  1. If you are a skilled professional you have to work where the jobs are, when I headed a department of 60 professional telecoms engineers in Surrey over 50% of them had moved from north of Birmingham because there were no jobs in that profession in places other than the South such as the Thames Valley and Cambridge. They had to adapt their location to meet their employment needs not vice versa.
  2. When still working I looked into commuting by bus instead of driving. The problem was that bus routes were all radial from the town centres so to get to work meant 3 buses taking nearly 2 hours (because of poor connections) and 3 bus fares. Driving took 20 minutes most days (more when there was an accident on the motorway) and fuel cost of less than 20%. But it was 4 hours per day instead of 40 minutes per day that was the deciding factor!
  3. It's a real drawback that the price we pay for electricity is linked to the world price for natural gas, it seems without good reason as so little of our electricity is produced by burning gas (at the moment according to grid.iamkate.com it's 26.7%). Then when you take into account the upfront costs of switching from a gas boiler to a heat pump (even allowing for the very mean grants available) it's not something that many homeowners can afford to do. If there really is a climate emergency then there need to be MUCH better grants for the majority to install heat pumps, solar cells, battery storage, etc. Until that happens I for one will have to stick with my gas combi boiler and 100% usage of grid electricity.
  4. I meant resolution, but thanks for the clarification.
  5. MIB1 screens have a different screen refresh rate to MIB2 screens and glovebox units - so using a MIB1 screen with a MIB2 glovebox unit doesn't work.
  6. They're both VWs, I don't think the screen won't fit an Octavia as the shape/size is different.
  7. Basics question - is there a separate relay? Quite often on modern cars the power is switched by a semiconductor in the module - the cue will be the rating of the fuse that supplies the module, a small rating probably means it powers on ly the module but a higher rating means it powers the load (in this case the fan) as well. Sounds like you need a wiring diagram - which someone here might have and can share?
  8. The proposed mine in Cumbria is intended to only produce coke which is still needed for some industrial processes in the UK, as it will be several (many?) years before all those processes can change to no longer need coke (will the alternatives have other environmental impacts though?). If we don't produce coke locally then those companies will need to import it, and the most likely producer is Australia. So we need to balance the impact of producing locally against the impact of shipping coke halfway round the world on ships that are very likely fuelled by the most polluting fossil fuel, heavy oil.
  9. Bluetooth is fine for basic use of the phone via the infotainment, but CarPlay offers so much more access to the iPhone features. I use wireless CarPlay as I couldn't be bothered with a USB cable, so the iPhone stays in my jacket pocket.
  10. The cutoff point for new maps is 5 years after that infotainment system was last used in VAG production.
  11. So post in the Superb Mk3 forum where fellow owners can help you https://www.briskoda.net/forums/forum/299-skoda-superb-mk3-2015-2023/
  12. I think you should post this in the forum relating to whatever car it is that you own, at the moment it's so generic it's impossible to give a sensible answer as there are so many steering systems on Skodas.
  13. The last time I took my previous car to a dealer was when it was not quite 3 years old, they told me I needed new front discs and pads, after servicing and MOTs at a trusted independent VAG specialist 7 years and 50,000 miles later I sold it still with the original front discs and pads!
  14. Battery level and signal strength of paired mobile phone.
  15. There are just 2 circumstances when I turn off stop/start: 1) when at a junction or roundabout with heavy traffic and only small gaps, so the delay for the engine to restart makes it impossible to safely get into the gap 2) when in a traffic queue that keeps stopping and restarting every few seconds
  16. It seems that the grid operator in Spain warned some months ago that with 70% of their power coming from renewables, especially solar, the network lacked the inertia inherent in mechanical generators to cope with sudden changes in demand - so it seems they were warning that such a grid collapse could happen.
  17. If one coilpack is dodgy then I would change all 4 as the others might not be far behind.
  18. Please post a screenshot of your friends infotainment system showing the software version.
  19. Please explain why/how you think there is an update numbered 2035 - with either a link or a picture preferably?
  20. If you don't have a GPS that shows speed then timing the distance posts on the sides of a motorway can also be a useful way for a PASSENGER to check the difference between indicated and actual speed
  21. I was under the impression that the "grace value" used by UK Police has been 5% plus 1.5mph for several years now?
  22. VCDS Owners Map List of VCDS Owners
  23. I mean one that properly understands VW Group vehicles and their specific fault codes, not just the generic OBD fault codes.
  24. No idea, I use VCDS and a Windows 11 2-in-1 laptop but lots of people on here use OBDeleven.
  25. Do you have a friend with either OBDeleven or VCDS - they give a much more in depth report?
