Thanks a million for getting back to me.

That all seems way above my paygrade.....but thanks for trying to help.

It is a bit technical true. Assumes you got GPS knowledge and technical skills. Not helped when VAG removed their web site for POI import. The next best thing is to just photograph the screens on your old car and use that as a record for your new car to manually reconstruct it. That way you ensure you don't leave anything out.

Hi,

Stumbled upon this thread after having done numerous searches for updating the maps on my MIB1 unit in my Audi A3 from 2016.

I was able to locate that it was a MIB1 unit through the serial number, but that's also where it pretty much ends.

Questions:

It says "MIB1/MIB2" in the head line here for the downloadable maps and the information shared.

It says that it's cross compatible with "Audi MMI Navigation Plus (Mib2H) - but here it mentions Mib2H, but no mention of the Mib1.

Are these maps truly compatible with my Mib1 unit?

If so, can the update of the maps be performed without doing a firmware update first of the MMI, or could you direct me to a place where I could update the firmware for the MMI?

(most likely wouldnt hurt, as I think none of it was ever updated since the birth of the car)

Hope you can help with a bit more information.

Best regards,

Thomas

This one has come up before. Mib1 is before my time. Only had mib2. One of your issues with Audi is they are like Seat they don't give you life long navigation FeCs unlike VW and Skoda so they wish to sell you the map update rather giving it you free. These updates. For Audi and Seat mib2 high units you can update the life long FeC yourself if technically skilled these days or take it to a retrofitter. That software is designed for mib2 highs.

Your other problem is you have a mib1 whilst it's a shared download I believe to get it into the unit it goes in via DVD. I had thought it was SD. But past conversation here where we head scratch on history, concluded it's a two layer DVD which normal DVD writers don't do. The moderator of this thread is versed in the subject. So even if the files are common between mib1 and 2 you would have technical issues getting them in, let alone the Audi navigation FeC.

So basically you are a bit stuffed. If it was a mib2 high Audi unit you can embark on using the mib2 high toolkit to write a life long navigation thread then you can do the map update (seems quite common now) but afraid you fall at two hurdles.

For mib2 high on Audi people arrive on this thread looking at Mr Fixit video. One being this one:

Mention that for completeness. In that instance they got the navigation FeC via the software but didn't get the paid traffic reports. That's outside of the navigation FeCs for Audi. Fixed the first issue thou.

Bit more reading on the problem above. It seems at the time they used the SWDL menu that I use now. For Audi the warning would be the navigation FeC. Thus if you forced the update that way you would delete the current maps but if it's anything like mib2 high without valid navigation FeCs it would time out and blank the screen. Been there done that. You would only experiment if you had a copy of the original map then you can revert back. That's what I had to do back in 2017 when I messed my unit up since Seat's unlike Skoda arent delivered with life long FeCs.

It could be that the FeCs were not deployed like this in mib1 highs. Pass on that but that's how they did in on Skodas. I have seen something similar on VW Mib1 which is why back in 2017 I experimented with the SWDL menu. It forces an update but came stuck on the navigation FeCs. Had to educated myself on that after. The engineering menu is locked down on mib2 highs you enable the developers menu via coding. On mib1 it was never locked down. Hence that thread shows them doing it that way.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for your detailed response, and sorry for the lack of response from my side - there was a bit to comprehend, for one being all new to this - normally just used to driving the car 😉

You might be right on the DVD part, - I see that it has both the DVD player and two SD card slots in the passenger storage compartment.

I have no copies of an original map, so can't revert back if things goes sideways, sadly.

From the last few replies in the last mail thread that you shared, it sounds as if I potentially could update with the use of VCDS, but with the rather high costs associated with that solution (and obtaining that cable), I think I'll restrain from that for now.
I had really just hoped that there would have been an easier solution :)

Thanks a lot still.

There are a few reliable retrofitters in the country that know about these things. East Yorkshire Retrofit is one. This guy is their specialist. He's sorted out fair few Seat people who have messed up their units by meddling with the software. If local that's an option. He might say don't bother.

Thanks for the tip. Sadly not a local, from Denmark.

Will try to reach out to some of the local retrofitters, and see what they have to say.

Have a nice day and thanks for all your help, it's appreciated.

Are the map upgrade files pinned in this thread the correct ones for a Columbus MIB2.5 (the one with the touch sensitive buttons rather than the hard buttons) - is this what 'High' refers to?

Columbus means it's a high. The maps are held on an SSD rather than SD. If you stab away at the media button and see "Juke box" it's a high. The spare SSD space is offered up for a juke box. That's the easy check. Think you know if you had a mib3. The 2.5 was an interim unit but all the same download for the mib2 high which is the generic name between VAG brands. Different firmware, same map update. Mib2 standard is otherwise called an Amundsen in Skoda naming. That's the one with the map card.... the other thread. The high is the RR one. Uses Here Maps cartography. Amundsen uses Tom Tom cartography. The screens in that aren't executed so well on roundabout. Slower to react but does.

Thanks. Yes I know it is a Columbus MIB2.5 and the maps are stored internally rather than on SD, just wanted to check that this is the correct update for that variant.

John,  that's the name. What you need on each release is to note the new release on the old thread (like here) so followers get the nototication, the link to the new thread and tell John to get it pinned.

Anyhow all very good. I see the mib3 ones get posted up on an Italian Leon thread. I guess there will be a similar interest in these. You don't fancy finding those similarly ?. Example the forth post down on here:

https://forum-auto.caradisiac.com/topic/468096-mises-à-jours-logiciel-leon-4/page/49/

For those out of contract on mib3 connect services they can do a similar update. Now tested on Seats. Looking at the Seat and Skoda web pages of their links they were old whilst the VW was up-to-date to the last November release. Needs your program twigged for sniffing out these.

Mib3 VW one for that was

The Italian guy has published the series to this one there, other than that you register with the VW site and check.

Did you use a Mac for the download ?. Macs leave a load of Mac generated rubbish in the file which causes the validation of files to fail if you presented them incorrectly. Happy go lucky Mac users fall into this trap. You download with Keka, copy to the SD card then run CleanMyDrive on the SD card, then insert it into the unit.

Failing that its a presentation issue. See the manual posted on the other threads, can't get one uploaded at the minute. Failing that if it's it's not a Skoda or VW then it will be your navigation FeCs. They need to be long FeC.

I'm sorry.

My auto ist the Skoda Octavia(2018) mk III.

I did everything under Windows.

Thanks

This thread isn't for the latest maps so you need the 330 release see below if you haven't found it but that isn't your technical issue.

The instructions I was talking about are here, my 11th November post, the VW how to PDF. The gold standard:

So your issue will be a presentation issue only of not presenting the update as expected (You have a mib2 high, tick, a Skoda so not a navigation FeC issue, tick, using Windows so not a Mac issue tick). That leaves not unzipped or at the wrong directory level down in how it's presented etc (see PDF in thd link). Also good to pull other cards out so it only sees the media.

You are suppose to use 7zip for the unzip process. Others can give a problem. Basically the unit reads the files and checks the integrity of the files from the signatures and checksum. If they don't pass it won't see the update. Not in the correct level is another - see the PDF, not unzipped correctly, or not using a valid file system, Fat32 for the 32gb card, exFat for above cards, or NTFS for USB and it wont work. Those are the outstanding issues to check.

Suppose to be in Fat32, 32gb SD card but the maps have outgrown some cards, you use say 64gb in exFat if that's the case or USB in NTFS (That isn't in the instructions above). I mention that if after using the latest you find they wont fit on the card.

I did use to say only stick to the 32GB card but since the maps have expanded above what some 32GB cards can handle now, you can get issues if you don't get the file system right for exFat on big SD cards or NTFS for USB. So that was the other issue people hit.

The latest maps are here:

Release 330. Your 166 you see on the screen will become 330 when successful. They are the June 2023 release found early by MartiniB in April. I think poster drifted threads at this point so you might be using the latest or may be not. The Mod John needs to pin that thread above and un-pin this one so people find the latest at the top else people grab the wrong files.

Hi,

I've followed all the rules, e.g. 32GB SD card, Fat32 format. I have downloaded the files (one text file, one MIB 1 folder, one MIB 2 folder). I have a 2015 Superb Mk2 with a Columbus MIB2. I assume I just switch on the Columbus unit with the car ignition off, inset the SD card and follow whatever prompts appear on the screen to enable the unit to upload the latest maps for the UK and Europe.

I'm not a techie person but as far as I can see from this thread, it should be fine for me to just go ahead with the update.

Are there any other caveats? It appears that, if the update fails for any reason, my exisitng map data (factory installed) will be lost forever. Skoda no long support the Columbus unit, so there's no prospect of a dealer fixing it.

If the update fails, what are the options for fixing the satnav, apart from thowing it away and spending stupid money on a new one?

Thanks.

You do assuming you have as you say a Mib2 high which is the Columbus MIB2, click update or whatever.... the confusing thing is the mod who pins these map update thread hasn't pinned the June 2023 release which was published in April 2023 by MartiniB:

and then to add to this if you want to go experimental and use the November 2023 release which has been "found" then it's here

Guest and guest is the login and password on the mibsolutions link.

330 is the last official release, 335 is the one being talked about recently on bottom of that thread at the moment.
