1.5 SEL first gear issue.

Featured Replies

My Karoq has two 'characteristics' - the annoying characteristic of kangarooing in first gear, and the DANGEROUS characteristic of 'dying' in first gear when leaving junctions. I use the word 'dying' because the word 'stalling' carries an implication of some error on the part of the driver. I suspect that these 'characteristics'  are related.

So, we now know that Skoda UK and Skoda dealers are aware of all this AND STILL THEY CONTINUE TO SELL THESE CARS!!! Are they really informing potential new owners about this issue???

In every other respect, the car is excellent, and I would have some reluctance in rejecting it. We are told that there may be a fix in the second quarter of the year, but by that time we will be out of the first 6 months of ownership and rejection will be more difficult.

I have spoken to 'Paul' before and he is scheduled to ring me back on 7th January; I will be recording the conversation. I suggest that we all record such conversations and supply them to Watchdog.

Hi. That's really interesting that you mention 'dying' in first gear as that has now happened 3 times with me. All on a slightly uphill junction while pulling out. Very dangerous indeed

Yes - that's it. The first time it happened to me, I was pulling out of an uphill minor road onto a fast main road. The first few times that it happens, you blame yourself believing that you've yet to get used to the clutch travel or you ask yourself " ..... have I slipped it into 3rd by mistake"? Since that first time, however, I have learned that the car doesn't necessarily have to be on a slope in order for the engine to die.

I have been sold a car that is dangerous - and I understand that is grounds for rejection. I must make contact with 'Trading Standards' and check my rights.

Looks like a COMPUTER came up with that little gem of a response.:x

As a Radio 4 listener, I have contacted You & Yours about this issue. As with all consumer bodies, it's all about numbers, so please contact them here https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qps9/contact

Mine has also 'died' in first gear, and I've got a DSG!

Yes, it was me (nick Kangarooq) on Skoda forum (Czech one). I have just tried to wake them up a bit there. Well, awareness about customer  rights is  not so strong there like in the UK but I am sure there is  already enough  annoyed drivers in Czech and Slovak reps to move things ahead.  We should start serious campaign to show VW group that they cannot fiddle with their customers. Yes, especially 2nd gear stall problem is a safety issue and they have to fix it immediately!  I am not going to put lives of my kids at risk! Let them hear what is our concern!  Write, call, complain! Amen

Thank you for that post, FwineF, the link leads to a very straightforward form which I have just completed and returned to 'You & Yours'. I added that I would be more than happy to be interviewed - preferably in the presence of a representative of Skoda UK.

I suggest that everyone with 1.5L problems writes in; once the issue is publicised, then I suspect that there will be an avalanche of complaints as more buyers of new cars realise that the problems are caused by the car and not the driver.

Irony isn't dead after all.

I have also done the same.

I've contacted Watchdog but they won't respond unless lots of people contact them.

I have also mailed them.

I've posted few comments on their Facebook page.... I've just checked wether that post is still there. Guess what? Škoda UK must have took the post off their page. I won't give up. I'm on their Twitter and Facebook page. They play dirty tricks with people.

I've just filled their form as well... although I chosen to stay anonymous.

I’ve put a comment on the FB Karoq advert page, we’ll see how long it lasts....

Unfortunately, Skoda UK (and most other large organisations), simply repost the same content periodically, meaning that the comments start again, and the one with all the negative comments disappears.

You can keep posting the same content each time they post, but I suspect they'll eventually block you.

Referring back to FwineF's post on page 32 and the transcript of his conversation with Skoda UK ......... Skoda UK is saying that they are well aware of the issue and have informed their dealers who should pass on the information to customers. When I bought my Karoq at the end of September, the dealer said nothing to me and didn't appear to know anything about it until their technician tested the vehicle in early December and found the 'kangarooing' for himself. Somebody is lying.

[incidentally, my biggest concern is the engine dying, not the kangarooing]

If Skoda UK is being open and honest about the issue, then why do they keep taking down any Facebook posts that comment upon it? Why don't they answer those posts honestly?

I smell a major, major problem brewing for the VW Group; instead of being honest, they are trying to cover it up ......... and it stinks. Whilst they are playing it all down, I bet they are running around like loons ............. with opinion now set against diesels, this 1.5 petrol engine was destined to become their saviour.

Keep posting on their Facebook posts, it's the best way to irritate them...

Given the fact that Skoda UK can't even tell the difference between their own cars should tell you all you need to know about their ability to serve their customers...

Potential customers are NOT being told of problems prior to purchase - misleading omissions in information that affect buying decision = clear breach of Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 Part 2. Which? Legal Services vvvv helpful

Well, not only has post gone but the advert on FB has too......perhaps the fact that Skoda had what looked like a Kodiaq with a Karoq plate on it at the head of the advert might have been the reason. I could be wrong, they look so similar.

*Does anyone else think that red motor (it can been seen in Silver1011's post above) is a Bear not a Karoq?

Would it be possible to add a FB link for this post as I can't find it on FB

It isn't as simple as that I'm afraid. Facebook, their corporate giant supporters and targeted advertising mean it is very difficult to share content outside of your friends list.

There us no URL associated with this particular post, indeed even if you head to Skoda UK's Facebook page and scroll through their recent content, it isn't there.

You need to 'like' Skoda UK and await their targeted advertising to appear in your timeline.

I think it's been pulled off FB.....I had a good look around this a.m. as I posted a critical comment last evening and wanted to see if there had been any response.

silver1011; I don't think you have to 'like' to get pestered, simply showing an interest on the Skoda page was all it took for FB ads to start appearing on my timeline.
