1981 Vauxhall Chevette 1.3 L

1986 Ford Sierra 1.8 GL

1991 Ford Sierra 1.6 LX

1994 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.7TD GLS

1997 Vauxhall Vectra 2.0Di CDX

1996 Saab 9000 2.3 LPT CSE

2000 Saab 9-5 2.0 LPT SE

2004 Ford Mondeo 2.0Di Ghia X

2011 Skoda Superb 2.0TDi 4x4 Elegance

9 cars over 30 years not too bad I suppose.

Chevette weighed about the same as a tank. Sister totalled a lamp post with it.

Cavalier was decent.

Vectra was bloody awful...felt like it was assembled by Noddy & Bigears, hands down the worst motoring decision I've ever made.

Saab's were awesome, wish I'd kept the 9000 longer.

All manual up to the DSG Superb...4.5 years, 70k on & not regretted the purchase for one second. Only the Saabs came close.

Passed my test in the instructors 1.3 Chevette. The clutch was bloody awful, stalled it many times. Instructor was called Wally yet I passed 1st time.

Learnt to drive in an Austin Mini, about 1989, forget all other specs. Passed in January 2005 and had no car for a number of months, being a poor student.

1. 2006 - 94 Ford Escort 1.4 cheap as chips - about £500 IIRC - and £10 used to get me between Birmingham and Cardiff at the weekend and the rest of the week around town.

2. 2008 - Y Reg Ford Puma 1.6. Brilliant car and great fun. Bought off my sister in law. Engine died 6 months later, put a reconditioned one in. That died 13 months later (just out of warranty).

3. 2009 - 57 Reg Skoda Octavia 1.9tdi Elegance. Replaced the Puma, baby was due in 3 months so needed a dad car anyway. Fantastic car, did about 90k in it over 7ish years.

4. 2016 - 66 Reg Nissan Qashqai 1.5dci. First ever new car. It was fine but never really loved it and after the Octy it always felt small. Written off by a drunk driver on Good Friday this year, leaving me with no car for 3 months while I waited for...

5. 2019 - 19 Reg VW Arteon 1.5tsi Elegance DSG. Had it 7 days and been abroad on holiday for 3 of them but I love it.

Not a very exciting history!

No wonder you have no money (unless you are a Taxi driver) if you have covered 149,000 miles in the last 4 years.:o

Funnily enough Ken, that car saved my life!  I was t-boned by a lad in a fiesta and the old tank is the reason I'm still here.  It may not have been the most exotic of cars but it's got a special place on the list for that reason.

Well, reliable for values of "never actually failed to proceed" and that testimony are the only good things I could say about them and the Montego. And yes I have driven fairly new examples (my Dad's and company cars).

I didn't really have it long enough to find out if it was reliable or not. Having said that, my dad had a 1.6 Montego and it was one of the most unreliable cars he's ever owned.

Out of the others on my list, the only car that let me down was the 2.8i Capri.  It had a mystery fault that meant it may or may not start, depending on which way the wind was blowing.  Other than that, all the others were very reliable cars.

1972 Austin 1300 Van Den Plas (First car)

1973 Renault 16TL (very versatile, unfortunately developed a habit of changing into reverse at 40mph)

1976 Ford Cortina Mk3 1.6XL (Pile of poo - same colour too, gutless, handled like a barge, but it was cool at the time, or so I thought)

1979 FIAT 132 2.0 (Favourite car)

1981 FIAT 132 2.0

1982 Opel Ascona 1.6S (Heard a loud 'boom' while sat in it at Pevensey traffic lights - found out later that it was the bomb that killed Ian Gow)

1982 FIAT 132 2.0 (Tried to kill me three times)

1984 Nissan Bluebird 2.0 SGL (Fantastic car)

1981 FIAT 132 2.0 (the proverbial rust bucket.  Rusted so quickly I couldn't save it)

1990 Honda Civic 1.4 (Best holiday car, three door and touring northern France with two young kids in 2001)

1989 VW Golf GTI Mk2 16v (got me into ClubGTI)

1996 Honda Accord 2.0

1999 VW Passat 1.9TDI Estate (Great family car, got me into UKPassats)

2001 Saab 9-5 2.3 HOT Aero (projectile - favourite car moment; Dad's response from the passenger seat on a fast overtake; 'Jeeeeesuzzzz!!' 😎)

1981 VW Golf Mk1 1.5

1992 Honda CRX Del Sol (First cabby - brilliant summer fun, and oddly astonishingly good in snow and ice)

DO you remember the registration at all? My dad had one that would generally conform to this description, MGB ???P.

SGC 482 R - I'm quite surprised that I can remember the majority of car number plates I've owned, just maybe not all the cars though!

OK so here goes with my list of cars owned in 34 years...  just 8, of which I still have 3...

1982 Vauxhall Chevette 1.3l in pea green (inside and out!) - bought with money in a year out after finishing A-levels and before going to University.  I added big speakers and a stereo tape deck as well as go-faster red stripes that didn't work!  Had it a couple of years then bought my sisters Nova off her when she tradered it for a Nova SR.

1983 Vauxhall Nova 1.2 GL in silver - they only made them for a short while in GL spec and it had the SR dashboard with rev counter and other guages.  The sills rusted so they were cleaned off with a disc grinder and painted in hammerite silver.  I also added a better stereo and some huge driving lights on the front as well as a red pinstripe (that didn't work either!).  Had it a couple of years.

1990 Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 GLX in dark Twilight Blue - bought new with lots of extras - metallic paint, sunroof, uprated stereo, cross spoke alloy wheels.  I added fog lights.  I eventually sold it to my girlfriend (Now wife) when I bought a Mazda MX5 and between us we had it 11 years.

1995 Mazda MX5 Mk1 1.8 iS in Laguna Blue - bought at three years old in 1998 and I still have it 21 years later.  It's had a lot of extras added in that time including cosmetic bits plus intake, stainless exhaust and Koni adjustables and its still a great drive to the extent I can't see me ever replacing it.

2001 Skoda Fabia 1.9TDi Comfort Estate in red - bought new to replace the Mitsubishi and kept pretty much bog standard.  We kept it 13 years in the end until my father changed his Civic and we had that off him.  I believe it's still going strong up in the North East somewhere.

2007 Skoda Octavia 2.0TDi 4x4 Estate in Anthracite Grey - bought as an ex-dealer car with lots of extras at a few months old.  We still have it 12 years later, it's still going strong and is a fantastic all-weather machine.

2005 Honda Civic 2.2ctdi Sport in silver - this was my father-in-laws car that we bought off him after he got a new Civic tourer.  A great engine in a futuristic shaped body but with trim and ancillary electrics that weren't up to the same quality as the mechanicals and kept breaking.  It was sold when I bought the Swift.

2017 Suzuki Swift 1.0 Boosterjet SZ5 SHVS hybrid in Burning Red.  This was bought a year old with next to no mileage from a dealer that had used it as a showroom car so it has quite a few extras.  So far it's a great little thing!
