I have some roofing repairs to do here and it's not raining yet, but its threatening.

And the roof I have to work on is wet from yesterday still.

I've just hung out some washing so that's bound to set off the rain.

Wow, if you are good with all that roof climbing Indiana Jones business, fancy getting some moss off mine? :D

You're out of my area Fubs or I'd be happy to.

I just don't ever entertain the notion that I will fall and thus far

positive thinking has kept me from hitting the deck.

I'm quite the little monkey and love climbing over things.

Back on topic, Mrs G on CBT as I type this. She's got nice weather for it today.

I'm going to go down and pick her up on the bike so she can stay in her bike kit

until she gets home.

Careful mate. Iv got a little excited on roofs before and had a few close shaves.

You soon remember how high you are when you slip dontcha haha.

How did Mrs Grrr get on?

How did Mrs Grrr get on?

It could have gone better....

It could have gone better....

She is ok though?

Yeah. She okay?

Sore knee and damaged pride mostly. She never got out on the road at all.

I got a call at 2pm to come get her and I picked her up in tears. :(

She has a relative about to die in hospital so her heads all over the place

anyway. But this was booked before we (or her relative for that matter)

knew it was cancer, it's very advanced and if the relative makes it a month from diagnosis

to exit stage left then she'll be doing well.

Back to the CBT, They were trying to rush her through it despite zero experience

on any two wheeled transport other than several hundred miles on back of mine

and about two hours riding a cycle (which I taught her to do). As a young girl she

was into horse riding in a big way so never even had a pushbike.

I was hoping she would be lucky like me and get 1 on 1 (not that I particularly needed it

but it would have been better for her) but there was another more experienced guy who

in all fairness was being held back by my mrs.

After her small off, her confidence was knocked, she was too hot (stress and hot sunshine)

and it all overwhelmed her a bit.

I've had her out on the back of mine for a couple of hours this evening as she

came home a bit scared of bikes and declared that if we didn't go out on mine today then

there was every chance she wouldn't want to get on a bike ever again including as a passenger.

After a lovely steady ride with me she has remembered why she wanted to do it in the first place

and has lost the fear which is good. She's booked in for next Sunday for a few hours of basics

and we'll take it from there.

Ah mate. Im sorry to hear it didnt go to plan.

Im sure she'll get into it when she gets to grips next sunday.

I wish her all the best :).

+1 from me. Tough old day for her :(

Gary, sorry to hear things didn't go very well.

I'm sure Mrs Grr will get there in the end, its a shame that she didn't get the attention that she needed during her cbt.

When I did mine, I was the only person not to have ridden a motorbike before & the instructors spent a little extra time with me, which made teaching a little more difficult for them as there were so many people doing the course.

I wish Mrs Grr the best of luck for next week.

My wife sounds similar, she grew up riding horses and has only recently started riding a push bike, she too would like to learn how to ride a motorbike and has said she is having my bike when I move onto a bigger bike.

Mrs Grr is an inspiration to my wife learning to ride a motorbike.

Matthew

Really sorry to hear that Gary, news like that puts motorcycle stuff into perspective.

Hope MrsGrr's not too sore today and try to keep her spirits up.

Take care of the most important issue cos it's only a motorbike and will be there whenever she feels ready again.

As has been said before, tell her the Brisky massive is asking after her.

As I mentioned before about my gate, I checked the dimensions of the 636 before going to see it. Lucky I did!!!! You can imagine how much tighter it felt when I put it in there last night just after midnight! Here are some snaps from today (well yesterday now)

There is a gap here but pic seemed to bleed in the wood, was about 1mm - 2mm  :peek:

Video today of the tightness! All of you who do not have a garage, do you have any tight ingress/egress points to negotiate?

Some great machines :-)  like all the retro bikes.

I'm a Triumph Bonneville 900SE - has cast wheels.

Did have a Moto Guzzi Breva 1100 :-)

I had that trouble but I'm a builder ;)

Before... (needed replacing anyway)

During...

IMAG0130_zpsujlnijaw.jpg

After...

IMAG0133_zpstbqdpoji.jpg

Then just painted it all to match. All built completely from scratch I might add, including the angled panel on the left.

We had not long had some very damaging high winds locally and you couldn't buy a fence panel anywhere for love nor money.

Plenty of timber around though and I had a bit of trellis kicking around so I made my own gates and panel :) cheaper too.

Once it's in the back yard I have a tight bit between my extension and a wall, but I gave myself an extra 6 inches by

removing the gate and post that was there. The post was rotten anyway...

The small wall is low enough to miss my mirrors but before the gate was gone I had to pull them in.

For me it's a question of getting it down a 9 inch step to the back yard and up into my shed which is over a foot

off the ground, first I had to widen the path, it was hard work but necessary. Grassy slopes and road bikes don't mix.

First I dug it all out, By hand.

IMAG0192_zpseofqhzho.jpg

Took all the muck down the tip... After first giving 60 rubble bags of topsoil

to my neighbour for his raised beds. Here's the rest on the plucky little kangoo

IMAG0195_zpsp5fcflqc.jpg

Then laid concrete pad to widen path. Again all by hand. Then blended the angle of the ground into the existing slope.

IMAG0202_zpsxwcajoxp.jpg

IMAG0203_zpsdhasexm7.jpg

Then turfed it in to match the lawn.

IMAG0211_zpsp5odv0hk.jpg

While I was pimping my shed I fitted new glass and strengthened the frames to keep prying eyes out

Also added some flourescent lighting for those hours I'll spend out in the shed tinkering.

I bought some alloy ramps from ebay to solve the height issue between shed and floor.

I bought two for extra width getting the bike in and out of the shed, each rated for 350kg

bikewithramps_zps4fc30d4e.jpg

At the front of the house I only use the one ramp. .

Getting over the railway sleeper out the front was another problem, also the gate is at the wrong angle

for a straight run at it.

First I bolted a strip of checkerplate aluminium onto it (which I got pre cut and drilled from ebay)

to stop lateral tyre movement when wheeling over the top edge of the sleeper because when it's

wet that sleeper is slippery as hell.

Then concreted a couple of slabs in gravel side to get over the two inch height difference that side.

The very first pic in this post shows this spot and the height difference & before slabs and checkerplate.

The slab is far more stable and it means that when I apply the front brake to control the descent speed

as I walk the bike down the ramp the front wheel is clear of the gravel and doesn't skid when I brake.

IMAG0200_zpsx1nksk0h.jpg

After that I made a wooden adaptor so my ramp is at the correct angle and I'm sorted.

Keeps me off the streets though eh, and it means my bike doesn't get wet and I have somewhere indoors to clean

it and do my maintenance etc.

Some serious skills there Garry! Nice work mate :)

Thats all good mate! Im impressed!

But why didnt you make a concrete ramp instead of using the metal ramps?

  • Author

You need to come round and sort mine out! I want to take everything beside house out and run another drive up and at end of it have a big shed with double barn doors for the bike and my seemingly growing collection of alloys in my existing tired shed.

Some serious skills there Garry! Nice work mate :)

Shucks.... It's my job dude....

I'll have to get another shed when I've got a bike as I've got 3 sheds that are full!

Two full of Stag parts and one of random carp

Thats all good mate! Im impressed!

But why didnt you make a concrete ramp instead of using the metal ramps?

A few reasons really, firstly security,  secondly, fussy wife  :D

Plus the shed is on 3 inch battens so even if I did make a concrete ramp

I'd still need something else to get the bike over the last 5 inches or so.

Plus, if you can't find the ramps, then you can't get the bike out that easily.

They're not in the shed... but chained up elsewhere ;)

I haven't built anything there as yet but will be making some steps instead.

Then I can leave them as they are in the future and remake a lawn around them.

Additionally, it gives me ramps for getting bikes I may buy in the future into the backs

of vans and stuff which is a handy thing to have.

Also, I'm looking at adding an extension to the house in the next year or two and part

of that new bit of house is earmarked for being a purpose made (heated) motorcycle garage

and workshop, with a turntable in the floor for spinning the bike around on and a door leading into my

kitchen...

Most of that work is temporary and un-doable when the wife wants her bit of lawn back, and I get my shed

back for normal shed stuff of which I have much. Most is residing in my loft atm. Not ideal but somethings

gotta give until the extension is made.

Your kitchen? Don't you mean SWMBO's Kitchen ;)

 Top work there Garry, fair play! Wish I had the skills to do that kinda thing.
