Topcot2006: how do you find the 1150gs then?

My dad had (amount loads of other bmw's) the 1150gs, then a 2004 1200gs, and now a 2012 GSA.

He reckons the 1150 was the most solid of the lot. The new ones obviously faster and what not, but reckons the 1150 is the best made of the bunch.

He'd have one tomorrow if he could still buy a brand new one.

I've had now an 1100GS and a 1200GSA and prefer the 1150 as it is better made. I bought my SE back from the guy I sold it too after a chance meeting when testing the new WC.

Hmm. Seems bmw's build is getting worse doesnt it! Cant fault the 1150 but the build quality sort of goes down hill from there on.

The new 1200gs is worse again!

Apparently the gearbox clunk has been rectified on the new ones though. So thats one good thing.

It wasn't rectified on the one I test drove! And I test rode the new RT too and that clunked. If anything the clunk seemed worse than the 1150 and that's got a pretty agricultural gearbox.

The new 1200 GSA WC is however the only bike I've managed to get the pegs scraping on the floor whilst cornering.

I'd have one if it wasn't so complicated! I'd like to try a Triumph Explorer - I think that may be the bike to get!

Me and the lad back from the recent Euro jaunt. Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Back to Austria, Italy, Switzerland, back to Italy and back home for tea and medals. Did most of it without any motorway, got in all the  mountain passes I wanted to get in and a Bayern Munich stadium tour, and lots of WW2 stuff including Foy / Bastogne area.  :) Just over 2200 miles in all, so not a bad run for a 12 year old. And no, new GS's are not as well built as 1150's :)

This may well be my last BMW Tom, I had the starter switch fail in Austria, which I had to bodge and then get to a friendly dealer to swap the switch out. The problem was I used a bit to much BFI on the switch after in jammed so broke it and it would sometimes kill the motor, not what I wanted on the Stelvio or Umbrail pass, so managed to get a dealer to sort it.

I like the riding position and mile munching abilities of "adventure" bikes, and do use mine all year round so I am thinking of looking at a Triumph explorer next myself, or most likely a Super 10 with a KTM 1190 adventure as a possibility.

In between many other bikes (see earlier in this thread) Ive had an 1100 GS / 1200GS / 1200GSA and now an LC GS, build quality has taken a small but noticeable dip. I love the looks of my LC, the engine is perfect, I've got the optional quickshifter which is a hoot. It's a 2014 so I've got a fairly slick gearbox (no worse than my Tiger 1050) but every second bike I saw on Stelvio / Grimsel / Furhka / Umbrail / Grossglockener / Nockalmstrasse was a GS, and many of them Watercooled. It's not a bad bike by any stretch of the imagination, it's probably the best bike I have ever owned save for that one small failure on the starter switch. The Dynamic ESA works well, Rain Mode is useful to soften throttle responses on slippery crappy mountain roads, it's all day comfortable with enough wind blast to remind me I'm on a bike and a great engine with fantastic handling (Peg's down, two up with luggage on Umbrail without a care), just to bloody many of them around.

Here's an example, I'm the first bike on the train back to Holland from Italy, what is the second bike that rolls on? Have a look carefully to the left :)

It's not only my boy that loves the bikes, his twin sister is a 2 wheeled fan to, as long as there is an Ice cream on the route. :)

2200 miles with a 12 year old riding and you taking pillion?

That is impressive! Well done him!

Must be nice to have a dad who is interested in you and enjoys spending

time with you. Mine spent my childhood beating me up and my adulthood ignoring me.

It's nice to see someone elses experience of having a dad is better than mine.

Good on you Fluffmeister. Proper job.

Urgh. Just come across a road which i know like the back of my hand.

Had a z1000 up my arse coming out of town (i dont speed in 30's). Tried to get past me out of town but ended up pulling back in behind me again.

Tried again later on and only got back in because i let him in, cos it was a bloody dangerous overtaking spot (solid white line and on a corner).

Then i spend the rest of the road following him and watching his stupid overtaking habbits and was actually holding me up in places.

Going too fast for himself so ended up taking the wrong line into corners. I dont know if he didnt know the road and he was going too fast for himself, or if he did know the road and was an even worse rider.

Absolutly appalling riding, and the worst bit is, he had his mrs on the back!

He wont be getting any lovin for weeks after spending soo long tryna kill em both.

Still pee'd off at how bad his riding was, and he only dropped into the next town 2 cars ahead of me haha.

I took a ride out in the sunshine to Glossop today, went via Woodhead Pass and came back via Snake Pass & Strines.

Fantastic scenery, glorious weather.

It was my 2nd furthest ride so far, while I enjoyed it, I did start to get a little wrist ache and fed up of struggling up all the hills
