Were there a few lemons there ?  Most of my Fords were, and the VW gti's had marvelous electrical faults like MFD working when they felt like it :D

51 mk5 fiesta 1.25 16v beasty car, lowered it, leather interior, race pipe. Quick for its size, but burnt oil like a proper ford

51 seat ibiza 1.4 mpi was excellent, except it had THREE gearboxes break. Had coilovers, polo interior, custom fitted stereo, only scrapped it a month ago due to it breaking a driveshaft and it not being worth fixing

02 fabia mpi in the best colour (fantasy green) owned for 2 months while debating whether or not to put gearbox number four into the ibiza. This was the biggest lemon! Put a new engine, rad and coolant bottle in it when the engine blew up 50 miles after owning. Sold it for half what I paid for it, fail.

57 seat leon 1.9 tdi is my latest pride and joy. I absolutely love it and I hope to keep it for many years. Has all the toys, cruise, Bluetooth etc and also added autolights

Apart from the memories of Isopon filler and losing untold tubes of that blue hardener stuff, Some Sunday mornings consisted of a trip to our local breakers yard with wrecked cars stacked 3 or 4 high. Normally the car you wanted something off was on the top (health and safety was not invented then). Because you wanted a "new" radiator as yours was either leaking of so full of crud it overheated  there you were climbing up these cars, trying to unbolt this radiator while this stack of cars was swaying and creaking with you hanging on the front, wrestling with corroded jubilee clips, skinning knuckles, dropping tools and screwdrivers never to be seen again,...

Can anyone else relate to these days  ?

The name of the breakers has come to mind now.....The King of Lee in Lewisham London, the site now is a retirement home :|

The good old days. I used to take sixth form students to the scrappy for an afternoon...bring back bits and bobs and strip them down, draw them, reassemble them...great fun and a real learning experience. Sad that those days are almost gone due to H&S.

I started with a 1970 MK2 Cortina 1300 had it just over a year and bought a Vauxhall Magnum 1800 which I had for 2-3 years moved onto a Triumph Dolomite 1500 HL (one of the best I've owned) and run that to it needed the subframe mount welded so got shot of it for a 3 litre Mk1 Ford Granada Ghia auto saloon (The best car I've ever owned) I run the Granada for 8-9 years to it literally was falling apart and bought a Vauxhall Cavallier CD 1800 which I had 3 years then got a Citroen BX 1600 TGS which I had about 2 years then got a Ford Orion 1400 run that for a few years and got a Citroen ZX diesel which I had for a year (to small inside) moved onto a Ford Sierra Sapphire 1800 (brilliant car) that I had for about 4 years then got a Peugeot 406 diesel which I ran for about 2 years then over the next 8-10 years I'd 3 Citroen Xantia and my last car was a Citroen C5 (2nd best to the Granada) and my current cars my Octavia 2 litre TDI L&K hatchback which I think is brilliant.

The 1970 Cortina would have been worth a few bob now as well as the Mk1 Granada (always wanted one). You must have liked that Granada to have kept it so long, how much did you spend on fuel ? :peek: . All in all a nice collection of classics

Hi Bazzer,

I did love the Granada but I'd only just bought it when I met the girl I ended up getting engaged to and marrying. Between that buying a house in 1982 just as mortgages went through the roof and then son number 1 came along so money for another car wasn't even an option ... the car around town gave 14-15mpg and 25mpg on a run so it cost a fortune but luckily I lived within walking distance of work (the reason we bought the house) then I started getting a lift in and out of work.

There was a few bummers in there but yes the Cortina & Granada would no doubt be worth a fortune now as would the Sapphire from some prices I've seen them going for ... I loved the Dolomite, a very underrated car if you ask me, but the Granada was a joy to drive and you could come out after a trip from Motherwell to Blackpool as fresh as a daisy ... minus quite a few pounds out the wallet mind lol

Peter I used to love my Mk2 Granada 2.8 ghia but I often wonder if it was as good as I remember. I still have a piston from it somewhere with a bit of a self tapper that had welded itself to the top when I dropped it down the air intake  . The good old days of having mates with garages and not a vinyl glove in sight :notme:

I always wanted a 3500 sdi Rover as well as I read somewhere that the 3500 lump was in a low state of tune and could be "sorted" quite easily but it never happened

Hi Brazer,

I never drove a MK2 Granada but did fancy one .. I was tempted with a Rover SDI, the 2600 engine, it was my sister in laws dad's car, but it just felt so cramped inside that I de ided to give it a miss .

Great thread. Wish I'd kept a tally of miles driven like FlyingGecko.

Since passing my test in 1988:

1979 BL Mini 850. Lime Green ( was my next door neighbour car. She owned it from new )

1981 Ford Escort XR3. Metallic Silver I mature to boy racer status and a string of blue ovals that will without exception break my heart due to rust and leaks. Baaaaaaad memories !

1983 Ford Orion Ghia. Nimbus Grey. My most liked blue oval but still horiffic

1987 Ford Escort XR3i. Mercury Grey. Rust bucket

1988 BMW 318i . Burgandy. Nice car. Sold is as I had to buy somewhere to live. Bit of a pain that.

1994 Citroën AX 1.5D Spree. Tropical Violet. Free insurance. 70mpg tin can. What's not to like

1995 Peugeot 106 1.5D Aztec. Diablo Red. More free insurance

1997 Citroën Saxo 1.1 Desire. Silver. Yep - Free insurance

2000 Peugeot 206 1.4 GLX . Silver. Another 2 year free insurance deal. My first mod too with some aftermarket alloys.

1998 Audi A3 1.8T Sport. Hibiscus Red. I see sense at the age of 31 and buy my first decent car !

2002 VW Golf V6 4 Motion . Diamond Black. Cream Leather. Premature mid life crisis at 35

2004 Audi A4 1.9 TDI 130 Quattro Sport Avant . Akoya Silver. My last car in the pre 'company car years'

The only one of the wife's cars I will add here as we still have it :

2004 Audi A2 TDI 90 Sport. Lots of mods :)

2007 Audi A3 TDI Sportback SLine. Brilliant black.First company car. Went daft with the options list

2009 Audi A3 TDI Sportback SLine Black Edition. Ibis White. Loved this car

2012 Audi Q5 TDI SLine + Daytona Grey. Nice car but uninspiring.

2015 Skoda Octavia TDI vRS combi. Candy White............... I've arrived !!

Not that many, although with work I've had so many hire cars I've had a good go with many of the "other brands" that I'll never buy certain marques (cough Vauxhall cough).

2005ish: T reg silver 1.4 seat Ibiza. My first ever car, wrote it off pretty quickly :(

2006ish: R reg Peugeot 306 1.9 hdi. Nice car, pity it was an ex-hire car with almost no synchro left and the back axle fell off.

2007ish: N reg Volvo 850t5 saloon, bought it from Cambridgeshire police who had fiddled with it including bigger brakes. I wish I'd never sold it to my mate who ran it into the ground with lack of care, but I had to change as I was suddenly doing massive mileage and couldn't afford 15mpg.

2009/10: 54plate 1.8 Tddi Ford Focus. Dreadful car, I bought it from Strathclyde police and it had the worst brakes I've ever experienced (I've driven series 3 landrovers!) but it was cheap to run unlike the Volvo.

2012: 06 plate mk1 Fabia vrs diesel. A relief from the focus but it's seats almost crippled me.

2013: 63plate mk3 octavia vrs diesel manual estate. My current car, love it to bits and my first ever new car. However it's looking like it'll be chopped in this year - I'm sick of crashing over potholes and I've fallen out badly with Skoda Uk.

Next:

SWMBO has her heart set on a Volvo XC60 so I'm looking at a post April 2015 (new engine) D5 AWD R design lux nav but it's a case of waiting for one with the extras I want to come up as I can save about 10k over the car wow new price if I take up to 10k miles. 220bhp and 4x4 with move weight than the octavia gives slightly worse fuel economy but similar performance (although not cornering).

Oh and I can get a heated steering wheel fitted ;)

One of my old Bosses had a 05 Subaru WRX Prodrive and He used to let me use it sometimes, seriously quick but I felt the interior was a bit naff, engine wise it could not be faulted. I see you are after a Fiat Arbarth 500.  Years ago Fiat ( Fix It Again Tony) were laughed at like Skoda were....Funny how things have changed
