What's the purpose of the Octavia 4x4?

I've got an Octavia 4x4; I never set out to buy a 4-wheel drive car but it was the best Octy estate in my budget at the time and I'm not complaining.

However, I'm just interested to know what it's capability/purpose was? For example, the Scout was clearly designed for off-roading as it featured a much higher ride height and I think had adapted suspension or something? However, the 4x4 seems to literally just be a 4-wheel drive version of the ordinary estate... does it just offer more traction when towing/on a loose surface/in snow etc or is it also capable going off-road or aimed at something else?

I wouldn't say the scout has MUCH more ground clearance...   It's only 17mm more and that is down to the tyre profile...   The 4X4 has the same raised suspension.  It also has the same drive train and, in many cases the rough road package.

 

We've had ours for 12 years now and love it...   It's just an extremely capable vehicle.  We've done some very mi!d off reading in it but, for us, the appeal was the all weather capability without all the plastic addeda and without going the full SUV route..

 

We live on the edge of the Peak District and my wife used to work on the other side of the Pennines so wanted something with all weather capability (read snow) for the bad days.

 

Nowadays we like the fact that we've never been stuck and have always managed to get to look after elderly relatives or to the hospital (my daughter has medical issues) regardless of what mother nature throws our way

That's reassuring because I'd heard elsewhere that it was an entirely standard car other than the 4 wheel drive. I do have to say that in the Lakes, earlier this year, we did the first part of Honnister (up to the slate mine) and it was absolutely flawless on the gradient. Haven't had any other chance to test it out in challenging circumstances yet!

Michelin cross climatea on mine...X duty side wall...bit harsh...brilliant grip so far through mud and deep water

 

Had a few worries to begin with but everything settled and sorted now

 

MPG is always 40-45 even fully loaded camping gear and with bikes on the roof. 

 

With remap it is embarrasingly  quick motor too 👍

Hi @MikeTheThinker, How did you get that full options list for your car? One thing that did and still does frustrate me about my experience buying my 2020 Octavia MkIII Scout in late 2020 is that I found it impossible to know exactly what feature codes the car has. Every description that I've found from Skoda or that the dealer gave me about "my" car seems to be a hodgepodge of standard features and options, so some things listed aren't really there (because my car has upgraded options), or aren't there (because they're included in the description as things that might have been optional purchases but weren't actually on the car that I bought).

So, how can I get an exact list like the one you posted here?

Having done a couple of 80 mile round trip commutes in the ice and snow in my 2wd 1.9 DSG.... I can see very much the point in the 4wd version. Mine's terrible at winter driving

Winter driving needs winter rated tyres, ie. 3PMSF symbol.
