Just silent coat. There is not enough room between the seat-belt mechanism and trim for comfort. I was concerned about binding, although not hard to fix. But because this is my wife's car.... you don't want to cause problems! Just fix them :)

 

I do recommend finding some high density foam for the sills and B pillar cavity. Head down to your local rubber-shop and grab some 5 cm thick seat padding. Something you can scrunch up and stuff

This both damps/braces the metal around it and also absorbs internal sound bouncing around. Tap the sills mid-door and you will know what I mean.

 

Also rap the B pillar trim with a knuckle before you start, you will also see how cavernous it is in there. 

 

How effective was it? My wife who was not paying close attention, noted that she could now hear wind noise and noise through the window, that was not as noticeable before the fix :)

So have just finished soundproofing both B pillars.

 

Not a hard job but made a couple of small mistakes that I had to rectify.

 

First off remove the airbag plastic cover, I used a knife, as described earlier prize from the middle. One of the tabs broke off as I removed it but it still went back on ok.

 

Then removed the T20 screw being very careful not to drop it into the b pillar. Magnetic tool is a must.then pulled the trim of firmly from the to lower tabs and slid the top b pillar trim down. The bottom trim pulled off easily as well.

 

Then went to work with the silent coat on both the b-pillar and the inside of the trim, also added some closed cell insulation to the b pillar trim. Careful not to make it too thick as it may interfere with the running of the seat belt. Each side of the seat belt mechanism there are voids into the sill. I stuffed these full of closed-cell to act as a buffer for any noise travelling up the B pillar. 

 

Once fully insulated I fitted the lower trim, and now made my mistake fitting the upper trim. I fitted everything back replaced the T20 screw, only to realise I had not lined up the adjustable seat belt height mechanism, so the seat belt will not retract. Removed the trim again, lined up the mechanism and refitted and everything was ok. Very easy to make this mistake so be careful. Also be careful with that T20, it would be very easy to drop it into the b-pillar and you may never see it again.

 

Each side took around 40 minutes, I would class this as an easy job. Now for a drive to see does it make any difference.

These are the two areas I packed with closed cell to block any noise traveling along the hollow sills.

Nice summary. Very similar to my experience, including broken clip, I did forget to say I attached the top trim and realised the seat-belt buckle was inside the pillar :)

 

I did price up genuine replacements seem to be about 10 USD. Knockoffs from Ali Express 4 USD.

Nerve-racking moment eh! I was shaking :)

 

If I was game enough I would try a long hose and some spray foam in the sills. But knowing my luck it would squirt out somewhere into the carpet :)

Thought about that too but might run he risk of moisture build up/rust if no ventilation, and if body work was ever needed could be a problem.


Check these noise insulation solutions... Much more foam and stuff

BTW I am looking for 235/45R18 super quiet tyres. The Continental SportContact 5, are a big part of the problem here. Time to spend some bigger bucks solving this issue.

I have for winter BF Goodrich g-Force Winter 2 235/45/r18 supposedly 69db - they do feel very quiet until you start accelerating
for summer I bought Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 3 which should have 69db too, but for some reason I think they're pretty loud. It is possible that the tyre shop put on 94W which are 71db. I have to check actually I just didn't consider that until now... Like u can hear them all the time while winter were pretty quiet until some speed. In general I some how feel my car is really loud with noise insulation almost every where except car floor. I felt Golf GTI 2006 is quieter... 

 

I'm generally unhappy with noise in my car, specially because I can hear wind noise on right rear doors somewhere around window at top but I checked every damn thing and it seems to seal well and no rubber is damaged or anything like that. I also checked alignment of doors (because I had really bad issues from factory because of that, like driver's doors didn't even seal.... it was like having open window all the time)... I dunno. I'm actually lately thinking to waste money and buy A6 instead (used ofc). 

I also have noise coming from rear left headlight, yeah.... Weird... It seems like the mounting plastic was broken and the light is moving bit up down on holes. It may even been hit from some object (there is small damage on the light outside) but insurance company won't cover that... And I'm not paying 200€+ for that crap... I also have very loud suspension, some is bushings which were replaced twice now and some is idk what, I can actually hear every hole inside the cabin, like the suspension is not doing its job correctly. In friends A4 u can't hear any potholes or anything like that inside his car. No idea really truly noise wise this car is pain in my ass... Ow didn't mention I also have noisy glovebox (fixed by adding additional rubber to make it more "stable" and some  thing behind glovebox or inside dashboard, not sure... Noises after noises. I fix one 2 appear... So tired... Middle console where you rest your hands, also plastic is still not quiet after adding various materials and even spraying silicone spray....

Big thumbs up for these, replaced Turanzas with these on my Passat and made a HUGE difference. 68db.

One key area regarding this post must be regarding the noise of the tyres.

 

If your OEM tyres are ContiSeal, then they are 71dB and if not ContiSeal they are 72dB.

Have a look at Goodyear / Dunlop tyres as they are around 68dB - 69dB.

I have just purchased new tyres for mine (yet to put on though) and they are 245/40R19 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 98Y XL (69dB) - my original Pirelli P7 are 72dB.

So a 3dB saving right there for me!!!

Um one question, the 245 did you have to do any special things to put them on? Like change wheels? I wonder cause 245/45R18 are 80-120€ (total with 4 tyres) cheaper than 235/45R18 and I wanted to buy them but the size isn't "official" anywhere so

A little update, I can't edit previous post so I have to post again. So I basically filled whole B pillars with foam meant for seats and stuff like that (took @digifish's advice) where ever I could squash it in. And the result is fantastic. Road noise seems to have reduced a lot!!! Maybe its short term thing and only in my head so I will give it a few more days to sattle in 😛 but first impressions are huge difference... These pillars look really bad idea from Skoda. Like truly it vibrates like hell and its soo thin... On Audi's u if you knock on the pillars u don't hear any "noise" it feels like its filled with something. Interesting truly.

I still haven't found out why I can hear the air coming in on right back doors.... I tried setting doors again and its no use, maybe I have to adjust them at the door hinges, truly no idea. But its just 1 door... I've had issues with air inside cabin since I bought the car, but I was able to properly set most doors except the damn rear right... Its soo annoying specially now after all noise insulation. That's source of most noise now! Maybe going to try dealer, but in past they were really useless regarding doors (my left back doors have like 1cm clearance and right ones 0.4mm... Truly visible... And they say its normal...

You can see here from this factory image (octavia but same basic design, a backing panel is sandwiched over this) the sills and B pillar make a hollow upsidedown T. The sills are like tubes sucking up all the road noise from the tyres and feeding it into the B pillar.

I'm guessing road noise and general noise in the car also matters based on price u pay, so I'm sure VW has some instructions for Skoda how to build certain things. I'm sure price of build process is not that big of an issue... With some things in this car I truly got that feeling... Skoda is still cheap and affordable car compared to VW/Audi so I think that's the biggest reason we don't get as good insulation and obviously older and worse tech (not all of course). I know for a fact that SLA on my car doesn't work as nearly as good as matrix headlights and I blame camera a lot there. Any way, I also noticed that friend's A4 noise from outside the car (engine noise) is also lower and deeper than Superbs so I'm sure there is something to it too :D

Hello again,

 

after many months of sporadic work I now have a silent car.

I put in numerous coats of STP on:

- the engine bonet

- the trunk floor

- the wheel arches from the outside

- the B pillars

- the doors

Additionaly I added braces under the car (https://www.hardrace-europe.com/fitments-3/skoda-1/superb/3rd-b8-3v-2016-present.html) and a front strut bar.

I now like my car. It is really quiet, it has no vibration regardless of the road surface, the turn in is so direct and the whole car feels like one single unit. It really feels like an Audi.

The effect is astonishing at High speed. Only noise comes from the mirrors - double-glazed Windows would surely make the car excepțional but I can’t find them anywhere. It is however a rather benign sound.

All the added balast has made the car feel like a little “elephant” but it does not bother my relaxed driving style and is rather appropiate for highway motoring (it’s the familly car you know).

What’s next?  Well the car is now a rattle and creack concerto.

Anybody silenced the center console, between the front seats? It drives me crazy!!!

Forgot to mention that I replaced the Pirelli P7 garbage tires with 68dB Dunlop’s.
