Alarm Siren Battery Replacement

Featured Replies

Hi All

I scanned the VRS with VCDS recently and there was a "low voltage" error to do with the alarm siren picked up.

I decided to replace the battery (2010 vehicle) and hoped that the battery hadn't started leaking over the circuit board.

I had read that you open the case up with either a Stanley blade or a hack saw. A mate suggested heating before cutting so I used the wife's hairdryer before cutting with a Stanley blade. It was pretty easy when heated up a bit.

Unfortunately that's as good as it got as I had a couple of issues. First one was I cut a wire with the blade while opening it up as there are 2 very close to the edge of the case. Second was I got the wrong battery.

I will get the correct battery and replace as planned.

I replaced the wire. Please note that if you de-solder the original wire, the metal coating comes with it so you need to solder in another place. I moved the wires to sit in a bit.

I took some photos that may help others if they decide to replace the battery. It looks very easy to do. I also have a photo showing the position of the alarm at the rear of the front drivers wheel arch.

Cheers

Dave

First, have you had the car battery tested?

  • Thanks for replies. The main car battery has not been tested. Car is 9 yrs old. Owned car 3 yrs. Don’t know if battery is original but seems likely. Car starts fine and stop start works. I have now cu

It looks a whole lot better than mine did, if a battery does not fix that then I am not going to bother buying a second hand one.

From my searches you can find a 150mah cell pack easily but not the 200mah.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

PS I opened mine up with a hacksaw, it was easy to control and was guided in the cut by the moulding, I will use sikaflex to re-assemble the new one when battery replaced.

I read somewhere ages ago that someone used button cells wrapped in heat shrink tubing to make a replacement battery.

The original is just 5 X Varta V200H batteries which you can still get. It's just soldering or spot welding the pin at each end that would be difficult.

Soldering wires on the cells is easy provided you roughen the surface with an abrasive, clean and flux the surface and use a high heat iron for a quick application of solder, you don't want to wait around with a puny iron waiting for it to heat the button cell.

If you don't have a solder gun or similar you can improvise, I've had to use a wooden handled screwdriver over an electric cooker before.

Needs must!

How would you make the intermediate contacts between the cells?

Just a thought but what about conductive glue??

I think the manufactured battery of cells (to use the correct terminilogy) of this type rely on the heat shring tubing to hold the stack in contact with each other.

If so then I have answered my own question

Probably a lot cheaper buying individual cells.

The battery is 2 pin, one at each end. I can't find the correct one on the web.

Anyone have a link to the correct battery?

But well done to you for finding the exact replacement which I thought was impossible, all my searching got me nowhere!

Was thinking of you tonight on a 100k night drive on motorways and A roads, playing with the headlight height control and am gradually coming round to your way of thinking re the HID bulbs, the smallest adjustment makes such a difference to what I can see and others being blinded that I now think like you that OE with the proper self levelling sensors and actuators is the only way to go.

I'm someone that has to try things for himself and its been an interesting trial.

What does it involve getting to the siren unit? Will i need to remove the wheel etc?

See the location on photo above. Prob easier with wheel off. Need to pull the wheelarch liner back to get in to it. Drill out the pop rivet or undo the bolts and bend metal box back.

Did a VCDS scan and it showed 01134 Alarm horn (H12) logged as a fault, removed siren and took it apart, battery reads 6.9v so that looks good PCB has no corrosion, the battery is a Varta 6v 200ma 5/V200H  Ni-Mh and my siren is 1K8 951 605. Cheers Stuart

I still haven't replaced the battery as I couldn't find a replacement. I have one now (5 x in shrinkwrap) but it needs pins or wires soldered on at each end.

The alarm went off a couple of times yesterday with indicators but no siren so think I will need to get the battery changed soon.

I had another look for one of the Chinese copy alarm sirens but it seems they are no longer available either. 1K8 951605 or 1K0 951605.

Anyone got any links for a replacement siren if changing the battery doesn't work??

I bought one of those but it didnt work, immediately threw up an error code saying there was no communication with it followed soon after with the same fault code for the interior sensor, maybe it has pulled down the communication line?

Is there any way of testing the alarm off the vehicle? There are 4 cables but if 2 are comms then  guess its switched internally.

I just live without it but its frustrating to have the fault codes.

Idea! Would it fit my new car a 2015 Yeti?

Wish I hadn't bothered buying it now, I could have just removed and dumped the old one.

uk drivers side (right hand side).

Still not done mine yet. Got the battery but need to solder pins or wires onto it before fitting it.

Thanks :), I need to as the siren keeps going off and now car battery dead. I have vcds with the error code. But I am going to replace entire unit. Knowing my skills I will end up just breaking the old one.

I want to check old part number as people have said the letter at end can cause problems and not work if not identical.

Thanks for such a quick reply.

Heat the siren along the seam with a hair dryer and it opens easily with a Stanley knife. Just watch for the 2 wires next to the inside of the seam.

Thanks, I found an exact replacement on ebay. So old one out and car working. Will fit the new one on weekend.

i hacked it open, battery had not leaked which was interesting.

see What vcds sats with new one.

Do you have a link to the battery that you bought?

I bought a complete new alarm unit. Trying to do just battery way beyond me 😂🙈

Sorry, I misunderstood your post. Hope the new unit fits and works when you install it.
