Breaking VW Emissions Scandal -Mk I

Featured Replies

When VW finally come up with a fix (what if they can't, for a reasonable cost to them?) the other big problem they are going to have once the recall work starts is whether the dealers can cope with it?

Or is customer service going to suffer for those booking their cars in for routine servicing/repairs/warranty work etc? Will they have the resources i.e. equipment/manpower/space to carry out the fixes?

If they do have problems it could alienate customers that don't have cars requiring a fix and so adding to VW's problems.

Sorry if I'm speculating/guessing/creating hysteria/scaremongering etc. Delete as appropriate! It's not work or a public announcement it's just me spending some of my leisure time on a forum, like you do. :D

Dealers won't be put in, or accept, being put in a position of not being fully equipped for this recall.

It would suggest VW weren't serious.......Germans tend to be thorough.

The 1.6 will require new injectors and then remapped ecu and a potential upgrade exhaust ! This also for the 1.2 tdi , however the 2.0 will only require ecu cheat removal

Err?

Why?

We don't know what the effect is yet, so you are scaremongering.

No Graham

It's a simple fix and almost certainly involves the EGR ......no other hardware just how IT operates.

But

Seeing it ( and every other component in the emmissions system train) has a 10 year min design life we shouldn't need to worry at all....should we?

If just EGR can solve problem, why new injectors?

A?

Because of more precise timing and dosage of fuel (multiple injections of fuel per cycle, like Multijet engines). My specualtion is also changing of high pressure fuel pump (supporting new injectors with higher pressure)

And yes I do know how they work.

Not the 2.0L though, which Graham and I have.

Why will it involve the EGR?

And yes I do know how they work.

NOx reduction is achieved by lowering the combustion temperature which is precisely what the EGR is there for.

In the test cell they would have had it working very well but on the road it would revert to power and economy.

For us no hardware needed, just programming.......

They do. I had mine replaced after it got wiped at its last service. I now have an STS unit - not available when it was originally remapped last summer - which I'm assuming will work for these changes too. I'll probably go back to Shark again anyway, once Skoda have done what they need to, to have the latest ECU map put on the STS as the standard. I might get another dyno run just to see what impact it's had.

Be fascinated to know the results of your dyno test after the software upgrade on your 170.

Put to rest all the speculation about whether there is a downgrade in performance.

I imagine Shark would be curious as well.

I'm now more inclined to believe that the 'cheat' started in the U.S. in 09 with basically the same engine as mine and would have been. So simply ANY engineer could have worked it out once they defined the test parameters.

Of course later versions proved their undoing is my thinking

Letters have started coming through, not that it says much apart from the repair will be at no cost and to check here for updates: http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/dieselinfo

Thanks Langers. I had a letter from Skoda today saying my Superb is affected etc and will be hearing further  and meantime I should visit  the dedicated area on their website at  www.skoda.co.uk/dieselinfo   and try as I may  via 2 internet accounts, was unable to make that link work, and which it transpires the link you have posted above is THE correct one. So Skoda  can't even get their w/site info's  correct. Yours does work!, not as though there is much useful info in there.

Both our recall letters have arrived today, 1 skoda 1 vw

And did it make you incontinent!,  plus the link you were supplied with is the same  that I was given in my letter, and which did not work/exist, so what with your incontinence and  fraud link, you ain't doing too well?. At least I was only supplied with  the  fraudulent link.  What a shower.

Yeah, just came in from work to a lovely letter from Skoda, mine is a 2014 1.6tdi

Just have to wait and see what they come up with as a viable fix/solution

As long as it doesn't affect performance/economy or reliability I won't really be bothered

It looks as  though the skoda link you were given is the same as mine and which doesn't work. Hopeless!

That doesn't surprise me, they couldn't even type my numberplate properly at the top of the letter lol

Hi guys. Ive got a octavia vrs diesel. A lot has been speculated on the subject of the emissions on the ea189 engines. I had a letter from skoda turn up today saying my car has the affected cheat. Can anyone tell me what the ramifications could be by not having the recall??

oops, sorry, everyone is observing from their perspective of problem :)

I think most people are forgetting (the ones who are VAG devotes)  Is that VAG can tweak the map to be compliant with NOX whilst still hit 'Peak' Torque and PS. the same as the advertised figures which will tick the boxes and satisfy the regulators however the word 'Peak' is very important in this sentence. The rest of the curve will / could be useless so during real world driving the power is not there when you need it, effectively retarding the performance to satisfy the test but now 'cheating' the dyno from a power perspective. So stop thinking in terms of the fix = less horsepower and fuel economy. I fully expect that VW have the know how to solve the problem however the drivability which isn't a tangible figure will almost surely be affected. You choose your car largely on the test drive now this isn't a quantifiable figure so people are going to have a hard time proving the vehicle doesn't drive as well as it did.

The engineers have been told economy is the priority which means no increase in CO2 emissions to go along with the NOx reduction.

We will pay with less power/torque........mappers will have a new client base I'd think.

Heaps more in today's GoAuto News again

Including the Haval range of Chinese SUV ......you might not laugh at these.

Where did you find out the 2.0 only needs a cheat removal? I wasn't aware VW had released this info.

I seem to recall the statement was from the UK CEO to the Commons select committee on transport.

Specifically stating the 1.6 will need hardware as well as software but the 2.0 would only need a modification to the ECU ....a fairly quick fix.

But the software update could remap the car and change performance/mpg. He doesn't say that it's only a removal of the cheat.

' Dad are we there yet?'
