VW Emissions Scandal Thread V2

Featured Replies

How would this make the vehicle use more fuel ?

More fuel means more CO2 and that's been ruled out.

It's about reducing combustion temperatures (power).....:

If people were really smart they'd ban big cities. They're the cause of all these problems.

So no injector fix? Just this mesh and it's fine ?

I assume this Holy Grail fix will have to be submitted for UK Type Approval since the Government said that VAG would have to pay for this.  It does seem surprising that such a bit a mesh could make all the difference but I suppose we will have to wait and see. I am very interested to see what it does when someone sticks a probe up the tailpipe. Oh, and VAG, no cheating please.

I suspect it's more to do with the accurate analysis of the oxygen content relating to control of combustion temps.

The priority is reduced NOx the consequences are reduced power

No UK Type Approval unless the UK is going to be leaving the EU sometime in the near future.

There is a very easy UK MOT, and apart from it extending by a year before the first test, there are no big plans on changing it any time soon.

So there is a new issue for VW on Energy Recovery.

Oh how they find more and more problems as they look for them.

VW have met the U.S. 'fix deadline' and have submitted them to the EPA and CARB for approval.

In the video, is that a new cable he plugs into a new sensor? or was it already there?

The UK is not in the US, and neither is Australia.

VW are meeting what the EU Countries allow Germany to come up with, or maybe their own Transport Authority,

which is not in the US if in the EU.

I'm pretty sure that's already there

First post updated with video.

Finally, some actual news :)

VW is so ful of cr4p in talk of developments in the last 10 years.

In 2005 they might well have been preparing for 2008/9 and the Euro 5 Emissions in EU testing,

and they introduced the Euro 5 Compliant vehicles by 2009.

They then had Euro 5.5 ready for the introduction of Euro 6 Engines.

The cheated with Euro 5, Euro 5.5 & even in Euro 6 Engines.

That is from 2012/13 which they could have introduced these advances, but they just carried on with Software Cheats

and EU Testing Loopholes taken to the max.

Remappers have had Software & Tuning Boxes that improved performance with or without more free flowing Air Intakes,

this improved performance and efficiency has improved economy on many owners cars,

VW have just taken the well known since the Introduction of Euro 5 Emissions and are using now on the same vehicles.

As they keep saying, it suits the Majority of these vehicles, so lets hear what is happening with those in the minority,

is the Majority 90% because of those vehicles being the biggest sellers over the period covered,

bit if the minority is 10% of 11 Million, which cars/engines are in the 1.1 Million?

If that laminar flow mesh is not a new invention then why put your worldwide reputation at risk by cheating?.

Surely the answer must lie in (unadmitted) less power?.

There was one of those an the MAF for the 2.0 pd tdi.

What gives?

I have just looked at my posting in the original thread and its all still there, is it just locked out of sight ?

Presumably that means it was locked  by someone on purpose, can't be locked without human intervention?. So why does Colin? not  unlock it and get it back?

The mesh is about the ugliest piece of "in the air-flow" peice I have ever seen as it looks like it is made of flat plate steel and it affect on the flow rate and higher air flow rate surely must be pronounced.

Anyone would want to see the pre and post torque curves as I would be amazed if it does not push up the point at which max torque and power are produced.  If it does allow the MAF to react more in time with ECU and injectors to actually keep the NO closer to the original stated and legal standards then great but it has the hallmarks of a cheap fix which does more for doing less harm on VW profits than doing a best possible fix such as a better computer with more interpolated mapping points and better MAF and injectors where it sounds more logical the answer lies.

See my attached picture to see a close up on the mesh.  Not exactly an aero part.

If we compare meshes of 1.9L CR, 2.0L PD and 2.0L CR with this mesh of 1.6L CR, something is very different. Position of MAF sensor of 1.9 and 2.0 is very close to mesh, but with this hi-tech solution for 1.6L CR, MAF sensor is about 4-5cm away from mesh.

Also, air pipe bending is also very close to output of 1.6L MAF sensor... and that bending can create more unequal airflow through MAF, whether mesh before MAF exists or not.

This means that mesh solution is just one more fraud.

yeap, FRAUD! again!

Let VW arrange the collection of your vehicle and the dropping off of a courtesy car or pay you the hourly rate the same as you lose out on from delivering and waiting for collection.

Fuel Expenses, possibly Ferry and overnight accommodation for those travelling any distance to have VW sort out the mess of their making.

Just if that is what owners / drivers choose obviously because it is not for VW to dictate how people need to help

them out to reduce their costs.

A wealthy corporation that can pay big golden handshakes even to those that are behind the Cheats and frauds.

They have the 'Assist' Network if the 'Fix' is so simple, and the Team they employ can travel the country to peoples home , workplace or suitable locations saving the Customer inconvenience.

If they need to purchase more Fully Equipped Vehicles and Employ Trained Technicians then that is what they need.

Well it is said that leopards do not change their spots. Does anyone think that this miraculous 'fix' will be rigorously tested by anyone or is it just some old chat up line that VAG have come up with to butter up the German Authorities? It may be that the rest of Europe is expected to receive these tablets of stone from Mount Wolfsburg as he new Gospel! All hail The Mesh!

Why create a flat plate grill rather than round where the drag coefficient is twice as high unless it is suppose to work as a restrictor plate?

Edited by lol-lol

Can not say why, I was just examining texture on that VW miracle tube with grill, looks exactly like 3D printed structures

According to the higher powers they tried to merge the thread with another one but because it was so big the system screwed up and it disappeared out of sight, nobody can see it but it does exist. Not even Colin can get it back. So if we could stay on topic from now on that would be great.Thanks.

Not sure if Colin had any joy.

It's there but not if you click on the link to it.

If I may say so there have been loads of comments  which in my opinion are trivia but which have not  brought about  any adverse comment  and to keep on topic.  The comment   re the disappearance/ non resurrection of the 105 page topic, which  due to it's size it seems a strange  move to try and merge it with another, thus making it even bigger?. Thank you.

Whether it works or not will become manifest once fitted, but I must say IF the solution is so simple and does not inhibit the performance in ANY way, then as others have commented, one wonders why V A G  strayed from the paths of righteousness in the first place. I am sure I am like others and remain extremely sceptical, plus of course, we are entitled to have some form of guarantee not only of the efficacy  of the  " device " but  also as to the duration . Something  to my mind doesn't  ring true.  Hopefully the lawyers acting on our behalves will go into it deeply, shame they  haven't got  the long 105 page thread to peruse and see the various comments and links, or maybe  lawyers have been and are keeping an eye on Briskoda's forums, as Skoda UK are doing.

On a standard turbo engine maximum power and torque are determined by turbo boost pressure and fueling. Intake air is compressed by the turbo, we are not looking at a normally aspirated engine here were air paths are critical for engine breathing.

As maximum boost pressure is monitored and regulated by the ECU a slight restriction in the intake will not effect maximum boost pressure. (As long as that isn't changed in the software mod)

If you do introduce a slight  restriction on the intake to the turbo this can cause slower turbo spool up, increased lag and poorer throttle response. Whether the intake grid is enough a restriction for the driver to notice a difference is not known yet. But if the fueling and boost pressure at full throttle remains the same then maximum power and torque will not be affected.

Lee

But if the fueling and boost pressure at full throttle remains the same then maximum power and torque will not be affected.

...then the emission problem will not be fixed...

So, restriction in the intake gives better calculation for fuel... We have to add ECU software changes (EGR, boost, revs) and emission will be fixed... but with worst mpg and performance...
