Oil Prices

Featured Replies

At 5,000 miles I had to top up the Octavia in my car using the spare litre of Castrol Edge 5/30 supplied by the dealer. I bought a replacement litre from Halfords - cost around £20. I was in our local branch of Wilkinsons Hardware (Wilkos) today and they have the same oil on offer at £9.50 a litre. Just thought I would give you all a heads up!

My oil warning light came on today towards the end of my 260 mile journey. I'd just tipped over 8000 miles when it came on. Being so far from home I'll just have get oil from the nearest place I can find. But nice to know Wilco's has it on offer.

Thanks!

I saw the prices in Halfords ( £20 a litre, £46 for 4 litres) & trawled the Internet ! I bought a 4 litre plastic "can" of Castrol Edge for £27 including delivery, off Amazon - this should last for the duration of my PCP ownership !

JKW

Amazon, eurocarparts or ebay £27.99 delivered for 4l, half that for 1l

jeezus, I thought this had something to do with Ukraine.

Asda usually have the correct oil at much cheaper than Halfords etc. If you have a local Asda saves the messing about ordering online & waiting around for delivery. Not bought any for a while so don't know current price, but has always been cheapest I have found.

Asda is currently £12.50 FOR THE 1l - I am hoping that oil consumption will calm down now I have a few miles - I have not had to put oil in any car between services for 25 years, so the consumption for the Octavia is a little disappointing. The Wilko price is a short term offer and there normal price is similar to Asda

My dealer just says to pop in if oil needed between services, which I have in the past. It's free. It usually settles down after 10,000 miles

Remember an Astra I had before moving to Skoda 4 yrs ago.Said in the handbook. May use up to 1ltr every 1,000 miles.

And it's the correct vw spec?

I never got top up kit with my tsi vrs. What is the correct oil for this engine please as my manual doesn't cover it at all only up to 1.8cc

Long life or fixed service schedule?

I have the car due for a service every year or 10 thousand miles whichever comes first

Most manufacturers quite something similar but per 1000km which is 620miles, Skoda quote something along those lines in the owners manual.

Can I just ask, is it only certain VAG engines which are expected to use so much oil?

I only ask as I've checked mine a few times (and again today) in the 5 months (and 4000 miles) I've owned my TDI VRS and if it's used any oil it's a tiny amount as it's still basically showing full on the dipstick. My 1ltr of oil is still sealed in my boot :-)

I've never gone easy on it from new, nor have I abused it but I don't drive like miss daisy and I have driven it hard at times (only when the oil is up to temp) and so far it's been a dream. Have I just been lucky or does the 184ps TDI just not use oil?

Same here. Mine has used a tiny amount if any. Maybe we just got good ones?

Maybe the diesels don't use as much oil as the petrols - I have not had to put any oil in mine in 14k miles.

Think some of it is to do with how the engine was run in, the ones that have been driven spiritally during running in apparently fare better in the lower oil consumption stakes, that is what I was told anyway by a skoda tech when I bought my mk1fabia vrs,i know its a different engine, but I suppose the basic construction is the same,he said that it was in part to do with the piston rings having a chrome plating and takes a bit to bed in, iv always driven my cars hard when the engine is warm, but not hanging it on the redline,my mk2hardly used any oil between services,so am driving the mk3the same way

That unfortunately means little nowadays, you need to check the VW50?.?? number on the back of the bottle.

Buy a 1 litre bottle at sensible money and put in boot. Don't be forced to pay top $$ or worse add the wrong spec.

Theory is spirited early use = higher pressures getting behind piston rings from the start= quicker and better seated rings (seated means worn to fit the bore) = less oil passing the rings and being burnt= healthier and more powerful engine.

Eurocarparts are current having a special on 5/30 edge oil £28 for 4L meets 507 spec

Yeah, its on ebay delivered for £28.50 & its VW 504 00/ 507 00
