30k advised new discs and pads needed all round

Hmmmm, I'd expect to replace discs every other set of pads so, yeah 3035k miles seems about right.

Kinda depends how you drive I guess

How in the name of sweet baby Jesus do you get through a set of pads in 15kmiles?

Do you commute via a racetrack ?

I'm a postman & travel on very quiet/empty roads with some quick straights but, big braking zones for roundabouts.

I also drive for smiles & NOT mpg

@DavidY, the difference with the DSG,  is that haven driven only 2 pedal cars over 4 decades now and not using brakes that much,  in the last decade driving DSG,s I hardly ever touch the foot brake from setting off until coming to a halt.  That is because of doing manual down shifts,  and just reading the road. Obviously drivers of manuals will do the same,  or some do.   The pads and brake discs get no wear,  other than cleaning the rust off the discs  at the start or any drive,  or discs scoring..  The thing is that of all the OEM discs I see on new and nearly new,  and we'll used cars,  VW group manage to source the worst there are out there.

Strangely on my last two VAG vehicles Pasat and Octavia the rears have gone first.

This is clearly the dealer seeing the opportunity for a quick buck. I do a lot of work "in the trade" and know how this works and how main dealers operate. Tell them you will have the discs and pads replaced at the next service. For what its worth, my local independent Skoda tech charges £60 labour per corner plus parts.

i have discs and pads slightly worn in great condition just removed to fit dimpled grooved. message me if you want some pics less than 10K on them.

you should be able to get discs and pads fitted at £40 a wheel and get the hardware for less than £300

My sets of discs rust well before 30,000miles....I do less than 10,000miles a year..& rust eats them...along with salt in winter...

I fitted new discs & pads a couple of years ago..& those are fubar as the rear face pads on each front calliper decided to stick on..causing more wear & pad dust build up & deposits on the rear face which is now fubar...front face is perfect..rear face is a wreck..

PS don't buy Mintex ceratec brake grease as it don't work!!…& double check & grease that groove/slot for the pads as I have the 312mm discs that you have...

& there is nobody near who does "pro lath" cutting of the disc insitu...so new discs & pads again...arrggghh!!…..

No works van, no mofo uses their own car nowdays.

I just have a few big stop/slow downs (wash off 100mph) for roundabouts as there is virtually no traffic when I commute

As in, he drives his vRS to his workplace very early before anyone else is up and therefore gets to drive fast safely....

I have this image of people lying in bed listening to his high speed approach and the doppler effect change in tone as he passes. Then going back to sleep.

Wait for the next MOT they will soon let you know, even then they could go on for another year if it’s only a observation and with the new MOT std being tighter.a friend had a VRS  and got 80,000 out of the rears before p/x it.

Thought it had been a while since one of these threads. They usually crop-up once a week or so.

A prime example of a franchised main dealer looking to up sell, after all who's going to question, quibble or skimp on brakes? Dealers play on the fear-factor.

Get a second opinion, and when every man and his dog tell's you they are fine put in an official complaint to the dealer and Skoda UK.

Unfortunately for every one person that sees through their shoddy practices and says 'thanks but no thanks' there are two more that say 'go ahead and do it'.

It's bordering on theft, and dodgy dealers such as yours need pulling up on it. Name and shame please.

Several years ago DM Keith in York tried it on me. Three years, three MOT's and three services later the discs and pads were still going strong.

Makes me sick this still happens.

I couldn’t agree more. I used to see / hear main dealers ripping people off every time I

went in. Theft is spot on. ‘Kin scumbags.

I now use a reputable Indy and will never darken the door of a main Skoda dealer again.

(10 years ago most Skoda dealers were small, decent and trustworthy businesses. Success has gone to their heads and they now think they are VW or even Audi. Shame on them!)

Bear in mind that the Skoda workshop manual gives a minimum brake pad thickness, including the metal backplate, of 10mm for front pads and 9mm for rears. That equates to 2mm of pad material as the minimum thickness.

Discs vary depending on model, but my front disc is 25mm when new, and the wear limit is 22mm. Many serviceable discs are scrapped just because they have a lip and look a bit tired.

It’s an easy money maker for the dealers, but equally you pay them to maintain your car, and many customers would be quick to complain if the pads went down to metal, or the warning light came on in between services so I understand dealers covering their backsides in that respect.

My 2015 Octavia is on 98k miles and still has the original front and rear discs, the mechanic has advised that I would

probably get another set of pads out of the fronts. Probably going to get them changed shortly though as it saves hassle down the line.

Just got my the Black edition back from it's 4yr/45k service, front discs and pads had to be replaced - apparently it should have been done a while ago, as the lack of pad had scored the discs. which certainly explains the vibration on braking that my wife had mentioned...

He said the rears have about 10k left on them.

Oh dear scored ehhh,

Discs under min thickness,cracked,or warped=replace.

Scored,rusty,unsightly=cash cow for dealers .

If the discs were warped from excess heat i.e pads down to metal well that explains the vibration.........you know the moral of the story don't you....

It wasn't just scoring, that was just the "funny" part. They were advisories on the last MOT, but that was a rubbish month, so I saved my pennies... and then forgot.

My mechanic is a friend, so I'd like to think he wasn't ripping me off.

Years ago a Vauxhall dealer rang me to say my rear pads were on the limit and needed replaced at something like £250. The same car with the same pads went through 2 MOT's after that, with one of those at the same dealership that wanted me to replace them.

Some of you might have used Camskill for tyres off the web? Back in the good days they had a workshop and fitted tyres aswell as selling them. Same Vauxhall had warped it's tyres, they weren't very worn but they were making a racket. An independent identified the problem and I booked it into Camskill 2 new rears. The guy came to see me within ten minutes and asked why I was changing them. I explained the warping and he said they liked to check because so many people turn up with perfectly fine tyres that their dealer has told them need changed. It's honest people like that we need. Sadly they don't do a fitting service anymore, they were awesome

Up to 45k miles on my 2014 VRS TDi. Rears are noisy and look scored. Dealer highlighted at the last service but weren't over pushy. Going to do them myself in a week or so.

Eurocarparts are on 50% off on brakes this weekend with 'payday50' code (so that's normal price then, not the made up price before the code). Can get Brembo discs and pads for the rear for £111.

Worth a punt on the Brembo parts or should I go to TPS and get original? That is my quandary now.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've owned my first Skoda, a petrol VRs since July, it's done 38k miles & I part ex'd my Civic for it at a Honda dealer.

The car's in great condition but I've recently had to take it in to the local Skoda dealer for a 'patch' update (whatever that is?!) on the headlights, as the Honda dealer obviously couldn't do it.

The Skoda dealer carried out a free health check while it was in & were delighted to inform me the same thing - front discs excessively lipped & rear discs excessively rusted, replacement of these & pads quoted at an alarming £679 + VAT, yikes!!

I think I need a second opinion on this too!

I will do the work myself but can anyone advise the best place to buy parts from?

You DEFINITELY need a second opinion, it's not unknown for dealers to comment that pads and discs need replacing but for owners to drive many thousands of miles afterwards and at the next MOT get no mention of the pads & discs needing changing. Go figure that out???

  • 9 months later...

55k and discs and pads needed all round, more due to corrosion and warping than wear. I use an old-school reputable back street place, he's quoted £275inc. for the lot fitted, including replacing a cracked suspension bush. I've gone through 2 MOTs with an advisory, don't think I can push it much further (spot the tight Yorkshireman)!
