Infotainment System Restarting endlessly

It is definitely not the case with 2020 Octavias.

If you'd follow other boards and social media groups, you'd see there are a lot of troublesome cars and still (4 years later) a lot of cars with old software (even pre 18xx).

What do u mean troublesome cars.

What would worry me is if the infotainment was restarting it be very hard to prove to dealer unless they can do it. It be a waste of time and probably charge a diagnostic fee for looking at it for 5 mins. And I'd be living with it for a few yrs

  • I had so many spontaneous reboots this week with even 4 occurring on the same day that the infotainment system was practically unusable. That’s why I decided to go ahead and install 1941 yesterday.

I have Octavia IV mk2024, which I bough 2 months ago (pre-facelift model). I have experienced infotainment crash several times (Columbus went into restarting loop, most of the sensors became faulty until I restarted the car). I can't be 100% sure, but I think it is related to overheating. This summer was really hot in my country (more than 35 C during the whole summer), for a last few weeks temperature wasn't above 25 C and I had zero issues with infotainment in this period.

Luckily in uk It never reaches 35c wouldn't the AC cool down the infotainment

It reached 40C in some parts of the UK last summer, and a few years ago I saw 36C on the M3 between Winchester and Southampton.

Ye spose ur right its probably alot hotter in car too when sitting

The heat could be generated by the sun light, coming through the windscreen, and heating up the back of the infotainment screen leading to crashing of the system?

Could use your smartphone to video the restarts - I have proven its usefulness in demonstrating issues to the dealer.

When working on a noise cancellation system for car interiors, we saw temperatures as high as 80C on the interior headlining in sunny parts of the southern USA.

If you're buying through your local(ish) Škoda dealer then all the software updates should be applied, plus a bunch of other stuff...

Being armed with the info as to what updates to expect is important. The post from @spcdust in the thread about red flags is a good resource.

Not buying through a dealer though, that's the thing. All I know is the car is just under 4 years old, has just over 29k miles and only 1 previous owner. The price I paid seemed quite good until I started to read these forums, if only I'd done so before committing...

I wouldn’t stress, reading the forum paints a disproportionately bleak picture.  You might be totally fine, the previous owner may have diligently had some or all updates done.  If you got a good deal and you do find that some software / firmware updates are ultimately required you can get them done and at least you know it can all be fixed through these updates.  Whilst the forum may have spooked you at least you are informed.

I find the car very sound, I get good mpg and drives very well and I like the tech that the Mk4 comes with.  All-in-all it’s a great family, with dog, car.

Another reason I chose the Octavia is because I had family visiting from abroad this past summer, 2 adults, 2 (almost) teenagers and a month's worth of luggage which they hauled all around the UK in a hired one which seemed a cracking car. I had a ride out in it too a couple of times and really liked it, as did my Brother-in-law who put a good couple of thousand miles on it during that time.

I have the 1.5TSI SEL Manual Estate - First Edition and really rate the car.  No denying that Skoda dropped the ball, in terms of software, when they initially released the MK4 but, at this stage, the issues the Mk4’s initially suffered seem to have been resolved via software updates.

To give some context, other car manufacturers also seem to struggle with the onboard software they have.  End of day all of them are car manufacturers and not software developers.

GIven the complexity of the computer networks that we now drive on the road (in the old days we used to call them cars) then if the 'car manufacturers' are not willing to become 'software developers' then you have to ask whether they should be manufacturing mobile computer networks (sorry cars).

I agree - they have put all this on board tech in their cars but seem to be playing catch up in terms of support and ensuring the installed systems are robust.  It’s not like a mobile phone or tablet OS having a bug which is generally, at worse, irritating.

Have u updated it ?

Got my car back today with a fully updated infotainment system running 1969.

No glitches seems a bit slower, but smoother.

Got it with 1969 sw.

The issue happened few times when I left my car in an shopping mall garage (in very hot environment due to many AC pumping hot air into it).

Picked the car up today, took it for a good ride out, it's a lovely drive! No noticeable software glitches (thank goodness!) however I did note that I'm running software version 1896, and from what I've read on here the maps database looks way out of date (19.6 or something like that)

There are a couple of updates ready to install, but not sure I'm going to bother, at least not just yet anyway! Does anyone know if I can check what the updates are without committing to installing them?

Unfortunately, no.
As well, 1896 was known to get one specific OTA update which was sending it into a crash loop. Idk if it is still being pushed to the cars though, but I'd ignore any updates as long as I could before getting 1941 or above.

The updates were sitting waiting when I first checked the system so I'd say the previous owner must have left them well alone, and for now that's exactly what I intent to do too.

Signed up for a free trial of Skoda Connect and D/L'd a copy of my digital certificate, made for interesting reading (see attached)

Could it be the Octavia I've bought has already had it's telematics done and unit replaced? 🤔

I would say that’s a pretty positive indication, I believe Skoda initially did replace Telematic units on earlier models but eventually developed a module firmware fix to solve issues.  If the car software works glitch free then all well and good.  Might be good to get the infotainment software up to 1941 or 1969 but, again, if you aren’t getting any issues then no hurry for that either.

I've D/L'd the zip packages for both from here (thanks very much for those!) but as I'm not experiencing issues thus far running 1896, I'm tempted just to leave it as it is.

Although I might try and update the navigation which I grabbed from the update portal a couple of days ago, see what happens with that 😃

If you are going to do anything do 1941 first and then do 1969.

Slower incremental route but it should eliminate any possible glitches.
