Lidl dashcam

Featured Replies

I see that Lidl are offering a dashcam for £39.99 this Thursday.  It looks different to the one that was on sale last year.  Was thinking of getting one for the rear.

Anyone know anything about them please?

Cheers.

Denis

Saw that too, 1080p also. I was considering one for the rear as I've a Roadhawk up front.

Thinking of getting one for the back, just need to see how long the cable is first though

Don't recognise it from anywhere else. Still 3yr warranty. Dashcams do seem to have a reputation for going pop.

If it is THIS DASHCAM, it might be worth a punt although the 2.7" display seems a bit conspicuous and redundant. GPS functionality would have been nice - if improbable at this price.

  • Dashboard Camera
  • Camcorder for documenting traffic – e.g. for accidents
  • G-sensor for automatic video sequence clip, e.g. upon impact
  • Motion detection – automatically records when motion is detected, e.g. at car parks
  • Rechargeable Li-Ion battery* (3.7V / 350mAh) with 12/24V adaptor and charging cable
  • Video length and continuous recording settings
  • Additional photo function with 4x digital zoom
  • Includes pivoting and swivelling suction cup holder
  • Preview function via TFT display – 6.8cm (2.7')
  • Night recording possible with adequate street lighting
  • Built-in microphone and speaker
  • Micro-SD/SD HC card slot for memory cards up to 32GB
  • HD video resolution: 1920 x 1080px, photo: 5MP
  • Contents: camera, holder with suction cup, USB-to-mini-USB cable, 12/24V USB adaptor and AV cable
  • *Recording function operational whilst charging

I am thinking about getting one of these :)

Rather pay the extra get a decent bit of kit.

Let us all know how these are

I see that the latest version has a photo resolution of one MegaPixel whereas the "old" one had a photo resolution of five MegaPixels.

That resolution probably refers to the screen and not the camera as full hd is 2.1 mega pixels.

We shall see . . . tomorrow . . . perhaps vaguely.

That sort of camera is all over eBay @ around £19.00, so making the lidl unit expensive.

I've been running 3 of the £19 jobs now for a while, like well over a year with no probs :)

Good idea, I have just had a look and seen THIS.

£39.99, relatively inconspicuous, attaches to the rear view mirror, front and rear cameras.

Possible advantage with the Lidl one is that it should have been through the EU standards for electrical testing.

The Chinese dash-cam I had previously had issues with EM leakage ruining the radio reception.

1080p@25fps? Wont be the best at numberplate capture then.

The cheap one I had did 1080p@30fps and it was very clear.

25fps is the same as a telly picture should be ok.

Must resist, help me Lee, I have a problem with Lidls cheap stuff !!!

25fps meets the PAL TV standard I think. But fps along with bitrate and sensor used are the main factors for number plate capture in a dashcam. I would personally not spend £40 on something where you must take the gamble when there are similar priced and some cheaper proven units available. Before these devices became popular and you could find reviews and test footage online, I spent £1500+ going through different models ultimately. I am approaching 2 years with current cameras (£35 at time) and to date best raw footage I have had smashing £300 cameras of the past and same generation. I would love an upgrade, but I need at least 1080p@60fps with 128gb support reliability. I hope the likes of Mobius do a 'Mobius 2' or something and don't let their standards drop from current.

I would have thought that the resolution (pixel count) of the sensor is far and away the most important consideration so far as number plate recognition is concerned.

Why do you need 60 frames per second? 30 fps would seem to be more than adequate.

Presumably the need for a massive 128 GB is a result of your wanting so high a frame rate.

Well, after a Porsche Cayenne nearly taking my front end off this morning in Darlington I popped into Lidl and picked one up. No memory card in it yet but ordered one and will be here tomorrow. I'll have a play.

Rate of approach/closing speed of an oncoming vehicle is where FPS helps out a lot and more so for my usage (slowing down footage). I have cameras with near double the resolution of sensor but will not capture a fraction of the footage I do with the mobius which is lower. There are many many variables tbh. But in basic scanning through looking for cameras to weed out the sea of poorer ones, I'd start there to make a short list. 1080p is only around 2mp anyway, to capture bigger resolution than that with cameras with 5/6/8/10/16mp sensors etc it's for still pictures only. The quality of the sensor is what matters. Same as with normal digital cameras before phones took over, but as with phones some can take a better picture with a lower MP count due to being a better sensor in first place.

Those dash cams were in lidl over here a month ish ago and in lidl in ROI within last 2 weeks I think. There is plenty of footage on youtube of people testing out the units. tbh I am not overly impressed by what I see so far. Those who get one as their first ever dash cam will generally rav about such purchases, but with nothing to compare it to in reality it's the best/worst they have ever owned at the same time. From the footage below, you could better it for less money (minus the genuinely good 3 year warranty) elsewhere with ease. Seems to be about on par quality of footage wise with my old DoD GS600 I bought 4 years ago for £280, minus GPS data logging.

I am not sure it the current lidl ones are the same ones they have had in for sale on and off over the last year or so, be good to find out the actual product make and number as all the others to date have been 720p upscaled to 1080p, which by the footage below looks to be accurate for these videos. It appears by picture on website to be same camera and even mentions all be it under picture resolution 1mp which is not 1080p for a start. and then mentions 12mp (interpolated)... It looks identical to the one I saw in my local store last month, but website may not be an accurate picture.

Posted last week: at start of video van driving past illustrates why I dislike 25fps with it's jerky motion.

This is the one sold in ROI and NI recently (2 weeks ago in ROI) of which the above videos are from. The Irish advert confirms it's not 1080p and says (upscaled) after it. If it's the same camera, I would return it tbh if that's not in the GB advert and have a butchers at the dashcam threads on here for something around the same money that would be much better. The camera shown below is a 720p with a Novatek 96220 chipset inside it (no relation to any external branding of product).

If lidl advertises it as upscaled in ROI and fails to say so for GB, it would be a little misleading tbh.

It doesn't mention upscaled in the blurb or on the advert.
