EoinM was there anything else included on my16 to justify the price increase, like yourself I didn't spec the nav due to smart link but went for canton instead, I did spec the mirrors so now they are included is a nice bonus, money to spend on something else, was hoping the reversing camera would be included so that's good news as well.

Are you sure. AFAIK my EU5 doesnt have brake energy recovery.

GAFF it was in the region of €750 for my16 VRS combi

Start-stop and energy recovery (but not EU6) were already standard on all UK models in MY15, and always have been as far as I know. Obviously the specification in other countries varies.

No, just mirror link and the 6.5" screen, folding mirrors (don't know if they have the lights or not) and reverse camera.

I added front sensors, black pack, anthracite alloys, tinted windows, heated seats, heated windscreen, colour maxidot, hill hold, foot well lights in the back, service pack and an alarm.

The hatch is gone up by €680 to €34,275 basic.

The vrs has always bee eec6, the price of vrs hatch according to my dealer has dropped by 230, estate gone up 100

Ordered my new one yesterday, supposedly on Irish spec cars the folding mirrors, reverse camera and 6.5" bolero with smart link/android auto/apple car play is standard. I added a lot of items to the car but not Nav as Skoda confirmed via email when I was there that they would be coming with the extra functionality. 8-12 week wait now.

Whereas in the UK we get amundsen nav and have to pay for smartlink. I think the Irish deal is better

Not sure about that. Smartlink is a £150 option where as the Amundsen is £755!

Aye but if you have smartlink you don't need nav and you get a reversing camera

Better option might have been a better word rather than deal

I don't think Google nav is quite there yet. Always needing connection, you lose the ability in areas with spotty reception. Which is probably where you need it most.

Lamholam is right... Phone based nav has its advantages but losing data or GPS signal can be *quite* annoying. If I take the car into town (Central London) on the weekend, I need good GPS to get around and there are plenty black spots in the city! For that reason I much prefer built in Nav or ability for phone to use a superior antenna.

Does smart link allow the phone to connect to a more superior antenna built into the car? It probably should and may explain why SUK advised me that smartlink is more than just a software thing.

Its going offline later this year. It was mentioned at their I/O the other day which was the clenched for me.

@EoinM its not just about offline mapping, you still need a location fix (a good enough GPS reception) and in built up areas that's not such a great experience on a smartphone.

But then I suppose maybe not that many people have a need for the Nav to work in high rise, built up areas :-s

Smartlink essentially just allows certain approved apps on certain approved smartphones to be displayed and controlled via the infotainment.

Smartlink is an improvement/2nd gen of Mirrorlink which basically provides full support for Apple Carplay as well as Android Auto....Mirrorlink only provided Android Auto support.

As I understand it the MIB2 Bolero and Amundsen units have both the hardware and software capability to support Smartlink its whether the unit comes licenced to use the functionality from the factory or not thats the key thing.....I suspect you pay for the option it comes licenced and activated from the factory, otherwise you buy a licence key from your local dealer (probably at greater cost) retrospectively.

The Discover Nav Pro in the Mk7 Golf (same as Columbus) comes with Smartlink as standard.

Assuming the likes of Garmin or TomTom bring out a CarPlay or Android Auto capable app which they could well do, would almost certainly do away with the need for integrated nav. There is one Android nav app I know of that works with Mirrorlink but not sure how good it is.

I thought Mirrorlink was purely the mirroring of the screen to the HU but you didn't get any control from the HU and was therefore different to Android Auto? I may be wrong though :)

My understanding is that Mirrorlink, Android Auto, CarPlay are all individual technologies/companies and not related.

Mirror link sounds like a dead technology... It shouldn't really be mentioned considering so few things support it (apps) and that list doesn't seem to be growing.

Yea...its sounds like a lot of manufacturers got on board with mirrorlink. But Android Auto & CarPlay are the big players.

Sorry Andyvee I might be confusing matters...not sure if Mirrorlink was a VAG proprietary technology that happened to just work with Android phones only..may well have been the case? I believe the basic premise is still the same, just offers on screen control of certain approved smartphone apps...just that Smartlink supports carplay and Android Auto technologies so will no doubt support alot more apps in time to come.
