Would have taken a few brave pills to predict a Ferrari finishing 2nd and a McLaren 3rd with the extra point for Fastest Lap for Lando.

So @BigJase88 how about that? 😄

Ocon 8th and 4 points for Renault in his first drive for his new team.

Yes wasn't he bloody awful, trundling about at the back whilst Daniel was challenging for decent points .

8th out of 20 (with 9 retirements) is just not what Ocon is supposed to be about.

Given that RBR have set the precedent as to how this season's gonna be, I'm hoping to hear of a Mercedes appeal.

After all, Hamilton had full lock on and so couldn't go any further to the right when Albon ran into him. (according to Toto).

But on a lighter note, as they say in Eurovision:

Red Bull - ZERO POINTS

And currently sitting last in the constructors for good measure.

Like I said Karma. Will Mercedes follow the same pit stop tyre tactics next week knowing they are sitting ducks on hard tyres that have done too many laps or do they go for a more aggressive 3 stop pitstop?

If the safety car wasn't used the Mercedes would have managed the tyres OK. Hamilton wanted the mediums at his stop, but team politics dictated that he would have the hard tyres.

McLaren-Renault fastest race lap of the Austrian GP, bring on next weekend.  Extra point too !

Might need to pickup from Sky or Google Norris fastest lap as F1 or Sky are blocking some content.

Since they are way faster than RBR they might well go for mediums in Q2, assuming the same tyre compounds are available next week.

What was it a 1.07 or something? These hybrid cars just never race flat out do they?

Pole was a 1.02 I believe?

These guys have for years now just been driving for tyre life. Anyone on fresh tyres at the end can have a pop at FL - even the Williams and Haas can lap at 1.04.

Toyota got thrown out of the WRC for years for cheating the engine regs.

Ferrari, not even a slapped wrist.

Lando doing the fastest lap of the Austrian GP was exactly the same time as Max did last year to get the fastest lap award ie 1.07 475.

Max did it on lap 60 where as Lando, of course, did it on the last lap which he has to do to beat Lewis and get on the podium.

What would be very interesting for me to know was how much fuel Lando had left after all those safety car instances, I suspect he had quite a few kilograms left.

F1 cars lap time is clearly so dependent on all up weight and it would be an interesting to know the weights cars finish the race at so we can compare that to qualifying weights.

I think using all of one's full charged KERS for that banzai lap is also key.

Lando earning that extra point makes the table a bit sweeter for the Brit in a British car albeit with a French engine.

Bit of a stretch calling a New Zealand founded, Bahraini owned race team British, but I suppose they still enter under a British flag. As opposed to British based Mercedes and RBR which are entered as foreign teams. ;)

Alonso set to be announced at Renault for 21 & 22. :0

I just love that the group makes British cars we in the UK can be proud of unlike Mercs which have tended to leave me cold and we sometime move McLarens all over the world and it stirs the heart, same for Aston Martin Lagonda cars and I am sad that AML have started to use Merc engines, same with Morgan using BMW engines, a sad day but understandable in these times.  Hopefully the move to full EV will change that.

Ferrari to bring forward the new mods to Austria mk 2 race, hopefully another exiting weekend of racing.

Alonso back to Renault. Remember someone said that it would never happen 😉

I am completely amazed. Its not a top team now. It isn't going to be a top team in the near/medium future. What interest could it possibly hold for him unless he's skint.

I reckon Renault is about 5th or 6th fastest at the moment and has not really made any progress since they re-purchased it in 2015.

It was actually far more competitive during private ownership in 2012 /13 than it has ever been as a works team (since Alonso's 2006 title).

Kimi and Romain gained 24 podiums over 2 seasons including 2 wins!

Certainly a surprise unless Renault have promised to make a car so he can try another crack at the Indy 500 (I'm joking). He is partial to a magic trick so he maybe able to pull a rabbit out of the new FIA rules or simply get his new team mate to crash into all his rivals AKA Nelson Piquet Jnr gate.

When McLaren go to Merc engines they will be right up there. Maybe Alonso left too soon

What does this mean for Seb? Retirement? He is rubbish to be fair, another Seb spin at the weekend there.

I don't believe Vettel would have considered Renault. Would Mercedes take him over Bottas? Probably not on current form.

I think Vettel's only hope of a decent drive could be if this year's RedBull doesn't improve quickly enough and Max does a bunk to Mercedes as a result.

If Max didn’t retire at the weekend there then i think he would of won. Was looking good

i think i would rather have Bottas over Vettel, doesn’t make anywhere near the mistakes Vettel does.

Do Red Bull see a future for Vettel with them despite him openly chatting to them recently when Albon is so young and has so much potential that Lewis has crashed into him twice now trying to fend him off.:mmm:

Something I've not seen people discuss much, either here on in reports of the race was something that David Coulthard said during the C4 commentary

when Lewis go handed his 5 second penalty, DC suggested Mercedes should get Bottas to let Hamilton pass, then allow him to build up a gap of the right size (whilst holding up the rest of the pack)  so that at the end of the race Bottas would still be 1st and Hamilton could get second, rather than slipping down the order.

- too soon for team orders?

- if Lewis wants past, let him try it ?

- would never work because you can't trust Lewis not to build a bigger gap?

- would never work because you can't trust Bottas to hold the others up ?

- too many other possible factors (risk of Bottas being overtaken by others)

- just a stupid idea showing how biased DC is towards lewis / against Bottas ?

That's a very good point and I didn't even consider that tactic allowing Hamilton to win by 4 seconds from Bottas and then take the penalty to maximise the team points.

Mercedes(Wolff) stated that they considered it but as pointed out by @Wet Kipperit was too complex a scenario given the issues with the cars and everyone else being on fresh rubber.

Interesting that Bottas did a really slow penultimate lap to push Hamilton down to 4th place though. Clever.

...and if he is now that clever a driver, was his Q3 mistake, running in front of Hamilton, really a mistake?
