Breaking VW Emissions Scandal -Mk I

Featured Replies

The Norwegians did a Euro 6 on the road test which included a new Passat.

Bearing in mind the limit for Euro 6 is 80g/km

for an 8km drive.

At -7 degrees on a cold start the Passat emitted 400g/km

At 23 degrees on a warm engine it emitted 250g/km

So pretty bad, until you look at some others.

The Mazda CX5 2.2D Euro 6

At -7 degrees on a cold start emitted 800g/km

At 23 degrees on a warm engine emitted 400g/km.

So Mazda doesn't have a cheat map but it's Sky Active system is designed to reduce NOx in the EU laboratory tests and has little effect on the road.

Honda have taken a long time to produce its first diesel......perhaps we now know why.

On Sunday I put a deposit down on a Superb 2.0 tdci which has the affected engine. I haven't picked the car up yet and I'm in two minds what to do. If I refuse the car because of what has been revealed am I covered by the sale of goods act so I can get my deposit back? Or if I continue with the purchase, is the car now worth a lot less than I'll pay for it? Any advice/opinion would be very welcome. Thanks.

On what EXACT grounds are you going to invoke the Sale of Goods Act?

Anyone else bored witless with this story now?

Totally!!

Do you think VW have any 4 cylinder diesels that will withstand a thorough retest?.

I doubt it.

Means nothing, The NOx figures quoted by manufacturers are those achieved under set testing conditions. Same goes for CO CO2 and all other emissions. Anyone who thinks any car can hit it's lab test results on the road, needs to buy a push bike or a Tesla Model S

Seeing as Skoda in the UK/Europe have so far not done, been accused off, or been mentioned in the press of doing anything wrong ...

Don't don't panic don't panic don't panic.

Yup the EA288 passed with flying colours, and under the tests set out by UK regulators.

Jesus, talk about the rumour mill going into over drive

Propagated by the media to create mass hysteria

<SNIP>

Quite so.  It is remarkable that VW have been conned into setting aside a paltry €6.5bn to cover the costs of the scandal and the VW Chief Exec Martin Winterkorn has resigned, quite unnecessarily in both cases

Jesus, talk about the rumour mill going into over drive  :D

Even if this turns into the nightmare some of you guys think it will, it WILL NOT effect owners of current vehicles, even if those vehicles are over the limit regarding emissions of NOx.

There are two stories on this. 1: Is the original story about VW cheating to meet California emission standards, those emission standards are really tight.

Story 2: Propagated by the media to create mass hysteria, involves industry tricks to get lab results for MPG and emissions that in no way reflect real world driving emissions.

VED changes are not applied retrospectively, they only apply to new vehicles from 2017. Only budget changes to VED can apply to all cars.

The tree huggers AND SOME IDIOTS HERE must be having multiple orgasms will all this carp being thrown about. Our Sun causes thousands of deaths through skin cancer each year, anyone want to turn it off?

Corrected that for you  :D

When was that testing procedure applied?.

Surely the 4 cylinder production line can't still be running.

Why should it be stopped?

They don't only produce diesel cars; what about the petrol cars?

They still meet the EU and Aussie limits!!

Obviously I'm referring to diesels .

There is an 'unfollow' button .

Under the engines complaint to euro 6 emissions testing.

Quite some time ago.

Today under a new strict retest?.

You do not seem to get it.  These VW diesels particularly are adding hugely to early deaths from breath and lung problems.  Almost 10K deaths in Greater London alone and 20K in the rest of the UK.

Things are worse in summer days and on those warm sunny still winter days but the numbers of early death in the UK, Europe, US and the Rest of World are such that NO needs tackingly urgently.

Detuning the 185/180.170/150/140 hp CR wiesel engines down to so they produce much less NO like the 105/110 and 1.6 CR does.

I take it that you drive a petrol? And what are you doing to offset the (also deadly) CO emissions? I also take it you are planting lots of trees daily to offset the CO2 emissions too?

Also, I am not sure that it is VW alone that is responsible for the 'huge numbers of deaths'. Might be all the other diesel powered vehicles as well?

Here's the official EPA saga

Now read the following quote from that document

It is incumbent upon Volkswagen to initiate the process that will fix the cars’ emissions systems. Car owners should know that although these vehicles have emissions exceeding standards, these violations do not present a safety hazard and the cars remain legal to drive and resell. Owners of cars of these models and years do not need to take any action at this time.

Absolutely

It will take a v long time for this to wash out and life goes on for the innocent at least.

What new test? Euro 6 is the current emission standard.

Fact America excepts manufacturers emissions without actually verifying the claimed results.

Fact, The EU tests random cars from the production line, and believe me, the tests are thorough.

Let's put this perpective, if these engines were produced in 2007 or earlier, no-one would bat an eyelid. The culprits are the ridiculous emissions targets being imposed on us by the greenies.
