12 and left around 4 ish. Dpf wasn’t exactly clear either so they did a forced regen o. That before they did any mapping
