but... powwwwwaaaaa!!! lol

Still waiting for the intercooler pipes to come! :wall: and im bored shartless! So i decided to mutilate my head lights. its something i wanted to do since i got the car as im not a fan of chrome. Im planning on doing my LEDs this week (taxi G) also as i have the rest of the week off! woop!

So for now, heres a mini how to for "satin Black headlights"

Tools needed..

Some bottle <<< this is the most important one.

Standly knife

Heat gun

Patience

Paint and plastic prima

1500 grit Sand pater

mini torx bits

Flat blade screw drivers.

This is how i done it, it may be right, it may be wrong. It worked for me, it mite not for you. It aint my fault if you try and it goes Tits up hmmmkayy! :sun:

remove Both head lights from car, There is 4 torx screws holding it in. 2 on the inner edge of the head light (next to the grill) 1 on top, and 1 behind the indicator.

Once removed, Clean them up best you can, this saves mess later.

IMAG2108.jpg

Remove both rear covers on back of the cluster, remove any bulbs Hid ballast etc.

I found removing all attachments worked well the second time round. The first light i did i left them all attached and broke 1 of the clips on the back of the light for the Electronic adjusters. Luckly this glued back on! There are 2 small torx to remove from the adjuster and it just wiggles out.

IMAG2102.jpg

2 more for the top adjusters, just unscrew and it saves knocking your adjustments out.

1 just just above the projector

IMAG21041.jpg

the other in the opposite corner.

now thats all free you need to heat up the plastic without melting it, but hot enough to make the glue all soft. i warn you now.... 1 head light was a pig, the other was easier. so what you have is all on luck!

Heat on the white part of the head light, just behind the clear plastic..

IMAG2110.jpg

follow it around the cluster.

IMAG2111.jpg

the glass (ill call it that as its simpler to decipher than plastic) is sandwiched in so you need to put alot of heat to the rear of the cluster. When its hot to the touch and trust, IT WILL BE HOT!! get your blade and start carfully scoring in the gap between the plastic and the glass.

IMAG2045.jpg

the more you heat it up yo will find your blade will eventually get down about 10mm between the plastic and the glass. Now unfortunatly even tho the outer seal has been broken, where it is sandwiched, its stuck like a godden on the inside.

This is where your bottle comes into it. You will need to use a medium sized flat blade to get between the plastic and glass. At the bottom of the head light (still with alot of heat) you will be able to pull the glass away enough to get your screw driver in there and brake the inner seal. remember keep it hot and you will be able to pull the glass away buy hand, i warn you now, its a PITA!!

once split it should look a little like this..

IMAG2049.jpg

IMAG2075.jpg

at this point you will prob want a breather... Once you have looked at your head light and though. oh my good fking god what am i doing.. Grab your 1500 grit and key up what ever bits you want to spray. I wanted to go as dark as i can, i masked off the reflective bit needed for the head light, and sprayed up all this lot!

You can see, i did my indicator as well. I have Converted them to side lights but ill show that in a sec.

When your waiting for t all to dry you will need to clean up your glass and plastic as there will be loads of sealant on them still. This is messy!

i used a flat blade screw driver and scraped it all out quite easy, as it fit in the plastics "gully" quite well..

IMAG2080.jpg

When all dry, Reverse all that ^^^ and i have orderd Tiger seal to glue it all back together. i aint got it yet so cant show u it being sealed. I have a few more bits inside my lights so keep ya eyes peeled in the next couple of days!

heres how mine looked after doing 1..

IMAG2071.jpg

before and after

IMAG2061.jpg

IMAG2070.jpg

both done..

IMAG2118.jpg

feel free to comment.. i like it, cant wait to fit them.. more to come with my indicator convertion.

  • Author

Indicator conversion.. U.S Spec style side lights.

I have fitted the Q7 LED amber strip inticators stelth behind my milotec lower grills on the bumper. (earlier in the thread) and decided on a single white LED on the indicator. Simple idea but i wanted it to look its best and last. I opted for a bit of pottyness! (litterally)

So this is how its going to look..

IMAG2072.jpg

as i say, i want it to look as OEM as poss.. so i wanted some decent plastic to mount my LED in.

1 pot..

IMAG2083.jpg

1 rough circle and an LED inserted!

IMAG2087.jpg

I will use the tiger seal to bond it to the back of the light cluster and use bullet connections so it can still be removed if needed.

led lit..

IMAG2092.jpg

theres a little bit of red comming through atm as shown

IMAG2091.jpg

so i sprayed up the new bits to sit stealth in the cluster

IMAG2094.jpg

this is the finished article .. nice and subtle :)

looks hard.. comments?

Love it :D

Looks properly mean from the front end!

Your a mentalist man ! Epicness

G

What do you use to seal them back with?

I thought SWMBO would flip at the idea of me taking my headlights apart - but to my surprise she quite liked it, so i've been given the go ahead :)

Back is screwed at moment, don't take pump off just for me mate, just write the number somewhere if you get round to it. The leon pump looks the same, just want to double check.

I did this on my Primera GT headlamps, so I know that feeling in the pit of your stomach as you start to seperate the glass well. My mate tried to do his like mine and the glass just snapped in two bits - luckily I had a spare for him. As Gee said, to anyone thinking of doing this, heat is everything, and tigerseal rules!

This car is looking serious now, I always thought Bowders car was the best silver one I had seen, but he has competition now.

that looks aggro as ****! love it dude!

this is the exact car making me want to big mouth vrs bumper the front end of mine, but i just cant make my mind up whether to do it or not :(

Awesome mate, love the black lights :) id do it if i wasnt so crap lol

You should start offering mods bud.... Make some wonga in your pocket, i bet black lights would fly off the shelf :)

looks the nuts love it dude

  • Author

funny you say that ,mate, im actually bidding on some other lights to do just that. Im also looking at some dipped beam projectors to swap over the fogs in mine. we will see. but there will be a set of black head lights for sale soon. I may do more if i had more interest. :)

haha Cheers clive :)

They would look really good on a red car :)
