Something against GS's Fubar or is it just that they are expensive?

I must admit i would like both but, she's got a point, mind you an old R80 RT would do the job just as well.

No I like GS's but I would hate to loose a car seems like blackmail especially not a Mk1 Fabia VRS! I have played that game before and regretted it great cars.

Sadly me too! took me nearly 3 years to get another one I won't be letting her go lightly, if at all.

Your suggestion of a cheaper bike might be the way to go.

I am a strong advocate of the ZZR1200 236kg 160bhp will hit its 186mph limiter with ease does 50+ MPG on a run comfy all day can tour and can be thrown about very agile for size prices are a steal find one with luggage.

Looks like I'll be taking mine to Norway next year. Plan on sending midsummer over there. Anyone been to Norway?

I agree with your basic premise, it defo makes you more aware and, I think, a better car driver, BUT.........

My oldest really wants a bike the youngest isn't interested. Swmbo wants the boy to have a couple of years in cars before he gets a bike, the bottom line is, she is scared that what happened to me (despite almost thirty five years of experience on all sorts of bikes on and off road) happens to him , or worse, and sadly, worse means dead.

If I still had a bike I think he would have met with much less resistance, however, I would also worry about him too, although before my accident I would have worried less. I would have made sure he took as much training as I could persuade him to go for. I would even have paid for it for the peace of mind it would have brought.

Still, that's all, if, but and maybe's, the only way I can see him get a bike now is if and when he leaves home and buys it himself. He will get all the help we can give him while he runs a car but I think, (I know), if he chooses a bike, he's on his own as far as Swmbo is concerned.

Fear robs you of reason and she has waited once already, not knowing which way it was going to turn out, all the comfort she got from the Doctor was, "prepare yourself for the worst" fortunately it didn't come to that, but the fear remains. I don't know how she would deal with it if it was our first born, hell I don't know how I would deal with it. This comes from a man who is desperate to get another bike too, only the other day I got a little shot on some private land of my mates CBR 900 and I WANT, no, NEED, another bike.

Ain't it $**t when you can't get what you want, just to keep the ones you love happy and sane? Never mind how miserable it makes you?

Despite my love of bikes I can see where your SWMBO is coming from - must have been scary for her. :S

I have to confess that having worked in palliative care for so long I think I might have developed a bit of a "Carpe Diem" attitude to life - further enforced by the loss of a number of my own friends from Cancer. At times I probably lose sight of the inherent dangers of motorcycling ( particularly from other road users).

It is always a hard balance - enjoying life, whilst not putting ourselves in risk situations which should the worst happen changes and negatively effects the lives of those around us.

I had a crapy week in work and Friday we close at 1pm but I had to work until nearer 5pm was a sunny day 22/23Deg C and the roads were awesomely dry. It was time to break out the Z1000SX for a wee evening ride before dusk.

Here was my wee ride through the all seeing eye of my helmet cam:

The gloves went on

gloveage.png

Bikers everywhere of all shapes and sizes making the most of it

slow%2520boys%2520wave.png

the%2520finger.png

Was a quality wee ride even explored a pavement at one point

But as always there was that normal thing of the "whoops driver" he did realise and waved in apology then moved well over to facilitate my overtake.

Hi all, just thought I'd give you an update.

The operation to fix my leg/ankle was a success although instead of the 2hrs they thought it took 4.

This has caused a few issues as the foot had major swelling after the op and this delayed me getting a full cast, which in turn delayed my release, but I am now home.

I had a feeling the injuries where bad but had no idea just how bad, basically I have shattered the joint where the Tib and Fib form the socket that the ankle sits in, they have rebuilt it s best they can but some of the bone was so smashed it was beyond use. To add to this I snapped about an inch of the Fib clean off and have a spiral fracture up the Tib. Also I have broken the ankle too.

They think that it will be 3 to 6 months before I can walk again unaided and up to a year before I can ride if at all.

It really depends on recovery and how much feeling and movement I get back.

Still I should be able to rive the VRS by Christmas if I'm lucky, here's hoping.

Oh no, it's worse than we thought, you've regained consciousness and started talking with a Japanese accent!

Thanks for the update. If it helps, I've got a number of friends that have had similarly serious accidents and reconstruction, and all of them are either substantially fixed or well on the way.

The rate of repair various wildly, but I've repeatedly been astonished by the body's ability to recover from significant trauma.

If anything, as a result of all the cycling a couple of them have done, they've ended up far fitter and mobile than pre accident

cheers............I'll be fine I'm sure.

I intend on getting on the push bike as quick as I can to regain some fitness and loose some weight I'm bound to put on.

I'm going to use the time I have once i'm able to weight bare to get the ZX10R all cleaned up and some of it re powder coated, then sort out the race bike ready to get out on a blast at the earliest opportunity!

I'll keep you all posted as I make progress as well.

Cheers for update good news that they were able to do something with the damage there are some very skilled doctors out there. You will be up and about in no time before I was able to put my foot on ground I moved my ZZR1400 around the yard and rode it up onto its trailer ready to do one. I set myself goals on when I wanted to be able to do things like walk they told me 6 months ish after operation then after further complications that was extended but I was able to move around without crutches by Christmas which I said I wanted to do. I have had other goals like driving car riding bike etc and once you get to one be it on time or not then you are at lot closer to the next etc.

Next is trying to get date for next operations was hoping last week or this week but not happened, need it done soon as im on my own here over Christmas and will have absolutely no one to help me and more than likely at this rate wont be able to walk or drive so will have to stock up and lock the door!

Oh dear, should I 'fess up?

OK, I started out as a school boy with a BSA C15. It was orange with clip ons and a speedo in an alloy box insulation taped to the top of the forks. I then progressed through a variety of unit singles, Bantams and pre unit singles (you might have noticed a theme has developed here).

They were slightly reliable but eminently repairable! Over the years they have taken me across Europe and to work most days until I retired in March. Now days it tends to be trailered to Europe behind the Octavia as the wife doesn't like riding (it's a joint thing)

Attached (if it works) are a couple of pictures. One from Bergen in 2006 (the Bantam did 900 miles around Norway before the engine blew up in Yorkshire on the way back) and Brooklands this year

Sorry, can't find a way of uploading the pictures either as a file or into the reply. You will just have to imagine them!

There are free websites like www.imageshack.us that you can use to upload the pics to then share on here with us sounds like they would be worth seeing!

Cool list of bikes  Assume you mean the Suzuki X5 ? - always wanted one, but at the time could only afford an old SB 200 - hideous thing ( 4 gears and front drum :o )

Did ride a Fazer 600 a couple times , but decided that I was lethal on it  - now riding a Gladius which to be honest suits my height and riding style much better :)

Some cheap deals on Versys 650's etc with hand guards, heated grips luggage the works bargain wee all rounder be alright for commuting.

That's the bike i have been looking at to replace the GS but ended up changing my 525 estate for a octavia estate instead when it failed the MOT.

The 650 looks good but had my eye on the 1000 when that came out.

Maybe next year, still 89000 on the bike is not bad and 204000 on the 525 before heading for scrape is going well

I have looked at the 1000 when it came out this year but not been overly impressed there are a few other bikes out there that already do the job well. The 1000 is a big old bus too and has the weight you'd expect I would go for a GS over one any day. I just got a new Z1000SX I was considering the Versys 650 but Z1000SX had free upgrade to tourer spec from Kawasaki still do I think! So did the Versys 650. Would not see the 1000 as a commuter myself a lot of weight to throw between cars switching lanes etc. Someone on a biker forum I am on just got a Versys 650 and was a BMW rider a mint RT1150 ironically and seems to be really impressed by it weight etc.
